WA 89-92 (12/2013): Starting off, the 2011 Gigondas is a Grenache dominated blend that’s aged in a combination of concrete tank and French oak. Offering up loads of spice-box, dried cedar plank, tobacco leaf and sweet red fruits, this medium-bodied, rich and nicely textured 2011 has low acidity and sweet tannin. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.
JLL *** (12/2012): Medium, steady red robe. Has a spiced, cloves air - sweet spices, with a fat air of plum behind. The nose isn’t fully ensemble, and has light floral possibilities. Some promise here, thus. The palate doesn’t leave a strong impression for now. It holds clean-cut, arm’s length red fruit, with spicing on the second half, and adhesive tannins which start clearly, then become gummy. A middle of the road traveller here. From mid-2014.
VM 89-90 (1/2014): Bright red. Ripe cherry and raspberry scents are lifted by notes of allspice and white pepper. Shows darker fruit character on the palate, with juicy black raspberry joined by cherry-cola. Closes spicy and firm, with slow-building tannins and a touch of spicecake. |

JLL **** (12/2012): Dark red. Smoky air with a touch of green oak on the front bouquet, the oak very prominent. It has a good, rather muscular couch of cooked plum fruit under the oak. The palate resembles the nose: it shows spiced, oaked red plum, damson fruit, then tightens on its oak towards the finish. In a very primary state; it has enough content to pull through, but will take 4 to 5 years. There is Grenache sweetness on the finale, mixed in with its oak that gives it a gummy chocolate touch. It has a three-quarter weight vintage style, the palate marked by an aromatic sweetness. It offers plenty. From 2017.
JD 91-93 (10/2012): A step up in terms of intensity of aromatics and depth on the palate, the 2011 Domaine les Goubert Gigondas Cuvée Florence is a blend of Grenache and Syrah that also is raised mostly in concrete tanks. It offers up a beautiful array of new leather, garrigue, spice, and pepper aromas that are supported by quality currant and assorted darker styled fruits. Aromatic and complex on the nose, this hits the palate with a medium-bodied, soft, round texture, good acidity, and plenty of tannin that emerges on the finish. Upfront and approachable, especially for this cuvee, it should nevertheless evolve gracefully for 10-12 years or more. |

JD 94 (1/2022): The 2019 Gigondas Cuvée Florence is more concentrated and layered, and this is one of the finest vintages of this cuvée I can remember. Blackberries, sandalwood, cedary garrigue, and hints of tobacco give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 that offers silky tannins and a great finish. Give bottles a handful of years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades.
VM 94 (1/2023): Deep ruby. Heady dark berry, cherry-cola, vanilla and floral aromas are complicated by hints of white pepper, incense and espresso. Powerful, smoke-laced blackberry compote, kirsch, mocha and fruitcake flavors show impressive depth and gain sweetness with air. This finishes sweet, broad, youthfully tannic and long, leaving behind intense dark fruit and peppery spice notes. This was aged for two years in barriques, 50% of them new. Josh Raynolds. |
