JD 96 (11/2020): First released in 1983, the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Chavaroche comes from the Côte Brune side of the appellation, in the Chavaroche lieu-dit. This is a tiny 1.2-hectare parcel of 40-year-old vines. Where the Les Journaries is perfumed and already complex, this is certainly more backward and reticent, with powerful smoked red and black fruits, peppery herbs, sandalwood, and cured meats. Structured and tannic on the palate, yet also concentrated, it has everything you could want from a great Côte Rôtie, but it's going to need 7-8 years of bottle age to show it. It's a gorgeous, old school beauty I'd be happy to have in the cellar. VM 96 (7/2019): Opaque ruby. Displays slow-to-open black/blue fruit, licorice, floral oil and smoked meat aromas, along with building cracked pepper and licorice qualities. Stains the palate with deeply concentrated cassis, bitter cherry, violet pastille and smoky bacon flavors that turn spicier on the back half. Solid, gripping tannins support a very long, penetrating finish that emphatically echoes the floral, blue fruit notes. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 96 (12/2022): Inky violet color. Displays intensely perfumed, mineral-driven dark berry preserve, incense, exotic spice and pipe tobacco scents that show fine detail and a hint of smokiness. Stains the palate with alluringly sweet kirsch, blackberry and cassis flavors that are complemented by suggestions of olive paste, candied violet and cracked pepper. The spicy nuance comes back strong on the penetrating finish, which is framed by powerful, steadily building tannins. Be patient with this one. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 92 (2/2015): Vivid purple. Deeply pitched aromas of black and blue fruits, olive paste, tobacco and black pepper, with a hint of candied flowers in the background. Juicy, focused and energetic, offering vibrant blackberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors that gain sweetness and spiciness with air. The smoky note comes back on the long, spice-accented finish, which is framed by fine-grained, gently gripping tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 93 (4/2018): Bright purple. Intensely perfumed aromas of dark berry liqueur, cherry compote, olive, licorice candy and smoky bacon show excellent focus and mineral lift. Stains the palate with intense, appealingly sweet blueberry and fruitcake flavors that become deeper and spicier with air. Distinctly rich, in the style of the years, but this wine comes off surprisingly graceful and precise and finishes with wonderful persistence and chewy, slowly emerging tannins. Josh Raynolds. |
