JD 98+ (12/2023): The flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is based on 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Dense purple-hued, with incredible aromatics of black and blue fruits, camphor, liquid violets, tobacco, and graphite, it has a remarkable sense of opulence in its aromas and flavors and delivers full-bodied richness, a massive mid-palate, building tannins, and a thrilling finish. It reminds me of an improved 2013. This heavenly Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will evolve for 30-40 years in cold cellars and is another absolutely sensational wine from this estate. Don't miss it. Drink between 2023-2063.
WA 98+ (3/2024): A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, all aged in new French oak, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill appears destined to be another classic. Penetrating aromas of cassis and red berries are joined by hints of violets, dried sage, crushed stones and pencil shavings on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and intensely concentrated, framed by dusty tannins that linger easily on the long, mouthwatering finish. Drink between 2025-2050.
VM 91 (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another huge, brooding wine in this range. Today, the tannins are searing in their intensity. It's hard to know if the fruit will ever emerge here. The 2021 is massiely tannic and forbidding at this stage. Drink between 2024-2033. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 99 (3/2024): Colgin's 2021 IX Estate is a rich, opulent example, with layers of ripe black cherries and dark chocolate punctuated by hints of sage and bay leaf, plus some vaguely floral notes (violets?). Full-bodied, concentrated, velvety and long, it's another terrific wine that showcases the potential of Pritchard Hill, the investment by the owners and the talent of the winemaking team. Drink between 2025-2045.
JD 98+ (12/2023): I’d wager a Napa Valley legend in the making, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon IX Estate comes from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill, and if there was ever a classification of terroirs in the valley, this would check in near the top of the list. Deep purple-hued, with awesome aromatics of pure cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and subtle floral hints, this has that rare mix of power and elegance that defines so many great wines. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, it has no shortage of structure and is going to need 7-8 years, if not a decade, to hit full maturity, where it will hold for 2-3 decades. Drink between 2023-2031.
VM 98 (12/2023): The 2021 IX Estate is such an elegant wine. Sleek, aromatic and refined, the 2021 is one of the most polished young wines I have tasted from this site. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mint abound. Silky and delineated, the 2021 is exceptionally beautiful and balanced. Clean saline notes and veins of tannin extend the explosive, sublime finish. Drink between 2027-2041. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 98+ (11/2013): Still a young wine at age 12, the 2001 Insignia exhibits a dense purple color along with a sweet bouquet of camphor, blackberries, cassis, incense and spring flowers. Full-bodied, rich and heady with sweet tannin, stunning concentration and a fabulous finish, this remarkable Insignia has 25 or more years of life ahead of it.
VM 95+ (4/2016): (from an early harvest, like 2015; the first vintage of a ten-year spell without any Cabernet Franc): Dark red with ruby highlights. The aromas of currant, graphite minerality and dark chocolate convey an inviting warmth. Wonderfully suave, fleshy and sweet, especially for its 13.9% alcohol. Deep, broad flavors of raspberry, sandalwood and soy are energized by a subtle mineral quality and harmonious acidity. Outstanding intensity and tight grain here. Finishes with serious but integrated tannins that spread out horizontally on the very long finish. This wonderfully balanced, still-young wine has clearly benefited from the firming influence of its 8% Petit Verdot element, the highest to this point. Incidentally, this was the last vintage of the Insignia with measurable brettanomyces--but it works for me!
WS 88 (6/2011): Enticing aromas of mixed berries, mocha, cedar and tobacco. Full-bodied, focused and intense, with touches of mature flavors that turn simpler and fade on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now. 18,000 cases made. |

VM 99 (8/2024): The 2021 No. 15 Cumulus Vineyard is a total stunner. It's also a pretty radical departure from most years in that Grenache drives the blend. That comes through in the wine's captivating aromatics and gorgeous, layered fruit. Crushed rose petal, red cherry, plum, mint, mocha and dried herbs infuse the palate with notable depth. The 2021 is flat-out stunning—that’s all there is to it. The blend is 40% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 22% Petite Sirah and 4% Petit Manseng. There's a touch of stem inclusion (7%), but not much. Drink between 2027-2041. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (8/2024): Aged for 30 months in 53% new French oak, the 2021 Cumulus Vineyard No. 15 combines 40% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 22% Petite Sirah and 4% Petit Manseng. The nose combines towering red and black fruit aromas supplemented with herbal, citrus and tobacco accents that assemble around a perceptible core of ethanol. The palate is polished and seamless, with a bit more grace than found elsewhere in the lineup, but ultimately defined by similar luxurious, voluptuous textures and sweet-fruited concentration. The finish displays vibrant acidity and rich, swelling, fine-grained tannins but concludes with an alcohol-induced burn. The textures and overall vision on display here are to be admired, but the ultimate complexity, age-worthiness and balance are on their back foot due to the spirituous nature of much of the lineup. Drink between 2024-2030. |

VM 98+ (8/2024): The 2021 Touriga Nacional - Número Sete is terrific, but it is also a very young wine that will need time in bottle to blossom. Nearly completely opaque in color, the nose opens with deep, dense aromas of dried clove, tobacco leaf, graphite, black plums and chocolate-covered dark fruit aromas, with increasingly savory and woody notes appearing after time in the glass. The palate is an absolute behemoth, with a blocky, gargantuan density that reaches its logical conclusion in a staining, saturated, concentrated finish framed with chewy tannins. This is equally clear testimony to the sheer mass achievable with Touriga Nacional and the lavish decadence that can be applied to it if one desires. Drink between 2024-2030. |

WA 90 (12/1996): In my October tasting both 1993 Cabernets were more tannic and closed than the 1992s. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley offers up a whiff of herbs in its tight nose, followed by chocolatey, spicy, black-cherry, and cassis flavors, an exotic, medium to full-bodied, concentrated palate, and moderate tannin in the lusty finish. It does not possess the definition and structure of the Napa cuvee, but it is more forward and fleshy. These All-American Cabernet Sauvignons continue to be "can't miss" propositions with the majority of Cabernet lovers.
WS 86 (11/2003): A classic Silver Oak, with signature dill aromas. Shows earth, currant, lead pencil and metallic flavors, turning dry and tannic.--1993 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now. 40,000 cases made. |

| VM 91 (2/2006): Bright, full ruby-red. Aromas of dark raspberry, dark chocolate and cola. Bigger and broader than the Fay but with less obvious early sweetness. Very ripe, spicy flavors of dark chocolate, espresso and coffee offer noteworthy depth. Spreads out horizontally to coat the palate on the back end, finishing with dusty, fine, building tannins. |

VM 88 (2/2006): Saturated ruby-red. Oaky aromas of cassis, plum, cola and dark chocolate. Very ripe and chocolatey, with supple, somewhat low-toned flavors of currant, dark plum, tobacco and earth. Finishes sweet and persistent, with slightly dry-edged, earthy flavors of sassafras and sweet tobacco. Very Stags Leap in character.
WS 83 (10/2006): A bit murky, with earth- and herb-laced currant fruit that has a dry, austere edge and ends with leathery flavors. Drink now through 2009. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 968 cases made. |

JD 98+ (8/2023): Based on 88% Graciano and 12% Syrah, the inky hued 2020 Graciano saw 47% whole cluster and spent 33.5 months in 72% new Frnech oak. It has a full-bodied, tannic, structured style and gorgeous ripe black cherry and plum fruits as well as ground pepper, new leather, scorched earth and hints of iron. Deep, rich, and massively concentrated, with lots of tannins, this behemoth of a Graciano that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will knock your socks off over the following 20 years. Drink between 2027-2048.
VM 98 (9/2023): The 2020 Graciano is fabulous. Dark, dense and explosive, the Graciano is once again superb in 2020. Bacon fat, plum, black cherry, gravel, sage and menthol infuse the 2020 with tremendous character as well as nuance. What a wine. I love the energy here. Sadly, production is tiny. The blend in 88% Graciano and 12% Syrah, done with 47% stems and aged for about 34 months in barrel, 72% new. I would but every bottle I can get my hands on! Drink between 2025-2038. This beautiful monster of a wine should be pretty much indestructible, capable of cellaring for 40+ years. Drink between 2026-2061.
VM 96 (8/2024): The 2021 Nuestra Senora del Tercer Gemelo offers a capitvating mix of opulent fruit and energy, all framed by judicious French oak and silky tannins. A dense, full-bodied wine, the Nuestra Senora has so much to offer, starting with its immediacy. This full-throttle red is undeniably glorious. The blend is 57% Mourvedre, 14% Grenache, 14% Graciano, 14% Syrah, and 1% Viognier, done with 33% stems. It spent 31 months in French oak, 31% new. Drink between 2025-2036. Antonio Galloni. |
