WA 95 (12/2000): The 1998, which is a candidate for the "Wine of the Vintage," was produced from yields of 0.9 tons per acre. There are only 1,100 cases, and it is the first Harlan Estate to be composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A spectacular achievement, it boasts an opaque plum/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of espresso, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, Asian spice, and roasted meat smells. In the mouth, it is seamless, full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, gorgeously sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of concentration. This is a tour de force in winemaking. It is hard to believe that a wine such as this has emerged from 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2030. VM 93 (6/2001): Saturated dark ruby. Aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate, caramel and nutty, charred oak. Amazingly lush and silky for the year, with ripe flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and licorice. Can't match the '97, or the '99, for sheer density but this is bright, concentrated, suave and very long. Tannins are even and fine. A remarkable performance in the context of the year. WS 92 (9/2001): Remarkably supple and harmonious for the vintage, with ripe, rich, sharply focused currant, plum, blackberry and spicy dark-fruit flavors. Firms up nicely on the finish. Best from 2003 through 2012. 900 cases made. |

VM 93 (12/2018): The 2017 VioRous soars from the glass with intense, exotic floral notes. In 2017, the blend has moved up to 80%+ Viognier, which gives the wine its distinctive texture and flavor profile. This is such a classy, polished white. VioRous is a blend of Viognier from Atlas Peak and The Judge and Roussanne from The Judge. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 87 (9/2019): Pale, light yellow. Aromas of peach and nutty oak (50% new French for 12 months). A supple, fairly sweet style of Chardonnay with ripe peach and pineapple fruit flavors and some obvious oakiness. This midweight wine ultimately shows more sweet, buttery oak than real depth of fruit and the slightly phenolic finish suggests some wood tannins. Not bad but lacks distinction. Steven Tanzer. |

WA 93+ (2/2020): The "second wine" here, the 2016 Le Petit Clos is a very different blend from the 2015; it is now mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with just 4% Merlot and 1% Carménère, while last year it was almost half Carménère. The vineyards are now certified in organic and biodynamic agriculture. The bunches were hand-destemmed, and the grapes fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and a six-week maceration. Malolactic was in barrique, and the élevage happened as follows: the wine spent seven months in new French barriques, and then 71% of the volume was transferred to French oak barriques (22% new and 49% second year), while the rest of the wine was put in oak vats. The élevage was 23 months in total. With the change in varieties, this feels very different from the Clos Apalta—more Cabernet here and more Carménère there. The nose is elegant and nuanced, with herbs, spices and a core of ripe red and black fruit, quite varietal and with integrated oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with round tannins and vibrant acidity, making it long and supple. I think it's a step up over the 2015. 43,826 bottles were produced. It was bottled in September 2018. The wine is 14.7% alcohol and has a pH of 3.49. |
