VM 96 (1/2020): The 2018 Syrah Weill-a-Way, from a site at the southern end of Sonoma, is the stand-out among the Syrahs in this range. Powerful and racy, the 2018 is all class. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice, menthol and a good dose of whole cluster savoriness from the stems (50%) infuse the 2018 with striking complexity and beauty. Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon

JD 98 (12/2021): More smoked tobacco, chocolate, and cigar-like nuances emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard, a full-bodied, red and blue-fruited expression from this valley floor site, which usually seems to produce a more black-fruited wine. The quality of the tannins is remarkable, and the wine offers brilliant purity of fruit as well as plenty of mid-palate depth. This is just a stunningly complete, satisfying red that will evolve for 20 years or more. I certainly love it.

WA 95 (11/2021): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard leaps from the glass with bold plum preserves, warm cassis and Black Forest cake notions, followed by hints of menthol, tilled soil and Indian spices. Rich, full-bodied and generously fruited, the palate has a solid foundation of taut, grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long on a lingering minty note.

JD 98+ (12/2023): One of the greatest wines made in the vintage, as well as probably one of the most age-worthy, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a dense purple hue to go with quintessential Oakville notes of ripe black fruits, iron, black olive, walnuts, and darker chocolate, with an almost bloody, salty character that develops with time in the glass. It's a massive, dense, yet majestic Cabernet Sauvignon that has flawless balance, building yet perfectly ripe tannins, and the concentration and overall class to warrant 5-7 years of bottle age and evolve for 40+ years in cold cellars. Hats off to the MacDonald brothers for another incredible, magical wine. (Drink between 2030-2065)

VM 96+ (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense and potent but also quite structured. Dark fruit, plum, graphite, incense, licorice and lavender are some of the many notes that grace the 2021. Silky, plush red cherry, mocha, rose petal and spice unfurl with time in the glass. This a decidedly mid-weight wine with firm, chalky tannins. Graeme MacDonald backed off extractions a bit in 2021, which suggests a drive towards greater freshness. This is also the first vintage made at the Mending Wall facility, which is quite a bit less cramped than at Kongsgaard, where all the previous wines were made. The 2021 saw 38 days on skins and 22 months in barrel. It is an absolutely gorgeous wine, but it is also more reticent than most vintages at this stage. (Drink between 2027-2039). Antonio Galloni.

JD 99 (8/2020): This iconic site located outside of St. Helena always produces a rich, powerful wine, and the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is no exception, offering loads of black and blue fruits, gravelly earth, chocolate, and Asian spice notes as well as a full-bodied, opulent, sexy profile on the palate. With a beautiful sense of freshness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish, this gorgeous effort needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise for 30 years or more.

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon

JD 99 (12/2021): There are two releases from this remarkable site just outside St. Helena. Looking first at the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, this stunning wine gives up a monster bouquet of currants and cassis-like fruits as well as leafy herbs, tobacco, chocolate, and spice. Beautifully full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, polished tannins, impeccable balance, no hard edges, and that rare mix of power and elegance.

WA 98 (11/2021): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr Crane Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it erupts from the glass with a firework display of iron ore, lilacs, star anise and sandalwood scents, over a core of blackcurrant jelly, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, plus a touch of tree bark. Full-bodied, firm and beautifully, seamlessly knit, it delivers layer upon layer of earth and black fruits, finishing very long and fragrant.

VM 94 (1/2022): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a racy, sumptuous wine loaded with all of the charm that makes wines from this St. Helena vineyard so appealing. Crushed rocks, mint, red-toned fruit and blood orange infuse the 2019 with striking depth and tons of allure. Silky, perfumed and inviting, the Dr. Crane is another knock out in this range from Myriad. Antonio Galloni.

JD 100 (8/2020): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Elysian is another heavenly wine from this estate that shows a more elegant, seamless style with its incredible perfume of crème de cassis, graphite, white flowers, flowery incense, and unsmoked tobacco. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it offers building tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. About as seamless as they come, with ultra-fine tannins and flawless balance, this heavenly, seamless, magical wine will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 40 years or more.

WA 100 (11/2021): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Elysian (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) hits the ground running with the most powerful, profound nose of violets, dark chocolate, crushed rocks, Morello cherries and rose oil, over a core of crushed blackcurrants and fresh, juicy blackberries, plus wafts of plum pudding and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with tightly wound layers of black fruits and minerals, framed by exquisitely ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. Prepare to have your mind blown! (Drink between 2025-2050).

JD 100 (12/2021): Even better, and a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Elysian is a tiny cellar selection that brings even more richness and depth while not giving an inch with regard to finesse and elegance. Gorgeous ripe black fruits, tobacco leaf, crushed violets, and chocolate are just some of the nuances in this puppy, and it's full-bodied, with an expansive, multi-dimensional texture, perfect tannins, and one incredible finish. It's a more textured, fleshy wine than the base Dr. Crane and already offers pleasure, yet it will undoubtedly evolve for over two decades. This is pure Napa Valley brilliance. VM 94 (5/2019): So, let's get one thing out of the way. The 2017 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is not the 2016. That is not a bad thing, as the 2017 has plenty to offer, and won't be the subject of rabid speculation. In the glass, the 2017 is richer, sweeter and more immediate than the much darker and more brooding 2016, with a distinct red fruit character. Best of all, it will drink well upon release. All things considered, Pax Mahle turned out a brilliant Syrah in 2017 and my guess is that less extreme vintages will provide an opportunity for him to match the 2016 – which, in my view, remains his best wine ever. Vineyard sites are Walker Vine Hill, Nellessen Vineyard, Castelli-Knight Ranch and Griffin's Lair. Antonio Galloni.

JD 90? (12/2018): Reminding me of a san soufre Saint Joseph, the 2017 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is all Syrah that was sourced from the Castelli-Knight, Griffins Lair, Walker Viney Hill, and Nellessen Vineyards, saw no destemming, and spent a short ten months in concrete tanks before bottling. This juicy, lively effort offers lots of blue fruits, violets, leafy green herbs, and some leesy notes in a medium to full-bodied, rounded, charming effort that has good acidity. It's forward and ready to go, and given the wild, slightly natural vibe, I suspect best enjoyed over the coming 4-6 years.

Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon

JD 97 (7/2018): A world-class red, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is the most opulent, broad, and expansive offering, yet also elegant and weightless. Offering awesome notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and graphite, it has a Château Margaux-like elegance, full body, sweet tannins, and a great, great finish. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades or more. This cuvée is all clone 337 and was raised in new oak, with just 225 cases produced.

WA 96+ (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is deep garnet-purple colored with crushed blackberries, black cherries and cassis with hints of mocha, tree bark, earth and tobacco. The palate is medium to full-bodied and elegant with great intensity and loads of layers, framed by firm, ripe tannins and finishing long. (Drink between 2020-2048).

VM 91+ (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard offers serious density and power. There is plenty of richness and volume, but the new oak is a bit prominent today. My impression is that the oak will integrate over time, as the 2016 possesses tremendous intensity. The ripe red cherry and plum jam flavors are amped up to the core. This is an especially flamboyant wine from Las Piedras, a site that tends to yield brooding, tannic Cabernets. (Drink between 2021-2031). Antonio Galloni.

Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon

JD 96+ (1/2020): These Quivet Cellars releases are made by Mike Smith, who, for any Napa lover, probably needs no introduction. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is rocking stuff and comes from a brilliant vineyard just outside of St. Helena, not more than a stone’s throw from the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard. This is a classic Cabernet with loads of blue fruits, tobacco, spring flowers, and a terrific sense of minerality. It shows more floral notes with time in the glass, is medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, has remarkable purity, and a great finish. It should pick up additional nuances and complexity with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+.

VM 90 (1/2020): The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is pushed to the max. Ripe, jammy fruit and a muscular feel that is so characteristic of Las Piedras Cabernets yields a wine that is quite distinctive. Super-ripe dark fruit, leather, menthol and chocolate are pushed forward in this overt-flamboyant Cabernet. Antonio Galloni.

WA 91 (10/2019): The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is deep garnet-purple colored with medicinal, baked black and blue fruit, herbs and cedar. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and juicy with good expression.

JD 100 (12/2021): Pure perfection in a glass, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Crane Vineyard is all varietal and comes from this remarkable site just outside St. Helena. A wine that offers incredible richness and depth while staying flawlessly balanced and weightless, it offers up a kaleidoscope-like array of blackcurrants, cassis, tobacco leaf, wildflowers, and scorched earth. As seamless and silky as they come, it has perfect tannins, that rare mix of power and elegance, and a monster of a finish. It doesn’t get any better in this reviewer’s opinion.

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon

JD 96 (1/2025): Another wine showing a fresher, juicy style, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard comes from unquestionably one of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley. This deep purple-hued effort offers a lively nose of ripe plums, chocolate, violets, and graphite, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate with fine, nicely integrated tannins, terrific overall balance, and outstanding length. It's a touch more reserved compared to the To Kalon, so give bottles a few years. It should evolve gracefully through at least 2037.

Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon

WA 98+ (10/2020): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from five different blocks, and was harvested "in multiple picks, at a leisurely pace." Deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls sensuously out of the glass with decadent scents of boysenberries, black cherries, redcurrant jelly and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bouquet garni, black soil and iron ore. Full-bodied, the taut, tightly knit black and red fruit has a firm structure of ripe, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing very long with loads of earth and mineral nuances coming through. (Drink between 2022-2055).

JD 98+ (1/2021): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kolan is beautiful, offering a more backward, reserved expression of this vineyard than usual, although no less impressive. Beautiful crème de cassis, graphite, white chocolate, and floral notes emerge from the glass, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, with ample tannins and mid-palate depth. Tight, backward, and closed, yet with incredible purity, hide bottles for 4-5 years and it should keep for 20-30 years. It’s incredibly well done, and I’d be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar. VM 97+ (1/2021): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard is a huge, massive wine. Powerful tannins wrap around a core of blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, spice, licorice and dark spice. This is the most potent, structured wine in this range from Realm. Readers have to be patient. This full-throttle, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon has plenty to offer, but it needs time in bottle to truly shine. (Drink between 2024-2038). Antonio Galloni.

WA 100 (12/2015): The perfect 2013 The Bard is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, coming from four vineyards that Realm uses consistently -- B Weitz, Houyi, Blair and of course, the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane in St. Helena. There are 950 cases of this extraordinary wine, which has it all. Notes of graphite, blackberries, roasted espresso and chocolate are followed by a wine of enormous, massive extraction, richness and intensity, but no hard edges. This seamless work of vinous haute couture is staggeringly rich, very long, but not the least bit heavy or overbearing. This is a killer effort that's already showing enormous complexity but should age effortlessly for 15 or more years.

VM 93 (10/2015): The 2013 The Bard is the most intriguing of the three Realm blends because it has enough freshness and overall energy to balance the more overt elements. Inky blue and purplish fruit, spices, new leather and savory herbs flesh out in a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that is both opulent and also vibrant, with plenty of detail and nuance, not to mention enough underlying tannin to drink well for the better part of the next decade, perhaps longer. Most of this fruit emerges from Blair, a site in Calistoga. Antonio Galloni.

WS 92 (11/2016): Delivers a powerful combination of dark berry, dried herb, underbrush and stylish oak. Most impressive are the licorice and blackberry flavors on the finish, revealing extraction, tension and character. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2030. 950 cases made.

The Bard Proprietary Blend

JD 96 (1/2020): Based mostly on Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) and a small amount of Merlot (13%), the 2017 The Bard is another ripe, sexy wine that has more sweetness of fruit than most in the vintage. Black cherries, blackberries, scorched earth, graphite, and some violets notes all dominate the nose, and it's beautifully textured and balanced on the palate. It’s beautiful today yet has 15-20 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

WS 94 (11/2016): Offers a powerful, extracted, high-torque core of zesty blackberry, wild berry, anise, licorice and crushed rock flavors. Sails a steady course once underway, ending where it starts, with a dense mix of complex earth and berry notes. Best from 2020 through 2033. 650 cases made.

WA 94 (10/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Lpv comes from clone 337. This is a rather earthy style for a Schrader wine, with less drama and flamboyance, but great fruit, a more meaty, dusty style with underbrush as well as blackcurrants, with spicy oak. It’s dense, full-bodied and promises to age nicely for 20 more years.
