JS 98 (2/2013): An impressively structured wine. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets. Full body, with velvety and rich tannins. Very tannic and powerful yet the tannins are polished and pretty. Layers of everything here. Give this another three to four years before opening.
VM 95 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. Dark red cherries, plums, spices, leather and tobacco wrap around the palate as this dense, powerful wine starts to open up. Expressive aromatics are woven throughout, giving the 2007 a measure of polish and sophistication that is not always present in this wine when it is young. Finessed, suave tannins reinforce an impression of elegance. The 2007 can be enjoyed with minimum cellaring, but it will also age gracefully for many years. Readers who want to try the 2007 today should give the wine plenty of air, as the more refined qualities only emerge over time. When tasted next to the 2006, the 2007 shows redder tonalities of fruit and less sheer muscle. Hints of tobacco, crushed flowers and spices wrap around the sensual finish. Drink 2017-2027. WS 91 (8/2012): A big, muscular style, yet with sweet fruit to balance the dense tannins. Black cherry, plum, tobacco and soy flavors mingle, and this has some elevated alcohol on the finish. Best on the early side. Best from 2013 through 2024. 4,500 cases made. |

WA 93 (6/2013): A complex mix of savory herbs, plums black cherries, leather and sweet spices emerges from the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. Beautifully layered from start to the finish, the 2008 impresses for its exceptional balance and finesse. Its mid-weight style will likely come as a surprise to Valdicava fans, but all the elements come together in the glass. Proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese describes 2008 as a solid vintage across the board, but without the peaks of quality that would have allowed him to make the flagship Madonna del Piano. Instead. Abbruzzese bottled just one Brunelli, and it is fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.
WS 91 (6/2013): Candied cherry and berry notes are framed by sweet, spicy oak in this perfumed red. There are firm tannins underneath, but the lasting impression is of sweet fruit. Round and long on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032. |

JS 99 (1/2015): Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plum, flower, licorice and mushroom. Full body with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured but shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal. Better in 2016.

Dark red cherries, mint, game, smoke, tobacco and licorice are all deeply expressive in a mid-weight, very classic feeling Brunello long on class and personality. Big yet silky tannins frame the dramatic, intense finish. The Valdicava wines are always big, but the 2010 is a bit pulled back, and striking. Antonio Galloni.

The list goes on. The wine's mouthfeel is best characterized by softness and structure, a two-fold approach that gives high hopes for the long aging potential of this wine. JS 98 (1/2019): A juicy, young Brunello with berry, dried mushroom and flower character. Orange peel, too. Full body, firm and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. So complex and beautiful. It goes on for minutes. I love the balance that makes it so enjoyable to try now but it will age for decades ahead. Try to leave it until 2021.
WA 94 (2/2018): Valdicava's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautifully saturated expression that opens to a dark garnet appearance and a soothing, velvety texture. The bouquet is packed tight with dark berry nuances, starting with ripe cherry and extending to black fruit tones of fresh prune and plum. The wine's strongest cards are its texture, structure and its power. This is a cool vintage that produced very fine and accessible wines. This expression, however, shows a very different personality with ample volume and long staying power. Some 56,100 bottles were produced.
VM 93 (4/2018): Deep red. Ample aromas of blackberry, red cherry, and violet, plus a whiff of violet. Dense, creamy and concentrated, offering savory flavors of ripe red cherry, licorice and cocoa lifted by nicely integrated acidity. Finishes quite fleshy, with youthfully chewy tannins and outstanding length. This Brunello may not be the last word in refinement, but it is hard to argue with its early appeal and deliciousness. WS 92 (6/2018): This is fresh and harmonious, evoking cherry, plum, leather, iron and coffee notes. The tannins are well-integrated with the rich texture and the finish is long and tinged with tobacco. Best from 2020 through 2033. 4,675 cases made, 1,800 cases imported. |

| WA 93 (1/2009): The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a super-ripe, opulent wine that resembles the 1997 in its generous, full-bodied personality. The tannins are surprisingly well-balanced within the context of this challenging vintage. The 2003 should drink well relatively early for this Riserva. All things considered, this is a superb effort. Production was down sharply in 2003. The estate bottled just 13,000 bottles of this wine compared to the typical production of 23,000 bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. |

WA 96+ (4/2010): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano continues to develop very positively. This huge, concentrated Madonna del Piano dazzles for the richness of its fruit and the delineation of its aromas. The clean, vibrant finish suggests many years of cellaring potential. The Valdicava Brunellos are often misunderstood when young because they possess so much richness, but with time in bottle the wines turn more delicate and complete. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
WS 96 (6/2010): Intense aromas of blackberry, blueberry and mineral, with just the right amount of licorice and mineral. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a beautiful finish. Best after 2012. 2,415 cases made.
JS 95 (1/2011): This is drinking a little tight at the moment. Still, the bright and decadent fruit give way to nice chewy tannins. Very complex, full bodied, and balanced. This needs some time to come back around. Drink this after 2012.
VM 88 (7/2010): Very dark ruby-red with a light rim. Overripe aromas of red cherry, plum and underbrush give the nose a blowsy quality. Then sweet and creamy in the mouth, with pretty balsamic nuances to the ripe red and black fruit flavors. This rather fat wine finishes with decent complexity and smooth tannins, but I found myself wishing for a little more finesse. |

WA 95 (4/2012): The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano looks to be a modern-day version of the 1990. Layers of seamless fruit grace the palate in this large-scaled, dramatic Brunello. The 2007 boasts remarkable intensity to match its undeniably sexy personality. Although the 2007 will require at least several years in bottle to blossom, the relatively soft tannins will make it more pleasurable than the 2006 at the outset. Both vintages will be fascinating to follow over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
WS 95 (5/2013): A vibrant, taut style, delivering aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, spice and mineral tightly wound around a core of steely acidity and dense tannins. Well-proportioned and set for a long evolution, this version is very fresh and long. Best from 2016 through 2035. |

Black cherry, smoke, licorice, dark spices and menthol make a strong first impression, followed by huge waves of tannin and acidity that will require at least a few years to settle down. JS 98 (4/2018): A complex red with rose petals, violets, crushed stones and cherries follows through to a full body and chewy tannins that are poised and polished. Extremely long and intense. A top wine for the vintage. This needs three or four years, maybe more, to come together.
WS 96 (6/2018): This is opulent and powerful, offering black cherry, black currant, plum, leather, iron and tobacco flavors boosted by the racy acidity. Overall, this feels firm and complex, with a long finish. Not your typical style from the northern part of the Brunello di Montalcino zone, yet compelling. Best from 2022 through 2038. 650 cases made, 300 cases imported.
VM 95+ (4/2018): Deep ruby-red. Toasty oak and vanilla complicate red cherry and underbrush aromas and flavors. Then rich, dense and concentrated, but lovely violet lift provides clarity and cut to the suave flavors of red cherry, red currant, flint and vanilla. Much deeper and richer than the 2013 Brunello from Valdicava, this beautiful wine finishes very long and ultra-smooth. It is the best wine I have ever had from this estate. Ian d'Agata.
WA 93 (2/2018): The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a dark and thickly extracted expression. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. At its leisure, it will deliver dried blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, spice, campfire ash and sticky tar. There is some tannic astringency that will (hopefully) integrate with time. This is a hearty and satisfying wine to drink in the heart of winter with gentle snowflakes fluttering outside your window. It is a romantic wine in heart and soul. |

JS 98 (1/2019): This opens with savory, truffle and meaty aromas with a complex and quite cryptic nose that delivers a wealth of ripe plums and cherries, cedar and fresh, violet-like flowers, as well as some earthy nuances. The palate has a very sturdy, intense and power-charged core of rich plums and dark cherries, framed in quite fierce tannins that are so long. Super Brunello Riserva here with great potential. Try from 2022.
WA 96 (1/2019): Showing ripe and balanced fruit, the Valdicava 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano (with 15,666 bottles produced) offers many very positive attributes. The wine flaunts a slightly contemporary or international side, and it does so with extreme confidence and elegance. Much of that natural balance comes directly from the classic vintage that exhibits both the structure and acidity necessary for prolonged cellar aging. Now, in the wine's youngest phase, it offers lush primary cherry and blackberry flavors followed carefully by measured spice, toast and red rose potpourri.
WS 93 (6/2019): Ripe, offering cherry, plum and floral aromas and flavors, matched to a rich texture. Tobacco and iron notes emerge as this builds to a lengthy finish. A touch dry on the finish, but the sweet fruit returns in the end. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.
VM 92+ (3/2019): Deep ruby. Slightly reticent nose hints at black cherry, herbs and flint. Then juicy and bright, with deep flavors of minerals, blueberry and red cherry, complicated by peppery herbs. Closes long with repeating mineral nuances. A sleeping giant, the fruit is having a tough time emerging currently but I’d say there’s plenty there, just lying beneath the wine’s noble tannic cloak. Cellar this very refined Brunello for five or six years to see how it develops. Ian D'Agata |
