VM 94 (6/2017): Utterly consistent with the character of the corresponding Kabinett and Spätlese, this projects quince, honeydew, cherry and lime, coolingly and alluringly laced with mint, basil and wintergreen, and wreathed in seductive, lily-like perfume such as one would more likely encounter from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Certainly this is sweeter than its lower-Prädikat counterparts, but sweetness is not what’s on one’s mind while enjoying it, and there is also liveliness to the fresh, juicy lime component that conveys refreshment rare for an Auslese and pushes back against the wine’s residual sugar. The overall impression is lusciously sorbet-like. The feel is glossy and slightly viscous but buoyant, and in this respect, too, the sense of citricity is highly efficacious, engendering remarkable liveliness for an Auslese that offsets the wine’s richness. The superbly sustained finish cools and soothes even as it animates and refreshes. (Drink between 2017-2040). David Schildknecht.
WA 93 (4/2017): The 2015 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese is very clear, fresh, cool and aromatic, characterized by its ripe and intense fruit aromas, as well as its blue slate flavors. Sweet, dense, lush and piquant, this Riesling has a lovely juiciness and mineral backbone. This is a very intense, but vital and gorgeously succulent Auslese that is great fun to drink, even today. The finish is clear, firm, piquant and salty, indicating a serious, long distance-running Riesling. |

Freshness and vivacity are the watchwords for a refreshingly lingering, multifaceted finish underlain by wet stone and supportively but only subtly kissed with sweetness. | VM 92 (6/2017): Imagine a mingling of honeydew melon and green herbal liqueurs with a bit of caramel. The results are both rich in faintly spirituous and torrefactive ways, yet at the same time cooling. At only seven percent alcohol, this harbors correspondingly high residual sugar and its sweetness is probably concealing some finer points of flavor. Expansive, luscious and buoyant, it finishes with memorable sheer length, if not for now the complexity, clarity or elegance exhibited by most of the wines in this superb Prüm collection. But give it some time. (It’s uncertain whether there will be dedicated Lay bottlings from this estate. | WA 91 (6/2009): Musk melon, peach, black currant, and botrytis-inflected suggestions of caramel, white raisin, and pungent spice fill the nose from Prum’s 2007 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese. A considerable measure of yeasty and CO2-engendered aromas needs to clear off before this really begins to show its formidable stuff. Creamy in texture and quite unlike the corresponding Spatlese, it displays more than enough energy, concentration, and sheer length, but needs time to harmonize and focus. |

| WA 92 (12/2010): The Prum 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese mingles spiced apple, papaya, pink grapefruit, cassis, and white raisin in a lush, creamily-textured, pungently botrytis-tinged performance full-throated from nose through peacock’s finishing flourish, and hard to beat for sheer diversity and audacity of fruit. If you’re looking for nuance of for characteristics that might be described as in any sense “mineral,” then perhaps in a dozen years you’ll find them here, otherwise search elsewhere. But in reality this is a wine that deserves a long time in the cellar and is apt to retain and add to its present virtues over a 30 year period. |

You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. |

The palate is light, with a lovely, smooth, lithe backdrop of sweet mandarin and clementine. The 2022 is tart, sweet, ripe, aromatic and rather serene with just a touch of zestiness. | VM 94 (6/2017): This was the first – among very few – wines in the 2015 Prüm lineup to lead with a bit of yeasty fermentative “Mosel stink,” but that veil soon parted more than sufficiently to showcase an alliance of ripe honeydew melon with cassis, grapefruit, and hints of cress and lemon peel that subsequently lend incisive, piquant invigoration on a delicate, polished, infectiously juicy palate. Penetrating and sharply focused, but without its efficacious and enlivening acids turning at all aggressive, the tinglingly, refreshingly citric yet soothing and cooling finish serves up a shimmering array of stony, smoky, alkaline and crystalline nuances. | WA 93 (2/2012): A Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #17 allies ennobled richness of vanilla- and honey-tinged apple and alluring creaminess of texture to juicy vivacity of citrus; low alcohol levity; and transparency to nuances of honeysuckle and heliotrope perfume, crushed stone and brown spices. The palpably high extract here and hint of chewy fruit skin do not detract from an overriding sense of polish and buoyancy. While its at once soothing and stimulating long finish is ravishingly long, it will take time for this Auslese to reveal what is probably an advantage in nascent, nuanced complexity vis-a-vis the corresponding Bernkasteler. Time will as always be on its side, and I would not recommend seriously tucking into bottles of this for at least 12-15 years, with expectations for it to hit age 40 acting youthful. (I did not have opportunity to taste a corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #27.) |

WA 94 (4/2013): A yeasty, smoky prickle as well as the effect of dissolved CO2 causes the nose to wrinkle from a glass of Prum’s 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #18, but behind that are heliotrope and lily-of-the-valley along with ripe apple, pear and melons that in turn inform a delicate, subtly creamy palate of striking transparency to stony, crystalline, alkaline and smoky black tea and liquid floral nuances. This shimmers and excites even as it soothes in a lingering, uplifting, glowing finish. It will certainly merit attention for the better part of a half century.
VM 91+ (1/2013): Pale golden yellow. Refined aromas of ripe peach, mango and acacia honey. Creamy and glossy in texture, with a glazed apricot flavor infused with sweet herbal spice. Richer and denser than the spatlese but not obviously better, and long on the finish. |

WA 95 (2/2015): The 2013 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a noble sweet, very fine aroma of wet and flinty stones intertwined with grapefruit and lemon aromas. Lovely sweet and intense, but also delicate on the palate, this medium to full-flavored 7.5% alcohol wine reveals a great elegance and finesse and finishes with delicately juicy, grapefruit aromas. (I tasted AP number #15 14.)
VM 93+ (3/2015): Pale golden yellow. Sublime aromas of apricot, white lime and brown spices. In spite of the rich, glossy nectarine fruit, refreshing acidity makes this Auslese appear light and superbly elegant. VM 94+ (11/2016): This is especially shrouded by yeasty and otherwise fermentative aromas, but site-typical apple, pear and vanilla emerge. The creamy, delicate and expansive palate offers a delightful, chiffon-like mingling of fresh and glazed, confitured fruits. Vanilla bean and fruit seeds provide counterpoint on a lusciously lingering finish transparent to stony and saline inflections as well as haunting floral nuances.
WA 92 (3/2016): The 2014 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is more open than the Graacher Himmelreich (#AP 19) and displays a very delicate bouquet of white fruits intermixed with vegetal and subtle slate aromas. Refined and juicy on the palate, this wine has a perfect balance of a fruity sweetness and a finely racy acidity. This Kabinett is very expressive and complex in its mineral and grippy finish. It is impressively long in the finish, but due to the piquancy and minerality, not due to alcohol that is just 8%. The Sonnenuhr is more complex and intense than the more delicate and filigreed Himmelreich. |

The bouquet is pure, still fairly primary and utterly classical in depth and proportion, delivering a superb constellation of white cherries, delicious apple, a touch of the yellow plum to come in time, a gorgeous signature of slate minerality and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and precise, with lovely depth, ripe, vibrant acids, great focus and grip and a very, very long, pure and energetic finish. This will need at least a decade in the cellar to start to stir, but it will be a great Goldkapsel once it is ready to drink and will live for a very, very long time! Great juice. 2026-2085+. |

On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and precise, with lovely depth, ripe, vibrant acids, great focus and grip and a very, very long, pure and energetic finish. | VM 91 (1/2020): Seldom have I observed such a striking difference between a youthful Prüm Kabinett from Graacher Himmelreich and one from Wehlener Sonnenuhr as in this vintage. Heady honeysuckle and gardenia are accompanied on the nose by very ripe pear and Persian melon, anticipating the inner-mouth perfume and lush fruit that deploy on a glossy, buoyant palate. Pear seed piquancy serves for welcome counterpoint on a finish that is luscious, rounded and highly imposing, if lacking the brightness or energy conveyed at this stage by the corresponding Graacher.
