WA 95 (5/2011): The 2008 Chapelle-Chambertin will thrill readers who admire cool, inward Burgundies built for the long haul. The 2008 Chapelle is tight, powerful and vibrant but also immensely gifted in its fresh, vibrant perfume and clean, mineral-laced fruit. All of the elements are in place for this to develop into a splendid, hugely rewarding wine, but patience is the key. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. VM 91 (4/2011): Palish medium red. Deeply pitched aromas of very ripe wild red berries, cherry and smoked meat; almost a roasted quality here. Fat for a 2008, fuller and wilder than the Capita. Also more animal and less minerally. Finishes a bit youthfully clenched. BH 90-93 (1/2010): (from two parcels of vines, one planted in '65 and the other in '38). As is typically the case, this trades elegance for complexity but the good news is that compromises often work well as the expressive nose has the attributes of each with red and blue pinot fruit aromas possessing notes of earth, stone and underbrush, all of which carry over to the textured, powerful, focused and solidly structured flavors, all wrapped in a dusty and palate staining finish. This is notably firmer than the Latricières and will require a few more years in the cellar to arrive at its apogee. Drink 2018+. |

VM 92 (3/2017): Light-medium red. Wonderfully scented nose combines strawberry, cherry, dried rose and earth. Very pure, silky wine with subtle sweetness and a seamless texture to its sappy fruit, spice and saline mineral flavors. Boasts a terrific combination of thickness and energy. Most impressive today on the unflagging, classically dry finish, which leaves behind a cherry perfume. Really positive use of whole clusters here. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-92 (1/2016): (from a blend of 3 1ers that include Corbeaux, En Ergot and Combottes.) Here too there is a discreet application of wood framing the overtly floral aromas that include both lavender and rose along with notes of earth and freshly crushed red berries. The beautifully sleek and intense middle weight flavors exhibit an appealing hint of minerality on the refined, balanced and dusty finish. Lovely and understated. Drink 2024+. |

BH 93 (1/2018): (from a blend of 3 1ers that include Corbeaux, En Ergot and Combottes; 100% whole cluster vinification.) This is perhaps the most floral-inflected wine in the range with its exceptionally pretty nose that reflects notes of lavender, lilac, rose and violet along with earthy and fresh red currant aromas that are trimmed in subtle but not invisible wood influence. This is also quite generously proportioned with fine mid-palate concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the powerful and well-balanced finish. This very firmly structured effort is going to require extended cellaring to arrive its full apogee yet it's not so backward that it couldn't be enjoyed after 5-ish years of cellaring. In a word, excellent. Drink 2030+. Outstanding! VM 90 (1/2018): (the highest in octane of these 2015s at 14%; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Liqueur-like raspberry and plum on the nose. Generous, fat and rich in the middle palate, with captivating sweetness. Big, ripe tannins then shorten the wine's fruit on the back end, giving the finish a somewhat aggressive character. This wine struck me as much more vibrant and delineated from barrel in late 2016 but in bottle it's wanting in energy and definition. I'm not positive that this bottle is representative, but Trapet told me that he harvested this fruit on September 11, when grape sugars were skyrocketing. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (1/2018): A discreet application of wood frames the even more complex nose of high-toned, cool and airy aromas of red and dark cherry, forest floor, rose petal and spice elements. The sleek, intense and once again highly sophisticated middle weight plus flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that buffers the even firmer tannic spine shaping the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is relatively succulent for a young Latricières but I suspect that the present inviting mouthfeel will be replaced in short order by something firmer and more austere. In short, this is stunningly good but it is not likely to make for especially inviting early drinking. Drink 2035+. VM 94 (1/2018): Good medium red. Subtle, deeply pitched nose combines dark berries, violet and a sexy, slightly wild smoky quality. Wonderfully rich and suave in the style of the vintage's best examples, but with surprising energy to frame the flavors of purple fruits, violet, earth and game. I love this wine's combination of sucrosite and whole-cluster (40%) pungency. The slowly-rising finish saturates the palate with fine-grained tannins and subtle, building minerality. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (1/2008): A brooding but fresh nose trimmed in a bit of wood spice offers positively gorgeous aromatic breadth and merges into intense, well muscled and very focused full-bodied and overtly powerful flavors that are concentrated and very firmly structured yet the structure is almost completely buffered by the buckets of extract that confer an almost velvety quality to the hugely long finish. This is still very primary and will require the better part of two decades to really be arrive at its full potential. A seriously impressive Cham that is brilliantly balance. Wow! Drink: 2020+ VM 95+ (4/2008): Good deep red. Sappy, deep aromas of raspberry and smoked meat; this could only be from Gevrey-Chambertin. Large-scaled, rich and sweet, but with no impression of excess weight to its sappy, mineral-driven flavors. Wonderfully silky, round and deep. This shifts to an even higher gear on the back end, which features an explosion of sweet fruits, suave tannins and great rising, palate-staining length. Has the structure and impeccable balance for a long and glorious evolution in bottle. WA 93+ (4/2007): The Trapet 2005 Chambertin comes from three (I am told) geologically distinct parcels. Bitter-sweet cherry, anisette, and mocha scent the nose. In the mouth this is undeniably expansive and rich, with complexities of gamey meatiness and humus mingling with its sweet berry fruit. Whether it is some negative synergy with the barrel or just the result of recent bottling, I find a slight sour streak in the finish. But a small (and hopefully fleeting) blemish can be easily hidden amid such folds of fruit, viscosity and abundant, fine-grained tannin as are on display . This is perfect for those who want a friendly bear of a Burgundy they can hug - preferably in around ten years’ time. |

VM 94+ (4/2011): Medium red. Blueberry, minerals and spices on the nose, lifted by notes of rose and white pepper. Pure and silky but with terrific inner-mouth tension to the sappy crushed fruit flavors. Denser than the Latricieres, but every bit as vibrant--and more backward today. Finishes with ripe tannins and subtly complex notes of fruit, game and saline, smoky underbrush. Superb. BH 93 (1/2011): (from a 2 ha parcel that runs from the bottom to the very top of the slope.) A pure, airy and very cool nose of pungent minerality and slightly sauvage red berries is the epitome of aromatic elegance and serves as a graceful introduction to the broad-shouldered and sleekly muscular flavors that possess good freshness and plenty of vibrancy while culminating in an intensely mineral-driven, focused and powerful finish that is wonderfully persistent, linear and extremely tight. This too will need plenty of time to unwind, which I estimate at between 14 to 18 years. Drink 2023+. WA 92+ (6/2010): Cedar, licorice, ripe dark berries, and raw beef mark the nose of Trapet’s 2008 Chambertin. Berry skin tartness and peaty pungency convey invigoration, while pure sweetness of berry fruit and vivid meatiness vie for one’s primary attention. There is a crushed stone note that lends a hint of austerity to otherwise energetically bright and decidedly palate-staining finishing proceedings. Like several of the 2008s here, this may have been suffering a bit from recent bottling as there is a slight sense of constriction where I would otherwise expect the wine to open up more. Still, this is impressive juice with at least 12-15 year potential. |

BH 96 (1/2012): (From 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) A relatively high-toned nose that is cool, restrained and notably more floral offers up notes of stone, game, underbrush, humus and a noble vegetal note on the red cherry and cassis suffused nose. The intensely mineral-driven and vibrant flavors possess real muscle and drive continue onto the very firm, palate staining and youthfully austere finish. Like the Latricières, this fantastic effort will best suit the patient as this is very unlikely to develop quickly. In short, this is a knockout. Drink 2024+. WA 96 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambertin shows some of the openness of the Chapelle but the structural elements more closely resemble the Latricieres. If that sounds appealing, believe me, it is. Trapet’s Chambertin exudes class and pedigree in its impeccable layered fruit, gorgeous detail and silky, textured finish. Striking, beautifully delineated aromatics are woven throughout. Simply put, the Chambertin is a must-have wine in this vintage. In 2009 the Chambertin was made with 40% whole clusters, slightly more than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2049. VM 96+ (3/2012): (50% new oak, the same as the Chapelle-Chambertin): Good medium red. Wonderfully complex, high-pitched nose combines musky raspberry, strong minerality, lavender and wild herbs; soil-driven but not earthy. Like liquid silk on entry, then sappy and imploded in the mouth, with complex soil hints, no hard edges and a wonderfully light touch for such a seamless wine. Less high-pitched than the nose suggests, but this amazingly fine-grained Chambertin is lifted and framed by superb mineral energy. Really explodes with aeration, finishing with noble tannins and a powerful impression of terroir. This should evolve in bottle for decades. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (1/2015): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha, 90% whole cluster.) This is ultra-cool and restrained aromatically with its airy and even elegant aromas of intensely floral, spicy and stony wild dark berry scents that are also trimmed in just enough wood to warrant commenting on. There is a gorgeous texture to the equally mineral-inflected and muscular broad-shouldered and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a Zen-like harmony on the impeccably well-balanced, moderately austere and hugely long finish. This should be genuinely wonderful if given at least a decade's snooze in a cool cellar. I should also note that by the standards of this wine the 2012 version is not super-powerful but I very much like the sense of harmony. Drink 2027+. VM 96 (3/2015): (90% vendange entier, from grapes Trapet described as perfect): Good medium red, a bit less dark than the Latricières. Musky aromas of redcurrant, flint, red licorice and rocky minerality lifted by a floral topnote. Enters the mouth with great breadth, then tightens up dramatically in the middle, conveying an almost 2010-like tautness to its raspberry and crushed stone flavors. Actually comes across today as less thick and sweet than the Latricières, and utterly weightless. Builds inexorably to a crescendo on the explosive, gripping back end, which leaves the palate vibrating with licorice and peppery herbs. I love the stem influence here. Should make a classic, monumental Chambertin. WA 94 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine J-L Trapet has a very perfumed, mint-tinged bouquet with desiccated orange peel infusing the slightly oxidised maraschino and strawberry fruit. It is very contained - never fully lets go. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, very supple tannin, plenty of juicy red cherry fruit, but feels a tad flat-footed towards the finish. It does not quite possess the chutzpah of its peers at the moment, though Trapet's Chambertin consistently repays cellaring. |

BH 95 (1/2017): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha; 50% whole cluster.) This possesses an intensely floral nose with its equally cool and restrained array of rose, lavender and violet scents that add elegance to the distinctly spicy and earthy red and dark berry fruit scents that are also tinged by herbal tea nuances. There is excellent volume to the fleshy yet well-detailed and explicitly powerful big-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent power on the palate staining and hugely long finish. This intensely mineral-driven effort is most impressive but again note well that I would recommend buying this only if you have the requisite patience to cellar it accordingly as it's absolutely going to need it. As an aside it's going to be very interesting to see over time which wine among these three grands crus is ultimately the most interesting. Drink 2032+. VM 94+ (3/2017): Palish medium red, like most of these 2014s. Subdued, musky, soil-driven scents of raspberry, plum, spices, flowers and earth. Wonderfully tactile and deep but a bit youthfully brooding today and distinctly less sexy and sweet than the Latricières. Salty minerality currently overshadows the wine's red fruits and flowers but this remarkably thick wine boasts the most authoritative, gripping finish of this set of 2014s. I suspect that extended aging will bring an even higher score but this wine is going to need a long time in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93-96 (1/2018): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) Reduction dominates at present. However there is excellent freshness and underlying tension to the superbly well-concentrated and intensely mineral drive big-bodied flavors that flash plenty of classic Chambertin muscle on the youthfully austere and very backward finish that is explosively long. This is seriously good and the density is such that this is pretty much a block of stone today. Patience, and a lot of it, ist going to be needed here but if you have it, this is potentially a great Chambertin. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! |
