WA 96 (4/2003): A monumental wine that has gained weight considerably, the 2000 Clos l'Eglise seems to be every bit as powerful, rich, and potentially complex as the surreal 1998, which also seems to be growing in stature in the bottle. Deep ruby/purple, with a nose of cocoa, toffee, plum, fig, and blackberry, the wine has a full-bodied palate impression, with extraordinary purity, texture, and that multi-layered, highly nuanced finish that goes on for close to a minute. This wine has turned out to be spectacular, and even better from bottle than it was from cask. Nevertheless, it is a wine that will require more patience than the 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025. Kudos!
VM 93 (6/2003): Full ruby-red. Superripe, alluring aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur, mocha, coffee, game, violet and truffle. Thick, concentrated and sexy, with perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine uncanny vivacity and lightness of touch considering its great ripeness and richness. Underlying minerality contributes to the impression of precision. Very intensely flavored and long on personality. An utterly captivating drink. |

WA 95 (6/2004): The 2001 offers a huge spectrum of aromas, including notes of smoke, mocha, chocolate, coffee, and loads of blackberry, cherry, and currant fruit. The superb aromatics are followed by an elegant, medium-bodied, deliciously supple-textured, expansive, fleshy, beautifully pure, well-delineated Pomerol. It is a brilliant effort as well as one of the candidates for the wine of the appellation in 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014.
VM 91 (6/2004): Medium ruby. Compelling aromas of candied currant and cherry, tobacco and roasted nuts. Suave, silky and sappy, with smoky berry and plum flavors framed and intensified by harmonious acidity. Dense, sweet, rich and seductive. Finishes ripely tannic, subtle and long. Delicious, archetypical Pomerol. Stephen Tanzer. |

JD 92-94 (4/2018): Another pretty, elegant wine in the vintage, the 2017 Clos l'eglise (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc aging in new barrels) offers a forward, medium-bodied, ultra-fine and seamless profile as well as classic Merlot fruit, spice and floral aromas and flavors. It’s not a blockbuster but shines for its purity of fruit, ripe tannin, and impressive length. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet also evolve gracefully.
VM 92-95 (5/2018): The 2017 Clos L'Eglise is a wine that brings together power, tension and energy. There is quite a bit of richness to the fruit, but also plenty of supporting structure. Beams of underlying tannin give the 2017 its drive and sense of direction, while keeping the flavors perked up. Bright red stone fruit, mint and white pepper lead into a sculpted finish lifted by striking floral notes. This is a decidedly tannic, tightly wound Pomerol that is going to require patience, but it is also hugely promising. The 2017 was done in 100% new 300L barrels. Antonio Galloni.
