Helena Dakota Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$109 |
5 |
|
|
WA 94+ (12/2010): The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota is a slightly softer, but still structured, meaty effort with impressive levels of black cherries, black currants and a steely, crushed rock-like minerality. Like its sibling, it is full-bodied, tannic and deep, but with less of the burning ember/scorched earth character. It offers pure floral, concentrated fruit and beautiful purity, symmetry and balance. Nevertheless, it, too, will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring and should drink well over the following three decades. |

Buccella |
2015 |
Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
VM 95 (12/2018): Buccella's 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is an outrageously beautiful wine. It is also going to need a least a few years to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Inky, flamboyant and super-concentrated, the 2015 almost tastes like a barrel sample, so primary is its fruit! Silky tannins and plush textures only add to the wine's considerable appeal. I am very intrigued to see how the 2015 ages, although I doubt most readers will have the patience to find out. This sumptuous, racy Cabernet has so much to offer. Antonio Galloni. |

Caymus |

40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
WA 96 (10/2014): They appear to be immune to some of winedom’s less than intelligent trends and fads that we see from time to time, and the result is a spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary offering. Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. This full-bodied effort is a fabulous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tribute to this amazing family. It is so good now, why wait? However, I’m sure that like most vintages of Caymus, it will last for 20-25 years. Amazing! WS 91 (11/2014): Lavishly oaked, with creamy mocha, vanilla, cedar and anise notes at the edge of a rich core of dark berry, plum and black licorice flavors. Tight, focused and persistent, showing a seductive character. Drink now through 2026. 122,158 cases made. VM 85 (12/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary from Caymus hits the palate with a rush of dark cherry, plum, Coke, chocolate, brandy, spices and sweet new oak. There is good texture, viscosity and immediacy to the fruit at first, but the sickly sweet new oak and vanillin become overpowering soon after, totally covering the fruit and attenuating the mid-palate and finish. Thankfully, the finish is short. Even by today's standards in Napa Valley, this is a decidedly sweet style of Cabernet Sauvignon quite unlike pretty much anything else I tasted this year. Antonio Galloni. |

2020 |
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon |
$69 |

|
|
JD 88 (10/2023): The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is enjoyable, with a balanced, medium-bodied style as well as some classic sweet currant and chocolate aromatics, plenty of spice, light tannins, and a short finish. Coming from an incredibly challenging vintage, this has charm and will drink well for 3-5 years. |

Joseph Phelps |
2004 |
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon |
$50 |

|
|
WA 90 (12/2007): Cabernet Sauvignon at Phelps is represented by the opulent 2004 Napa, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. A sexy style of Cabernet, dark ruby/purple-colored, with notes of subtle herbs intermixed with black currant, cedar, and spice, this medium to full-bodied wine should be drunk over the next 7-8 years. |

Myriad |
2017 |
Empyrean Beckstoffer Georges III Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$169 |

|
|
JD 97 (1/2020): One of the top two or three wines of the vintage, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Empyrean boasts an inky purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of blue fruits, melted licorice, scorched earth, and subtle oak. With full-bodied richness, beautiful depth of fruit, mid-palate concentration, and both flawlessly integrated tannins and acidity, this layered, opulent 2017 will benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for 20-25 years or more. (Drink between 2024-2049) VM 93 (1/2020): Myriad's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Empyream has a bit more energy and structure than the straight Georges III in 2017, and that helps balancing some of the more overt elements in the fruit. Curiously, these blocks were picked a bit later than those used for the straight Georges III. All the elements simply fall into place, with dark fruit, chocolate, leather and earthy accents that are all so typical of this Rutherford site. Antonio Galloni. WA 90+ (10/2019): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Empyrean is broody and closed, slowly giving baked black currants, plum preserves, black forest cake and garrigue with fertile loam, new leather and cigar box notions. Medium to full-bodied and firm, it is a little bitter and chewy and lean on the mid palate, finishing long. |

2013 |
Pedregal Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$155 |
1 |
|
|
VM 95 (3/2017): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stuffing and potential here. Antonio Galloni. |

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars |
2016 |
Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon |
$69 |
1 |
|
|
WA 92 (10/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Deep purple-black in color, it opens with notions of crushed black cherries, warm blackberries and mulberries with hints of unsmoked cigars, fragrant soil and wild sage plus a waft of allspice. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with expressive black berry and earthy layers with a frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. JD 93 (1/2019): The only red presented, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis checks in as 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec, all aged in 30% new French and 4% new American oak. Ripe blackberries, black cherries, spice, and a beautiful floral quality all emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort. With some creamy oak, sweet tannins, and good purity, it’s a pleasure-bent red to drink over the coming 10-15 years. |

Hayne Vyd. Petite Sirah Scuffed Label |
$85 |
2 |
|
|
WA 96 (8/2003): The 2001 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard’s black/purple color is accompanied by a compelling bouquet of black fruits, graphite, and white flowers reminiscent of a top-flight Hermitage. Tremendously rich, full-bodied, and viscous, with 13.2% alcohol, sweet tannin, and well-integrated wood, this profound Petite Syrah will be at its finest between 2008-2020+. This is truly magnificent stuff with great purity, length, and intensity. |

Hayne Vyd. Petite Sirah |
$79 |

|
|
VM 94 (5/2015): Healthy bright ruby; really remarkably fresh color for a 13-year-old wine. Compelling, rather primary nose offers scents of raspberry, lavender, mocha and game. Thick and opulent in the mouth, but with plenty of acidity to counter its very rich flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, espresso and licorice. A distinctly wild wine that still needs a few years for its substantial fine-grained tannins to resolve. Very long on the aftertaste. A spectacular Petite Sirah. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93-95 (2/2005): The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. |

WA 92-94 (12/2006): Not surprisingly, one of the great Petite Syrahs made in this vintage has again come from the Hayne Vineyard. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. VM 91 (6/2007): Bright medium ruby. High-toned nose shows a porty ripeness to the black raspberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully ripe, sweet and dense, with a plush texture and good inner-mouth lift. Not yet as complex as some past vintages of this wine, but the finish features impressive sweetness and a fine dusting of tannins. |

WA 93-96 (12/2007): Never disappointing, and usually one of the finest Petite Syrahs made in California, the 2006 Petite Sirah Hayne Vineyard once again hits on all cylinders. A blockbuster Petite Sirah, inky purple in color with a glorious nose of charcoal, black raspberry, blueberry, creme de cassis, licorice, and crushed rocks, it is very full-bodied, powerful, with sweet tannin, decent acidity, and a 45+-second finish. This is an infantile wine that will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and last 25-30+ years. VM 92-93 (6/2008): Saturated ruby. Exotic berries, fruity peppercorn, bitter chocolate, flowers, mocha and wet slate on the nose. Wonderfully sappy and fruity in the mouth, with terrific definition to the flavors of crushed dark berries, pepper and spices, along with a suggestion of exotic apricot. The pepper and spice elements linger impressively on the seriously tannic finish. |

|
WA 95-97 (12/2008): A colossal Petite Syrah is the 2007 Hayne Vineyard. Its opaque purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, licorice, camphor, and crushed rocks. It is enormously endowed and extremely powerful, with teeth-staining extract, and an amazing finish that lasts nearly a minute. This is truly great Petite Syrah, but purchasers should be prepared to cellar it for 8-10 years, and watch it unfold brilliantly over the following 25-30. |

|
WA 96-100 (12/2013): Flirting with perfection, the 2012 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard and 2012 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard both have off-the-charts richness as well as opaque black/blue colors, enormously concentrated red, blue and black fruits intermixed with camphor and creosote notes. The Pesenti also reveals a chalky minerality that no doubt is from the limestone soils of that region. They can be drunk for their impressive scale, richness, texture and power in their youth, but they will not exhibit much secondary development for at least a decade. They will still be offering provocative and prodigious drinking 30 to 40 years from now. VM 94 (5/2015): (14.3% alcohol; spent more than 45 days on its skins, according to winemaker Tegan Passalacqua): Saturated ruby to the rim. Complex aromas of citrus peel, dark chocolate and eucalyptus, with fruit in the background in the early going. Hugely rich, layered and deep, with dense, sweet, palate-saturating flavors of dark berries, menthol and dark chocolate. At once broad and energetic, this very powerful, lush wine finishes with thoroughly ripe tannins and Outstanding length. This bottle was much fresher than a sample I tasted a year ago shortly after the bottling. |

2012 |
Hayne Vyd. Zinfandel |
$50 |

|
|
VM 94 (12/2014): The 2012 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is one of the most tannic and structured Zinfandel in Turley's extensive lineup. Tense, brilliant and beautifully sculpted throughout, the 2012 bursts from the glass with explosive concentration and pulsating acididy. Winemaker Tegan Passalacqua gave the 2012 three extra months in barrel, all of which it clearly needed. Readers will have to be patient here. VM 92+ (5/2014): (15.5% alcohol): Good deep red. Brooding aromas of blackberry, tart cherry stomp, black licorice, caraway seed, violet and spicecake. Silky, broad and dry, with excellent intensity to its red cherry and spice flavors. Not a monster of color or thickness--and a bit inexpressive today--but subtle and nuanced. Spreads out nicely on the back end, showing a firm tannic spine and plenty of depth and medicinal dark cherry reserve for aging. But this going through a sullen stage following the early March bottling. WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard (planted in 1953) is a rich, full-bodied beauty that seems more developed and evolved than previous examples of this cuvee. WS 90 (4/2015): Deep and jammy, with black cherry and cracked pepper aromas and briary but soft dark plum and smoky beef flavors. Drink now through 2020. 700 cases made. |
