VM 92 (1/2016): Vivid purple. Heady, spice-tinged aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and roasted coffee, joined by a floral nuance. The smoky, focused palate offers intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors, bracing tangy acidity and bright minerality. Closes with excellent clarity and persistence, leaving floral pastille and cherry pit notes behind. (Drink between 2018-2024). Josh Raynolds. WA 91 (6/2016): Next to the 2013 I also tasted the 2012 Clio, from a warmer, riper year, but an extra year in bottle had rendered the tannins and integrated the oak aromas and it shows more drinkable right now. The blend is constant across vintages. Mostly Monastrell with some 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the production method is also quite stable, fermentation in stainless steel and the wine transferred to barriques before the end of fermentation, where it goes through malolactic and a period of some 23 months before it is bottled. The palate shows some dusty tannins, as if the wine had extracted more from the oak and the tannins felt a bit dry. |

VM 95 (9/2007): Inky ruby. Dense red and dark berry liqueur aromas are energized by zesty mineral and fresh floral qualities. Precise and suave, offering sweet red berry flavors and sexy oak spice character that's in no way ostentatious. I find the restraint of this wine to be utterly compelling, as is the balance of power and finesse on the long, spicy finish. An exotic floral pastille quality simply doesn't let up. Josh Raynolds. |

VM 93 (2/2012): Pure bouquet of honeydew melon, magnolia and sweet lime. The velvety sweet papaya fruit and salty acidity give this wine an exotic kick. Pure, well-balanced riesling with a lively, elegant finish. This is a spatlese direct from the handbook. Joel B. Payne. |

WS 97 (7/2004): Solid and superfruity. Ultraclean, with blackberries, raspberries and licorice character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Focused and silky. Very refined indeed. One of the best Cannubis ever from here. Best after 2009. 900 cases made. VM 93+ (12/2004): Saturated deep red. Less expressive on the nose than Le Vigne, hinting at blackberry, flowers and smoky oak. Suave on entry, then quite closed in the middle palate; less obviously lush and sweet than Le Vigne but more gripping. Then very strong on the back end, building impressively and demonstrating a serious tannic structure that transcends the vintage. Built to age. WA 93 (4/2007): The 2000 is characteristic of the vintage, with a huge nose of over-ripe, almost stewed fruits. It is richer, rounder and softer than either the 1999 or 2001, displaying generous amounts of sweet, dark fruit with a lingering balsamic note on the finish. This doesn’t quite have the freshness or complexity of the very best vintages, but it will offer irresistible drinking today and for at least another 15 years. |

VM 96 (4/2012): Luciano Sandrone's 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. The ability to blend fruit from several parcels, an approach rarely used today, has plenty of merits. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 93+ (12/2017): Luminous bright straw yellow. Complex, deep aromas of tangerine, yellow stone fruit, and chamomile are complicated by a honeyed nuance. Rich, dense and yet light on its feet, this classic Miani white has a refined texture and a long piercing finish. This is a rare Ribolla Gialla in which about 10% of the grapes were hit by noble rot. The presence of botrytis really adds to the wine’s complexity. Memorable stuff that’s good to drink already but I’d actually cellar this for a few years, if you can defer gratification. (Drink between 2019-2027). Ian D'Agata. |

JS 94 (2/2013): Dark chocolate with plums and hints of mahogany on the nose. Full body, with soft tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Refined and delicious. Structured for the vintage. Drink or hold. WA 93 (6/2013): A complex mix of savory herbs, plums black cherries, leather and sweet spices emerges from the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. Beautifully layered from start to the finish, the 2008 impresses for its exceptional balance and finesse. Its mid-weight style will likely come as a surprise to Valdicava fans, but all the elements come together in the glass. Proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese describes 2008 as a solid vintage across the board, but without the peaks of quality that would have allowed him to make the flagship Madonna del Piano. Instead. Abbruzzese bottled just one Brunelli, and it is fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. WS 91 (6/2013): Candied cherry and berry notes are framed by sweet, spicy oak in this perfumed red. There are firm tannins underneath, but the lasting impression is of sweet fruit. Round and long on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032. |

WA 93 (1/2009): The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a super-ripe, opulent wine that resembles the 1997 in its generous, full-bodied personality. The tannins are surprisingly well-balanced within the context of this challenging vintage. The 2003 should drink well relatively early for this Riserva. All things considered, this is a superb effort. Production was down sharply in 2003. The estate bottled just 13,000 bottles of this wine compared to the typical production of 23,000 bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. |
