| VM 87 (5/2019): The 2011 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has quite a high-toned bouquet, a little feisty compared to recent vintages and maybe with a slight touch of brettanomyces? The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gamey red fruit with a touch of brown spice and garrigues towards the finish that just needs a little more structure and freshness. | BH 92 (4/2008): A reserved, even restrained nose that is elegant, pure and ripe as well as still 100% primary with its spicy black fruit aromas that complement perfectly the rich, full and naturally sweet medium weight plus flavors blessed with solid dry extract levels, all wrapped in a vibrant finish blessed with subtle minerality and impeccable balance. I really like the definition here and while a touch of backend wood remains, it does not compromise the overall sense of equilibrium. This is built to age and should easily last for 30 years. Drink 2017+. |

The 2012 La Grande Rue Grand Cru from Lamarche has a fabulous bouquet that gently unfurls in the glass: fine mineralite and tension, wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tensile tannin, crisp and poised, tightly wound and certainly needing several years to really show its mettle, but a great wine that is both understated yet intense. I'll be cautious now, but I would not be surprised to see this gain more favourable reviews in the future.

There is fine concentration, power and punch to the refined and classy middle weight flavors that possess excellent intensity on the balanced, mouth coating, velvety and beautifully persistent finish. This too will need at least a decade plus of bottle age. Drink 2027+. |

WA 97 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a backward and broody bouquet, very complex with hints of woodland, damp earth and fern filtering through the tightly wound red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and very fine, almost filigree tannins. The acidity is beautifully judged here -- very focused and refined, seamless towards the sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Grand Rue that I have tasted, which is a considerable achievement given that this was not an exemplary growing season.
WS 93 (7/2016): Pure, boasting cherry, raspberry, spice and mineral aromas and flavors. Features a dense structure, ending with a chalky feel. Shows excellent length and balance. Best from 2018 through 2032. 500 cases made. |

BH 95 (1/2017): Here there is less wood in evidence but also noticeably better complexity to the exceptionally spicy nose of plum, earth, Asian-style tea and pronounced floral scents. This is really quite refined as the caressing mid-palate is pure silk which contributes significantly to the sense of elegance of the medium weight flavors that are blessed with very fine concentration as well as plenty of palate coating dry extract on the markedly firm but not hard finale. This impeccably well-balanced effort should amply reward extended cellaring. Drink 2029+.
WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet similar to the Grands Echezeaux, though at the moment albeit without the same degree of complexity. Perhaps this is just more backward at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, nicely structured, perhaps just a little more conservative than the Grands Echezeaux, but maybe that means it will offer more once in bottle. One has the sense of a La Grande Rue just biding its time. Hopefully one day I will find out its qualities once in bottle. |

| BH 93 (1/2013): A restrained and discreetly spiced nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that precede the broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors that evidence a sleek muscularity on the long and quite punchy finish. Like any number of prior wines, the flavors and finish are underpinned by extremely fine-grained but dense tannins and while this remains a powerful wine, it is relatively sophisticated by the typical standards of Malconsorts. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |
