BH 91-93 (1/2005): This is more of everything here including aromatic complexity, size, weight, muscle and sheer depth. The aromas here are truly remarkable with raspberry and ripe black berry notes complemented by spicy plum and a smoky perfume that is akin to musk. The rich, intense and full-bodied flavors are relatively supple yet wrapped in dense but fine tannins buffered by superb mid-palate sap. This is hugely long with a powerful and quite chewy finish. This should age for 25 to 30 years, perhaps longer as the balance is spot on. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! VM 90-94 (4/2005): Good deep bright red. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, coffee, mocha and sexy oak. Then less exotic than usual for this wine at this early stage of its evolution: saline and savory, with notes of underbrush but not the normal India n spices. Perhaps a bit youthfully tight today. Quite restrained in its sweetness and not yet showing much complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and very good length. WA 93 (8/2005): Loads of spices are intermingled with blackberries and black cherries in the wonderful aromatics of the 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. A bold, ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate, revealing great breadth and richness. Hugely spicy, this candied blackberry-dominated effort sports a persistent finish crammed with solid tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. |

WS 96 (7/2010): Though compact now, this is full of sweet black cherry, black currant, licorice and mineral aromas and flavors. There's a harmonious feeling overall, with dense, well-integrated tannins and bright acidity, followed by a fine, lingering aftertaste. Best from 2014 through 2032. 27 cases imported. BH 92 (1/2009): ( from yields of only 17 hl/ha in 2006.) This departs from its normal expressiveness by being much more restrained and if not backward, then at least relatively reticent on the spicy red berry fruit nose that quietly introduces very concentrated, brooding, superbly powerful and equally well focused flavors underpinned by very firm tannins and plenty of underlying tension as you can really sense the energy here on the youthfully austere and ever so slightly dry finish that doesn't have the same phenolic ripeness level as the Chambertin. It's interesting because this is so cool and backward that in 2006, it's more Chambertin than Bèze. Drink 2018+. |

WA 91-93 (5/2011): The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin emerges from the glass with lovely radiance and openness in its ripe, juicy fruit. The Charmes is already rather forward, and at this stage appears to be a relatively early-maturing wine. The oak is also a bit pronounced. Sweet, textured floral notes wrap around the long, polished finish. Rousseau’s Charmes is technically 60% Mazoyeres. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. BH 89-92 (1/2011): A high-toned and fresh nose of wild raspberries, cranberries and warm earth aromas gives way to round, supple and unusually sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that possess lovely detail on the persistent finish. This is actually less complex than the Cazetiers though it might catch up in time. Drink: 2019+. VM 87-90 (2/2011): Medium red. High-toned aromas of cherry and rose petal. Very sweet and ripe but not quite fat, conveying a distinct impression of surmaturite Seems higher in volatile acidity than the foregoing samples, with the warmth of the vintage currently overshadowing the terroir Rousseau told me he always picks these vines second, following the Gevrey villages. |

VM 91 (3/2014): Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. BH 89-92 (1/2013): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish. Drink 2019+. VM 89-92 (1/2013): (two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey. WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and plenty of tertiary fruit, foursquare and a little austere on the saline, angular finish that does improve in the glass. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back. |

BH 90-93 (1/2010): A surprisingly high-toned nose of cranberry and raspberry trimmed in a bit of warm earth introduces very forward yet precise flavors that are quite round and supple yet deliver excellent authority and impressive depth on the balanced and lingering finish. This is not a big example or even especially muscular but it's harmonious and should age well. Drink 2018+. VM 90+ (4/2011): Pale-medium red. Musky cherry, fresh herbs, brown spices and menthol on the nose and palate; more primary than the Mazy-Chambertin. Then sweeter and larger-scaled but backward today and showing a medicinal austerity. I like this wine's intensity of flavor and palate presence. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins that spread out to saturate the palate and leave the taste buds vibrating. WA 89-90 (6/2010): New leather, black tea, and bright cherry and plum scent Rousseau’s 2008 Clos de La Roche, which comes to the palate bright and with tart chew of fruit skins and smokiness of black tea serving for invigoration in a finish of impressive persistence. Less exuberant and multi-faceted today than the corresponding Mazy, this also displays more aggressive - faintly gum-numbing - tannins than the several wines that preceded it in the present line-up. |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be. BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

VM 92 (9/2020): The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin from Armand Rousseau showcased the beauty of this true Burgundy lover’s vintage. It offered crisp, delineated raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with sous-bois. The palate displayed exquisite balance, obviously endowed with less concentration than the equivalent 2015 or 2016, yet nimble and lithe, and so precise and detailed on its carefree finish that you could easily misconstrue this as a premier cru. Wonderful. Neal Martin. |

BH 89-92 (1/2020): A similar if slightly fresher nose offers notes of various red berries along with newly turn earth and sauvage nuances. This is an excellent Gevrey villages and worth checking out. |

BH 92 (3/2019): Fresh and still youthful aromas are composed by notes of cool essence of red berries, earth, spice and a whiff of wood character. The round, supple and relatively forward middle weight flavors evidence plenty of minerality on the focused and sneaky long finish that tightens up noticeably as it sits on the palate. This well-made and utterly delicious effort isn't seductive but I like the delivery and balance and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I would continue to hold it for up to another decade. Try from 2025+. |

BH 94 (1/2014): (from a 2.2 ha parcel raised in 70% new wood). Discreet wood sets off ultra-fresh and airy aromas of red currant, blue berries and plum that are trimmed in hints of wet stone and earth. There is a wonderfully refined mouth feel to the mineral-tinged middle weight flavors that possess an appealing verve along with superb detail on the harmonious and exceptionally persistent finish. This very firm effort is textbook Clos St, Jacques. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! VM 93+ (4/2014): Good full red. Spicy red berries, cherry, licorice and a hint of horseradish on the nose. Juicy, brisk and taut; not hugely fleshy but energetic and penetrating. Conveys an impression of density without weight in the manner of the best 2011s. Tightly wound and very backward, finishing with terrific spicy persistence. Eric Rousseau bottled his 2011s in April of 2013; his bottles now have the domain name embossed on the bottom of the glass. WA 91 (8/2013): The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques was raised in 70% new oak. It has a ripe floral bouquet with red cherries, a touch of creme de cassis and violets once again all wrapped up in that nicely assimilated. Oak The palate is crisp and forward on the entry. This is not the most complex Clos Saint Jacques that I have tasted at this stage, but it is nicely focused with a precise, animated finish. It needs to show a little more character and personality within a couple of years. |

BH 96 (1/2018): There is just enough wood present to mention but not so much as to materially detract from the attractively fresh, cool, pretty and airy red berry, earth, humus, anise and rose petal-scented aromas. The refined yet quite powerful middle weight are almost painfully intense and there is so much minerality the mouthfeel is akin to rolling small stones around in your mouth particularly so on the sappy, palate coating and hugely long finish. This too is seriously impressive and very classy. (Drink starting 2032). |

BH 93 (11/2005): The phenomenal aromatic complexity displayed by this wine from cask is still present with relatively tight but not hard frank, direct and robust flavors that have plenty of buffering fat and superb length. As I noted in my original tasting note, this will not compete for the longest lived Rousseau Chambertin yet it is packed, powerful and beautifully complex and is an Outstanding wine in any context but particularly so for the vintage. Because there is so much fat, this can be enjoyed now but will clearly offer more fireworks in the future so I would be inclined to let this baby rest for at least another 5 years and longer if you can keep your hands off of it. Drink: Try from 2012+ VM 92+ (4/2003): Good medium red. Cooler, more aristocratic nose than the Clos de Beze: blackberry, violet, minerals. Supple and suave but quite pure and sharply focused, with a degree of precision rare for the vintage. Finishes with terrific grip. Like the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Beze, this may well ultimately merit a higher score. |

WS 95 (4/2010): This muscular red shows macerated cherry and plum flavors, with leather, tobacco and a wild, feral character. Smooth and concentrated, with a long finish of sweet fruit and mineral. A chewy version. Best from 2014 through 2030. 45 cases imported. VM 94+ (4/2010): Good full red-ruby. More reserved on the nose than the Beze, with terrific sappy verve to its aromas of dark fruits, violet, crushed stone, iron and camphor. Juicy, tightly wound and very intense on first pour, but opened spectacularly in the glass to show Outstanding creamy depth without any loss of energy. Today the wine's saline earth tones and minerality have the upper hand over its fruit. There's less easy sweetness here than the Clos de Beze is displaying, but the slow ripening of the vintage is apparent, and the finishing flavors go on and on. It would be a rare (and expensive) treat to try these two wines side by side in 2020 or so. BH 94 (1/2010): By contrast to the Clos St. Jacques and the Bèze, the Cham has already eaten its wood which allows free rein for the spicy, pure, elegant and restrained earthy red pinot fruit with animale hints and ample mineral notes to dissolve seamlessly into dusty, textured, precise and palate staining big-bodied flavors that are exceptionally tight on the linear but hugely long finish. At present, the Bèze appears to have slightly better underlying material but we'll see in time as both are sensational plus the Cham has a long demonstrated ability to add weight in bottle. Drink 2019+. |

BH 98 (1/2012): This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine. Drink 2029+. |

VM 97 (3/2016): Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon. Stephen Tanzer. BH 96 (1/2016): Once again subtle reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background so I recommended decanting it for those of you who can't wait at least 5 years to try a bottle. There is even more size, weight and intensity to the velvety, powerful and opulent big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of palate soaking dry extract that pushes the otherwise tightly coiled tannins to the background on the massively long coffee-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is very firmly structured but actually a bit less austere than it usually is and thanks to the abundant dry extract might be approachable a bit sooner than usual too. In short, this brilliant effort is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage. Drink 2035+. |

BH 98 (1/2018): (100% new wood.) Here too there is just enough oak to mention but once again it's not really enough to impair the purity of the distinctly cool and ultra-spicy red currant, underbrush, sandalwood, lilac and plenty of earth aromas. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a similar level of minerality that is borderline pungent and it informs the explosively long, firm and very serious finish. This notably powerful, but not really austere effort, displays magnificent potential and if it develops its usual degree of complexity over time it should merit the upper end of my projected range. But as structured and firm as it is, I suspect that this will drink well after only 6 to 8 years of age thanks to the incredible abundance of dry extract. Drink 2037+. VM 97-99 (1/2017): (12.8% natural alcohol chaptalized to 13.2%; Rousseau presented this wine before his Clos de Bèze because he finds the latter wine much more oaky in the early going): Dark, bright red with ruby highlights. Crushed black cherry, raspberry and spice aromas are lifted by a pungent floral topnote--"very ripe for this wine," notes Rousseau. At once utterly young and almost exotic, conveying extraordinary intensity and layered texture to its slightly high-toned flavors of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, licorice and spices. An element of menthol reserve contributes to the wine's impression of brooding energy. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and slowly mounting, explosive palate-staining length. Almost painful and almost perfect. Stephen Tanzer. WA 97-99 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru took a while to open in the glass, as it is prone towards. It has a very elegant bouquet once again, the fruit an equal mixture of red and black, a touch of cold flint in the background accompanied by blood orange and satsuma that emerge with time. The palate is blessed with beguiling symmetry and power, counterpoised by the killer line of acidity, leading to a mineral-rich finish that goes on forever. This is another Outstanding Chambertin from Rousseau that wine lovers will doubtlessly be fighting over for years to come. And you know what? I wouldn't blame them. |

BH 97 (1/2020): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2037+. WA 96-98 (1/2019): The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. VM 96-98 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has an extraordinarily detailed and intense bouquet with a cornucopia of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, cranberry and stony aromas, the latter becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive body and depth. It is beautifully balanced with svelte tannin, velvety smooth with ample red fruit and spicy finish that lingers for 60 seconds in the mouth. Noble and aristocratic - just as Chambertin ought to be. Neal Martin. |

BH 97 (1/2021): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) There is barely enough wood to mention on the wonderfully fresh and airy aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, earth and a hint of the sauvage. The seductively textured yet well-delineated big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of energy on the intensely mineral-inflected, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finale that reflects a touch of youthful austerity. The sheer level of complexity is stunning, and this knockout of a Chambertin should age for a very, very long time yet it's not so backward and it couldn't be approached after a decade or so of aging. BH 99 (1/2022): A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially. Drink 2050+. |

BH 94-96 (1/2023): Intricately layered aromas of spice, earth, dark berries, underbrush, dried floral hints and leather are trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and punch, particularly on the intensely mineral-inflected, youthfully austere, serious and amazingly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. In particular, the complexity is already remarkable, and this beautifully balanced effort should amply repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink 2038+. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat’s example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible – full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2012 Mazy-Chambertin is intensely perfumed and sensual. This is typical Mazy. High-toned aromatics and bright red fruits abound in a pretty, sophisticated Burgundy. Vibrant saline notes linger on the finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): (from Mazis-Bas) There is enough reduction present to hide the underlying fruit though it does appear to be quite ripe. There is excellent punch and power to the big-bodied, intense and muscular flavors that brim with palate coating and tannin buffering dry extract on the pungently mineral-driven and beautifully long finish. This is very Mazis in character yet it's not especially rustic. Drink 2024+. |

VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 10% new oak, but most of the rest of the wine was racked into very young barrels in June): Healthy medium red. Sexy oak notes of coffee, mocha and spices complement dark cherry, berries, red licorice and wild herbs on the nose. Juicy and perfumed in the mouth, conveying an enticing hint of sweetness to the tangy black raspberry, spice, licorice and saline flavors. Finishes with firm, fine-grained tannins and noteworthy aromatic persistence, as well as a touch of roundness from the bit of new oak used for the first time for this cuvee. Previously, this wine has typically been more austere at this stage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 94 (1/2008): A more deeply pitched and very cool nose offers up very ripe dark berry fruit, truffles, spice hints and a touch of the sauvage, the latter of which can also be found on the rich, full and sweet medium weight plus flavors that deliver fine punch and precision on the delineated and exceptionally pure mineral infused finish. While always a fine wine in the Rousseau stable, 2005 is one of the best vintages that I have seen and it will age well. Drink 2017+. |

BH 94 (1/2015): This is beautifully elegant with its airy and cool yet markedly ripe nose of lavender, black raspberry, truffle and spiced plum scents. The sleek, well-delineated, intense and mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in an attractively vibrant, harmonious and strikingly persistent finale. Lovely stuff that should age brilliantly well. Drink 2024+. WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru comes from the domain’s monopole: populated by one-third vines aged around 30-years and the remainder around 65-years old (see December issue for more details.) This year it sees 20% new oak. It has wonderful delineation on the nose with heightened mineralite from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening. There is a wave of pure, clinically defined fresh raspberry and wild strawberry notes that dovetails into quite a stern, very linear finish. This is uncompromising at the moment, an aloof yet compelling Ruchottes-Chambertin that does not quite possess the completeness of say, Mugneret-Gibourg’s, but clearly as the substance to age extremely well. VM 93 (3/2015): Bright medium red. Superripe aromas of black and purple fruits, violet and licorice, complicated by leather and game nuances. Highly concentrated, very ripe and palate-staining, with the black fruit and menthol flavors lifted by a note of violet. Finishes with a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness and Outstanding breadth. Perhaps not as classy as its 2013 sibling but surprisingly easy to taste today. |

WS 97 (11/2019): Alluring, saturated flavors of pure cherry, currant and wild strawberry are at the core of this juicy red. As this evolves on the palate, licorice and spice notes emerge and vibrant acidity kicks in. Beautifully balanced, showing terrific energy and a long aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2024 through 2045. 76 cases imported. WA 96-98 (12/2017): The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru, which Cyrille described as her “heart wine,” has a superb bouquet with ebullient dark cherries, bergamot, blackberry and briary, wonderful delineation and demonstrating more exuberance than Mugneret-Gibourg (which as affected by frost, whereas Rousseau was not). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, shimmering red fruit, outstanding mineralite and a subtle crescendo toward the pixilated finish. Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt. BH 94 (1/2019): A highly appealing freshness to the elegant aromas of red and dark berries that are at once intensely earthy and spicy. In the same fashion, there is a lovely sense of verve and freshness to the markedly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate delineation on the sleek, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is really quite classy and has already developed impressive depth. While this clearly has the intrinsic stuffing to reward extended cellaring, 5-ish years or so should be sufficient in order to enjoy this beauty if youthful fruit is your preference. Drink 2036+. |

BH 94 (1/2021): (1.06 ha; 20% new wood.) An absolutely gorgeous nose reflects cool and pure aromas of the essence of red berry liqueur, spice and soft floral scents. The lilting and mineral-driven middle weight flavors retain excellent delineation and a sophisticated mouthfeel while the sneaky long if decidedly firm finish possesses outstanding complexity. This powerful yet sophisticated and refined Zen-like effort is exceptionally promising. Drink 2036+. |
