WA 95 (7/2020): Showing Enrico Scavino's signature at the bottom of the label, this is a classic expression of Barolo. The Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo offers impeccable balance and an all-pleasing approach. There is something for everyone, especially die-hard Nebbiolo lovers, with energy, power, aromatic finesse and elegant tannins. Fruit for this wine is sourced from a half-dozen vineyard sites from across the appellation, so you get some of the power of Serralunga d'Alba and the precision of Castiglione Falletto. The scope of this wine is wide and broad, offering sweeping panoramic views of this unique grape from Piedmont. This is a terrific value. VM 89 (2/2020): The 2016 Barolo is supple, forward and easy to like. Sweet macerated cherry, mint, cinnamon and orange peel are nicely pushed forward in this racy, beautifully open-knit Barolo from the Scavino family. Drink it over the next handful of years. The 2016 is just lovely, and a real pleasure to drink. (Drink between 2021-2028). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (12/2007): The estate's 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another awesome wine. Initially linear on entry, it explodes on the palate with a compelling array of dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice, new leather, plums and baking spices. Although Bric del Fiasc is typically a wine that relies on power, the 2004 is notably refined and elegant, with sweet silky tannins that support the fruit from start to finish. Simply put, this is a remarkable wine from Enrico Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. VM 94+ (12/2007): Good deep red. Superripe aromas and flavors of plum liqueur, redcurrant, mocha and chocolate. Sweet, pliant and downright plush; a hugely concentrated, dense wine that saturates every nook and cranny of the palate. Wonderfully shapely, structured wine that finishes with superb grip and length and a captivating juicy quality. A great vintage for this bottling. |

WA 95 (2/2010): The 2006 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a dramatic, sweeping wine that bursts onto the palate in a powerful expression of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard. Dark red fruits, smoke and grilled herbs are just some of the nuances that come to life as this imposing, focused Barolo opens up in the glass. Today, the wine is a touch austere, but in a few years the structure should fill out nicely. It is impossible to ignore the sheer pedigree and class here. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. VM 94 (12/2009): Dark red. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, licorice and menthol; lovely modern-style Barolo. Sweet and lush in the mouth, with a firm spine of acidity serving to frame and intensify the sweet, juicy dark fruit flavors. Still a baby but already beautifully detailed. Very long on the aftertaste, with the tannins melting into the fruit. JS 93 (1/2011): I'm loving the layers to this wine. Tons of dried mushrooms, flowers, and berries. Full bodied and chewy. This is a massive wine. Start cracking these open in 2014. |

WA 96 (2/2011): Smoke, tar, freshly cut flowers, new leather and licorice are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from the 2007 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. The 2007 is an opulent, explosive Bric del Fiasc that flows with marvelous density, richness and power. The wine captures all of the best qualities of the year in a remarkably open, harmonious style that is sure to find many admirers. The balance of fruit, aromatics and structure is first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. JS 95 (5/2011): Wild dark fruits here on the nose with raspberries and blueberries. Fresh flowers like lilacs. Full bodied, with chewy tannins and loads of fruit. Very back ended, with a big finish. Give this a few years to come together. Best after 2014. VM 91+ (10/2011): Good full, deep red. Brooding, medicinal nose shows less floral lift than the Cannubi but very good ripeness. Big and rich but with a subdued sweetness today; a bit lower-toned than the Cannubi. This very backward wine will need a long time in bottle to resolve its major load of tannins. |

VM 95 (1/2014): Dark red fruit, iron, smoke, incense and orange peel are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2010 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. A deep, fleshy Barolo, the Bric del Fiasc is incredibly polished and refined, with perhaps a bit less power than previous vintages, but more in the way of finesse. At this stage, the Bric del Fiasc comes across as not fully formed. It will be interesting to see what the next year brings. JS 95 (3/2014): Fabulous aromas of black fruits and shitake mushrooms with hints of bark. Full body, with wonderful firm tannins that are polished and refined. Needs at least three or four years of bottle age. VM 94+ (12/2013): Good full red. Knockout ineffable nose combines red berries, smoke, pepper and herbs. Pure silk on entry, then rather compact and closed in the middle despite its serious density and underlying richness. Most impressive today on the savory, echoing back end, where the tannins are buffered by red fruits and smoke. This wonderfully supple, full, youthfully medicinal wine needs time in bottle to express itself. |

JS 96 (4/2019): The redcurrant-compote character really pops out here, before dried cranberries, licorice and spice box all come to the fore. Tannic and very expansive, sweeping through a whole array of red berries via linear acidity and wrapping itself up in a long finish. Drink from 2023. WA 95+ (6/2019): From the Scavino family’s home-turf vineyard, the 2015 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) delivers structure, firmness and power. This is a classic interpretation of a historic cru, and the wine offers linear, crisp lines. Fruit from this site was fermented separately for the first time to make this wine in 1978. The family had long recognized the consistently superior quality of the fruit from this location, and they saw its special potential. Enrico Scavino told me about the rush of adrenaline and pride that washed over him when he first tasted this wine with his peers Gaja and Conterno during those Golden Years of the past and saw the enthusiasm their eyes. This is the go-to Barolo if you want to taste classic Scavino. VM 95 (11/2019): The 2015 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is dark and imposing on the palate, yet not quite as forbidding as it can be. A Barolo of size and heft, the 2015 has a lot to say, but it won't be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, smoke, leather, iron, licorice, menthol and graphite notes infuse the 2015 with layers of nuance to complement its brooding, sepia-toned personality nicely. The 2015 is a beguiling Barolo, but it needs cellaring. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 97+ (9/2014): Scavino's 2008 Barolo Riserva Bric del Fiasc is just as magnificent as it has always been. Pine, wild flowers, mint, spices and dark red stone fruits form a fabric of breathtaking nuance as this precise, polished Barolo shows off its considerable personality. This is one of the most aromatically expressive, lifted Barolos I have ever tasted from Bricco Fiasco, where the wines tend to be bruisers. Scavino's 2008 Riserva, on the other hand, is pure class. Antonio Galloni. WA 95-97 (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo Riserva Bric del Fiasc is a huge, huge wine. |

WA 94 (7/2020): From the comune or village of Roddi, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio offers an open-knit and accessible personality. The bouquet of this wine is very distinctive, offering some cedar, spice and toasted hazelnut that you don't get in the other Baroli in the collection from the Scavino family. Those nutty aromas cede to dark fruit, plum, spice and grilled herb. The wine is beautifully put together, showing the classic balance and energy of the vintage. VM 94 (2/2020): The 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is very pretty in 2016. Medium in body and supple, the Bricco Ambrogio captures all of the personality of the year in a mid-weight style that makes it easy to drink and enjoy young. The balance of fruit, acid and structure is just superb here. Pretty floral and spice overtones add nuance. Bricco Ambrogio is always the most accessible of the Scavino cru Barolos. The 2016 is the finest wine from this site yet. (Drink between 2022-2036). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Carobric is in a great place today where it is starting to show the first signs of aromatic complexity, yet it also clearly has plenty of upside for the future. Firm yet nicely integrated tannins give the 2004 much of its energy. Sweet tobacco, plums, underbrush, cherries and melted road tar linger on the multi-faceted finish. Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. Antonio Galloni. WA 94 (12/2007): Scavino’s 2004 Barolo Carobric comes across as classic in its expression of violets, black cherries, minerals and sweet toasted oak. It too offers gorgeous inner sweetness to its fruit, but it is more focused and less concentrated than the other 2004 Barolos. This is a beautifully proportioned, vibrant Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. Carobric is made from a blend of Rocche di Castiglione, Bric del Fiasc and Cannubi This bottling has often suffered an identity crisis among the single-vineyard wines in the lineup but in recent years its personality has gradually begun to show its potential. The 2004 is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. |
