WS 100 (10/2007): Beautiful, subtle aromas of berries, cappuccino and black olive are amazing. Full-bodied, with ultrarefined tannins and a long, long finish. Goes on for minutes. Leaves me speechless. This is soulful. A Tuscan cult wine you don't want to miss. Merlot. Best after 2012. WA 96 (6/2008): The 2004 Messorio is clearly the most complete of these 2004s. It is a remarkably elegant Messorio endowed with a seamless, layered personality that exudes generous dark plums, prunes, mint, licorice, smoke, chocolate and toasted oak. Despite its considerable appeal, it is a powerful, structured wine with a significant tannic backbone that will require patience. It shows well-integrated tannins, superb balance, and a seductive, inviting personality that is absolutely irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2022. VM 92 (8/2007): Dark ruby. Refined aromas of blackcurrant, coffee liqueur and cassis are complicated by minty and herbal notes, but this also exhibits (like the Paleo) some rather obvious coconut. Beautifully suave on the palate and lighter in style than other famous Italian merlots, this exhibits compelling flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, and almost garrigue-like spices. Finishes smoothly tannic, very long and complex, with a distinct touch of mint and a hint of alcoholic warmth. |

WA 97 (3/2011): The 2006 is simply a flat-out great Messorio. Today it is the wine’s density and structure that are most evident, but with time in the glass the inner perfume, minerality and sheer pedigree begin to emerge. This is a vintage that combines elements of sumptuous ripeness and structure to a degree that is highly unusual for Bolgheri. As such, the 2006 Messorio is best left alone for perhaps as long as another decade. When the wine finally emerges it will be spectacular. Hints of new leather, licorice and crushed rocks linger on the refined, classy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2031. VM 96 (10/2010): (100% merlot; 14% alcohol) Fully saturated deep ruby. Knockout nose reads like a textbook on world-class merlot from a warm site: ripe blackberry, blueberry, coffee, cocoa, violet and minerals. The palate delivers utterly pure, mesmerizingly deep flavors of cassis, delicate smoky plum and minerals. Wonderful balancing acidity keeps the ripe fruit dancing on your taste buds and extends the flavors on the long, creamy finish. This is probably the best young Messorio I have ever tasted, and my score might even be a little stingy. Like all recent vintages of Messorio, it did a complete turnaround a couple years after the vintage: six months ago it was wildly better than it was upon release, and now it's even finer. Time will tell if this beauty will ultimately outperform the great 2001; I'm betting it will. WS 96 (10/2009): Fresh herb and black olive aromas evolve into dark fruits and flowers. This is full-bodied, with chewy, polished tannins and lots of new wood, but there's plenty of fruit underneath. Opulent and powerful, verging on blockbuster. An extreme style of Merlot. Best after 2014. 670 cases made. |

WA 96 (10/2010): The 2007 Messorio is another standout. A super-ripe expression of fruit is balanced with considerable structure, delicacy and finesse, with scents of mocha, graphite, French oak, licorice and new leather that emerge over time. Over the last few months the Messorio has absorbed its oak beautifully. The finish is long, nuanced and utterly impeccable. That said, this remains an intense, towering wine in need of a long slumber. The 2007 isn’t one of the more massive Messorios, instead it is a wine built on elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. JS 94 (4/2011): This shows aromas of dried mushrooms and blackberries. Then turns to spices and blackberries. Some fresh herbs too. Complex. Full body, with super silky tannins and a lovely mineral, berry and spice aftertaste. Subtle and enticing. Better in a couple of years. Gorgeous pure Merlot. WS 93 (10/2010): A soft and decadent wine that makes you want to drink it. Full and velvety, with chocolate and subtle vanilla character interspersed with meat and berry notes. Pure Merlot. Best after 2012. 835 cases made. VM 92 (10/2010): (100% merlot; 14% alcohol) Deep red. Fresh blackberry and dark cherry aromas are complemented by fresh mint, coffee, smoke and black pepper. Dense but suave, with sweet black cherry and dark chocolate flavors nicely framed by supple tannins and brightened by harmonious acidity. Finishes fresh and focused, with lingering dark cherry and mint notes and an obvious coconut nuance. This is a slightly sweeter, less herbal and less wild style of Messorio than usual, and an excellent example of the higher-alcohol, riper style of merlot typical of the Tuscan coast. |

VM 97 (8/2011): The 2008 Messorio is simply marvelous in this vintage. Layers of dark fruit take shape beautifully in the glass as this reticent Messorio shows off its pedigree. The 2008 is a decidedly inward wine that, once again, stands apart from some recent vintages. The 2008 is a mid-weight, refined Messorio endowed with tons of balance and sheer finesse. It will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. The 2008 Messorio was aged for 14 months in the standard French oak barrique (75% new), a move away from the smaller barrels that had been used in past years. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 97 (3/2020): With the 2016 Messorio, Le Macchiole moves from a wine of unctuous power to one of total refinement. Aromatic, translucent and striking in its nuance, the 2016 is flat out stunning. The flavors are fresh, vibrant and beautifully delineated. More than anything else, through the 2016 shows the present-day Macchiole style off to great effect. Another year in bottle has done wonders for the Messorio, which is even more arresting in its beauty today than it was last year. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95+ (1/2021): The 2017 Messorio (100% Merlot) is classy and polished to the core. It is also incredibly young and not at all forthcoming. Messorio is a wine that needs a surprising amount of time in bottle to truly shine. I expect that will be the case here as well. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit and density. Time in the cellar should allow for its aromatics to emerge more fully. Overall, though, this is a fairly restrained style, in keeping with the showing of 2017 Bolgheri reds more broadly. All the elements come together so gracefully in this striking wine. Production is down around 20%. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (2/2021): The 2018 Messorio is an attractive wine, but it also feels like the most marked by the cooler style of the year. Readers will find a mid-weight Messorio endowed with striking inner sweetness and perfume, if not quite the textural richness that is the norm here. I have seen even the more delicate of Messorios blossom beautifully over time, and suspect that will be the case here as well. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (10/2010): The 2007 Paleo Rosso (Cabernet Franc) offers up compelling, nuanced layers of smoke, dark cherries, mocha and grilled herbs in a style that reveals considerable richness and opulence but also quite a bit of verve, minerality and sheer structure. The wine has begun to shut down considerably since it was bottled and will require quite a bit of patience. Still, it is impossible to miss the silkiness of the tannins, the impeccable purity of the finish and the wine's exceptional overall sense of harmony. This brilliant effort will be a joy to follow over the coming years. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 97 (8/2011): Best Paleo ever here. Incredible concentration of fruit, yet racy and balanced. The palate is crazy. It's like chocolate olive oil cake. Beautiful fruit, with dark berries, olive leaf and chocolate. Love the texture. The best pure Cabernet Franc on earth? Can't wait to drink it. Better in 2014. |

VM 96 (2/2021): Le Macchiole's 2018 Paleo Rosso is an unbelievably beautiful wine. It is also very young. The aromatics are total seduction, but otherwise the 2018 is quite reticent. Bright floral notes and red-toned fruit give the 2018 considerable energy and verve as varietal Franc aromas and flavors start to take shape over time. Readers will have to be patient. The 2018 needs at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Even so, it is pretty appealing today. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97 (1/2023): The 2020 Paleo offers up more concentration of color with a hint of purple. Aromatically, this moves into some black fruit as well as red fruits of boysenberry, violets, pencil shavings, and cedar. Full and round, with ripe tannin and a round mouthfeel, it offers iron-rich earth, mixed berries, and a floral finish. It feels sunny and warming without being baked and is a more generous wine to drink 2024-2044. Audrey Frick. VM 97 (8/2023): The 2020 Paleo Rosso is classy, elegant and wonderfully polished. Crushed flowers, spice and blood orange lend brightness. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, Paleo Rosso offers tons of depth. Historically it has aged quite well. I expect that will be the case here also, as the 2020 exudes balance from start to finish. The 2020 spent 18 months in 100% French oak, with 5% of the wine aged in amphora. Antonio Galloni. |
