VM 95 (1/2025): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is vividly fresh and pure, with a gorgeous bouquet of black cherries, incense, sage and a whiff of spearmint. It impresses with its purity, soft textures and vibrantly ripe red berry fruits, guided by zesty acidity and underscored by saline minerals and nuances of spice. The slightest hint of sous bois is the only tell of the 2004's 20 years as a subtle tug of residual tannins and a tinge of licorice linger. Impossible to ignore! (Drink between 2024-2030). WA 93 (6/2009): Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is an intense, full-bodied red that is simply captivating for its seamless dark fruit and superb depth. Rich, round and delicious, this racy Brunello offers plenty of dark fruit with sweet scents of licorice, leather and spices that linger on the long, refined finish. Clean notes of minerality give the wine superb balance. This is easily the most elegant, refined Brunello I have tasted yet from Canalicchio di Sopra and is one of the highlights in 2004. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

The nose is dark and mineral-inflected with a blast of crushed raspberry, cherry and darker blackberry fruits wafting up from the glass, as sweet florals, underscored by moist soil and hints of cedar amass. On the palate, silky, almost creamy textures, offset by a stunning mix of salty-minerals and acids with savory herbs, and inner earth tones tempted the senses for another sip. The finish is remarkably long, resonating on minerals and dark fruits, almost balsamic and spicy, as its tannic structure comes forward and reminds me that this Brunello is still just a baby. | VM 95 (11/2020): The 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out stunning, remarkably vibrant and an almost-ethereal expression. There’s an exotic citrusy tinge to its ripe black cherries, taking on hints of sage, cedar and allspice, all grounded by moist earth tones. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. The structure builds like a crescendo, as minerals fade to youthful tannins. Juicy acids maintain perfect balance from start to finish, making for a surprisingly fresh expression yet with amazing length. There’s simply so much going on here, and there are promises of more good things to come. Eric Guido. |
