| BH 89-91 (4/2017): (this is actually a premier cru but it is not declared as such.) A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required. Drink 2025+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| BH 89-92 (4/2018): A notably ripe nose features notes of cassis, plum liqueur, anise and a discreet hint of wood. There is a finer texture to the still muscular and sappy flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the firm and youthfully austere finish. This too should age effortlessly. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2019): A perfumed and borderline exotic nose speaks of elegant and very pretty aromas of red currant, plum and dark cherry. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors also exude evident minerality on the focused, intense and moderately austere finale that makes clear that this is going to need a few years to become more pliant and user-friendly. Drink 2025+. |

| VM 92+ (3/2015): Medium red. Sexy, inviting aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoke and rose petal. Juicy and fine-grained but youthfully imploded, with very good acidity giving this large-scaled wine excellent delineation. Finishes very long and sweet, with a boatload of powerful but ripe tannins. Offers superb potential but will require considerable patience. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2018): Very dark ruby-red. Pure, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, violet and crushed rock. A step up in sucrosité and pliancy, offering an almost voluptuous texture to its dense flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, minerals and violet. Verging on chocolatey in its ripeness but holds its shape nicely. Finishes with extremely fine tannins, a slight medicinal reserve, strong saline minerality and superb length. Carrying the highest pH among these 2016s, this beauty conveys a wonderfully relaxed impression without any obvious signs of overripeness. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

| BH 94 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Here too there is a touch of reduction that is again just enough to shave the top notes off the otherwise pure and elegant nose so I would also suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is very good phenolic maturity to the supporting and well-integrated structure that shapes the sleekly muscular medium weight plus flavors that exude a fine minerality on the seductively textured finish. This robust effort is clearly built for the very long haul and other than perhaps trying a bottle young just to understand what you have, this beauty is one to bury in the cellar and forget for a very long time. Drink 2027+. Outstanding! |

VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent. BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage. WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment). BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 95 (1/2018): Saturated ruby. Youthfully imploded aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis and licorice show no roasted character ("the color of the wine is the only thing that gives away the vintage," noted Guillaume d'Angerville). More pliant than the 2016 but with a magical sugar/acid equilibrium and a complicating element of savory minerality. This insidiously palate-saturating wine finishes with outstanding slatey persistence and grip. I would imagine that this will be long-lived but will it ever really shut down in the bottle? It's hard to imagine that this fruit was harvested on September 4. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to regisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is tasted from two barrels. It demonstrates wonderful grace and precision with mineral-infused cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. There is a sense of vitality and sophistication here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The oak is beautifully integrated, notes of orange rind and even just a subtle touch of honey towards the relatively powerful and sustained finish that just feels audacious. Wonderful. Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (1/2024): The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. (Drink between 2028-2048). Neal Martin. BH 93-95 (4/2024): A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding. (Drink starting 2034). |

BH 92-95 (4/2009): This too is mildly reduced, making the nose difficult to accurately read though the lacy, pure and laser-like precision and focus of the medium weight flavors is nothing short of remarkable and here the emphasis on a base of stone is perhaps even more pronounced than in the Taillepieds, all wrapped in a harmonious, understated yet driving finish that does not seem to stop for several minutes. This is a not a big Ducster but for purity of delivery, it's hard to beat and the balance is impeccable. Don't miss! Outstanding! Drink: 2017+ VM 92 (4/2010): Medium red. Darker aromas of black cherry and spices. Dense and spicy on the palate; fuller and sweeter than the Taillepieds but also quite fresh and built to age. This is still a bit stunted from the mise but the substantial dusty tannins display lovely sweetness. Aeration brought impressive early complexity. WA 91 (6/2010): The d’Angerville’s 2007 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is far more concentrated and youthful in aspect than its Champans counterpart, with blackberry, cherry pit, black tea, crushed stone, and iodine combining with relative firmness of texture, but with compensatory richness of beef marrow adding to its darkly-hued, bitter-edged, somber complexity. I suspect that this palate-staining Volnay will keep longer than most of its ilk in this vintage, perhaps 8-10 years. |

BH 94 (4/2012): A superbly fresh and beautifully layered nose of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which remains at present youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 10 to 12 years to be at its peak and readers should note that unlike some '08s, this will not be especially approachable young. Drink 2020+. VM 93+ (3/2011): Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices. Lush and silky in the mouth but with terrific energy and a weightless character to the flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This round but very young wine has a terrific spine for development in bottle. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy vibrancy. Has the most dimension of this set of 2008s. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (4/2014): Palish bright red. Highly perfumed nose combines redcurrant, cherry, smoky minerals and faded flowers, complicated by earth and caramel nuances. Taut and juicy in the mouth, with a tightly coiled spring of pungent minerality energizing the youthful flavors of ripe cherry, redcurrant, smoke and spices. Much less creamy than the Champans, with a saline calcaire element giving the mid-palate uncanny detail. Finishes sweet, subtle and long, with utterly seamless, fine-grained tannins. With its firm tannins and strong minerality, this should make a great dinner companion--but give it at least six or seven years in the cellar. BH 91 (4/2014): An incredibly perfumed, airy and cool nose speaks of anise, essence of red berry fruit, stone and floral hints. There is a distinctly textured mouth feel to the restrained and beautifully well-detailed and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess a highly refreshing mouth feel, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, restrained and delicious finish. A lovely and very understated effort that should also reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! WA 91 (12/2013): The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has an accomplished, sophisticated, mineral-driven bouquet that echoes the nascent 2012. The palate is crisp and a little leafy on the entry, something just slightly autumnal about it. The tannins are firm and just a touch austere, but they are neatly embroidered into the black fruit profile. The finish exerts a pleasant grip and it lingers long in the mouth. This is a classy wine hemmed in by an average growing season. These 2011s were all tasted with Guillaume d'Angerville at the domaine in Volnay. |

| VM 95+ (10/2019): Saturated dark red-ruby. Deep, powerful aromas of kirsch, menthol, licorice and dark chocolate, along with a faint musky nuance. Wonderfully rich and enveloping wine, with its distinctly dark fruit flavors accented by pepper and spices. At once dense and energetic owing to its sappy minerality and surprising back-end acidity, this wine is nonetheless a bit of a bruiser, as its fully ripe but serious mouth-clenching tannins are going to need time to resolve. But the wine's impressive salty, mineral-driven persistence suggests that it will be long-lived. (13.5% alcohol; September 6 harvest; 35 h/h produced; 3.36 pH; d'Angerville attributed the unusually dark color of this wine to drought conditions in Volnay from mid-June to early August). Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 95 (10/2019): Bright, deep red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the young 2017, offering aromas of cherry, blueberry, menthol and licorice and an impression of medicinal reserve. A juicy, spicy, impeccably balanced midweight with outstanding clarity and cut and an enticing touch of sweetness leavened by spiciness. Plenty of tannin/acid spine here to frame and carry the fruit through a long, rising, floral finish. This tightly wound beauty shows the sappy quality of the vintage's better examples and should be long-lived. It would be a shame not to give it at least four or five more years of cellaring, if not eight or ten. (13.05% alcohol; September 25 harvest; 45 h/h; 3.39 pH; from what Guillaume d'Angerville described as a good crop, as this vintage escaped the frost, whose effects, he said, did not extend higher than 260 meters: Clos des Ducs is 300 to 325 meters above sea level, with very good air flow to dissipate frost) (Drink between 2025-2042). | BH 93 (10/2019): Bright medium red. Highly perfumed aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, licorice and flowers. On the lean side but with firm acidity giving cut to the aromatic palate. All about perfume today, and a bit dry on the back end. A second bottle showed a similar nose, but with some darker fruits emerging with air. It also offered considerably more mid-palate pliancy of texture as well as more stuffing to buffer its tannins. The finish is quite fresh, with nicely integrated acidity. My score, needless to say, is for the second bottle. (13.3% alcohol; the Clos des Ducs vines were harvested on September 7; 42 hectoliters per hectare produced; 3.63 pH; bottled three weeks before our tasting) (Drink between 2022-2038). | BH 92 (5/2009): Here the nose offers another discreet if noticeable step up in overall elegance with a cool, sophisticated, airy and wonderfully diaphanous set of red pinot fruit aromas that display the fact that this is a vineyard of obvious altitude. The middle weight flavors are detailed and gorgeously intense, while brimming with minerality on the palate staining finish. Terrific and built to age over the medium term. (Drink starting 2015). |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93-95 (4/2021): A ripe, pure, and airy and elegant nose combines notes of plum, black raspberry and spice with soft earth and floral nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is almost gossamer fine yet there is no lack of punch to the strikingly long and again, beautifully balanced finale. This isn't as dense as the Champans or the Clos des Ducs though it does possess that ineffable quality of breed. This is pretty much textbook Taillepieds. (Drink starting 2031). VM 93-95 (12/2020): The 2019 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with disarmingly pure red cherry, cranberry and rose petal and incense scents. This is one of the domaine’s most alluring aromatics this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well balanced with a sensual, deep finish that caresses the mouth. This is a wonderful Volnay that will give 20-30 years of drinking pleasure. This may well end up at the top of my banded score. (Drink between 2024-2050). Neal Martin. WA 93-95 (1/2021): The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is unusually refined this year, even if it's still very much a vin de garde, unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, cherries, dark chocolate, warm spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, it's deep and layered, with bright acids and beautifully refined tannins. |

BH 92-94 (4/2025): This is aromatically similar to the Caillerets if more floral in character. There is outstanding vibrancy and delineation to the equally beautifully textured medium weight flavors that are akin to rolling a tiny pebble around the mouth, all wrapped in a moderately austere and impressively persistent finale. While perhaps slightly riper than a classic Taillepieds, this is nonetheless excellent with the development potential to match. If you can find it, buy it. (Drink starting 2035). VM 92-94 (1/2025): Coming from a vineyard that is one-third uprooted at the moment, the 2023 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru dials up the marine element on the nose: hints of seaweed and oyster shell percolate through dark berry fruit as a subtle pencil box note gradually emerges. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, nicely judged acidity and gentle grip on the finish. Stylish and suave, this is a very harmonious and pure Taillepieds that will be difficult to resist in its youth. (Drink between 2026-2045). Neal Martin. WA 92-94 (1/2025): The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is also especially charming out of the gates this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of orange zest, dark berries, plums, vine smoke and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with refined tannins and a long, mineral finish. This is an especially suave Taillepieds that will offer a broad drinking window. |
