WA 94+ (10/2013): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus, which I previously tasted from barrel when it was a lot more open, has shut down completely (as a lot of 2009s seem to be doing). Full-bodied and rich, it reveals notes of damp earth, blackberries and creme de cassis as well as a distinctive terroir character. Although there are elevated tannins, they seem relatively sweet and not the least astringent. Nevertheless, this cuvee has gone into a firm, closed state and several years of bottle age is recommended. It should keep for 15-25 years. VM 92 (5/2012): Bright, dark ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. A very rocky style in the mouth, with distinctly black flavors of dark berries, violet and minerals. Less pliant and deep than the Materium but in a more powerful style, finishing with serious tannic spine and lingering violet perfume. A rather cool site that's open to afternoon breezes from the west. Well worth following. WS 91 (10/2012): A dry, earthier expression of dried currant, sage and cedar notes, this gains depth, richness and dimension, yet remains focused on the core flavors of crushed rock and dried berry. Best from 2014 through 2024. 194 cases made. |

WA 98 (10/2016): The 2014 Amoenus comes from a western hillside vineyard near Calistoga that is actually cooler than the general area. This wine always exhibits plenty of crushed rock, wet gravel minerality, notes of forest floor, spring flowers and copious quantities of blackberry and crème de cassis with a hint of lead pencil shavings and pen ink. The 2014 is dense and full-bodied, but with low acidity and ripe well-integrated tannin. It is strutting its stuff, however it should be even better with 5-7 years of bottle age and last 25-30 years. They produce 330 cases of this glorious wine that tips the scales at 14.7% natural alcohol. |

WA 98 (12/2017): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon features vibrant, youthful crushed blackberry and black currant notes with touches of wild thyme, charcoal, pencil shavings and damp soil. Full-bodied, richly fruited and packed with vivacious black fruit and savory layers, it has lovely, ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with great persistence. 240 cases produced. JD 97 (12/2017): From a site in the northern part of the Valley, in Calistoga, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus offers a perfect expression of this ripe, sexy vintage. Loaded with notions of blackberry jam, toasted spice, dried flowers and licorice, it has a beautiful opulence and sweetness of fruit that stays balanced, elegant and fresh. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in 80% new French oak, it has awesome tannin quality, a majestic, layered personality, and will drink nicely for three decades. |

JD 98+ (1/2021): Looking at the two 2018s, the 2018 Amoenus comes from the Blossom Creek Vineyard outside of Calistoga and was brought up in new French oak. Both 2018s are concentrated, powerful wines. The Amoenus possesses a beautiful sense of freshness and purity, yet backs that up with a huge, opulent profile that carries incredible black and blue fruits. Showing more chocolate, tobacco, graphite, and foresty, earthy notes with air, this full-bodied beauty has ample ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly shows the more brooding, backward, powerful style of the vintage and is built for the long haul. Hide bottle for 5-7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 40 years or so. |

VM 91 (6/2008): Lovely perfume to the slightly exotic aromas of smoky raspberry, plum and spices. Sweet, dense, chewy and broad, but with firm acidity giving shape and aromatic lift to the berry, spice and floral flavors. Winemaker Thomas Brown noted that it was necessary to let the fruit hang for a long time to get thorough ripeness, even at the risk of picking a few raisins. And yet this retains a juicy quality and displays lovely lingering perfume. WS 87 (8/2008): Taut yet ripe, with rich currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that's well-structured, with cedary oak and firm tannins that grip and hold. Decant. Drink now through 2012. 614 cases made. |

WA 98 (10/2014): From the red soils near Dalla Valle in the eastern part of the Oakville Corridor, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is a killer wine. It possesses a striking, intense, rocky minerality, an opaque purple color, and deep, beautiful aromas of camphor, spring flowers, blueberries and black raspberry fruit. There is a cool climate character (even though this is not a cool climate viticultural area) as well as superb richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, great delineation and a mindboggling finish that lasts nearly a full minute. This outrageous Cabernet Sauvignon can be drunk now and over the next 25 years. VM 93-95 (5/2014): Medium ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, blueberry, licorice and violet show a lightly exotic character. Silky-sweet and creamy on the palate, but with lovely harmonious acidity enlivening and framing the dark fruit flavors. Suave tannins saturate the finish on the intense, long, pliant back end. This compellingly rich cabernet will merit a rating at the top end of my projected range if it develops more complexity during its final months in barrel. This estate did not bottle any 2011s owing to a high percentage of underripe and rotten grapes, electing instead to sell off the vintage in bulk. Stephen Tanzer. WS 95 (10/2015): A beauty, rich and pure in flavor, structured by firm tannins and acidity and showing a tight focus to the dusty, mineral-tinged dark berry, plum and currant flavors. Ends with fine-grained tannins. A good candidate for cellaring. Drink now through 2028. 595 cases made. JS 94 (7/2015): A fruit-forward style with plum and light jam character plus hints of chocolate. Full body, round tannins and a savory finish. Delicious. Excellent intensity. Retro Napa. Drink now. |

WA 100 (10/2015): There are roughly 600 cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, all of which comes from the Weitz Vineyard on the eastern Vaca Mountain hillside of Oakville at an elevation of about 1,000 feet above the Silverado Trail. This is shallow soil interspersed with loads of pebbles and stones. This wine is incredible first-growth material – a magical Cabernet Sauvignon with an opaque purple color, an extraordinary nose of blackberry and cassis, white flowers, crushed rock and minerality followed by a full-bodied majestic mouthfeel with phenomenal balance, purity and overall equilibrium. Stunningly rich and impressive, this wine will hit its peak in 8-10 years and has the potential to last 40-50 years. For those who keep track of such things, the wine was completely aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud barrels. |

JD 100 (12/2017): One of the greatest wines in the vintage is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a higher elevation hillside vineyard in Oakville that was raised in 90% new French oak barrels. Just magical stuff that has incredible aromatics of crème de cassis, white flowers, huge minerality, violets, and scorched earth. This is followed by a massive, opulent, yet weightless wine that has off the charts purity of fruit, fine, fine tannin, perfect balance, and a finish that won’t quit. This legendary beauty will benefit from 5-6 years of bottle age and keep for three to four decades. WA 97+ (12/2017): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon opens with earthy notions of tilled soil, moss and fungi over an exuberant core of black cherries, wild blueberries, red currants and Mediterranean herbs with a waft of lavender. Full-bodied and opulently fruited in the mouth, the palate delivers generous black fruit and herbal layers, structured with firm, chewy tannins, finishing on a lingering mineral note. 450 cases produced. |
