There is both a lovely texture and energy to the delicious middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Serve it cool though and you won't notice. Drink 2025+. Outstanding!
VM 88-90 (1/2024): The 2022 Bourgogne is bursting with red purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and lavender. This mid-weight, fruity Bourgogne is an absolute delight. Enjoy it over the next few years. It’s a great introduction to this range. Neal Martin. |

As I have observed many times in these pages, volatile acidity is something that all wines have, it’s the degree that matters and whether the nose would bother most people is hard to judge but it did me. BH 94 (4/2024): An exuberantly spicy and quite floral-suffused nose features notes of wild currant, cherry and a gamy hint. The super-sleek and even finer yet more powerful larger-bodied flavors display impressive power on the even more complex, balanced and highly persistent finale. This is a big wine yet the balance is such that it could be approached after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2034+.
VM 93-95+ (1/2024): The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is an imposing young wine. A blast of blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, crushed rock and menthol saturates the palate. This bruiser is going to need time to be at its best, but it is pretty impressive, even in the early going. Neal Martin. |

| BH 94 (4/2025): A beautifully layered, and more expressive, nose features notes of exotic tea and just cracked black pepper on the fresh blend of both red and black pinot fruit. There is markedly better mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins on the impressively persistent and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and quite classy as well. Drink 2035+. |

VM 91-94 (1/2015): (from the Grand Monpertuis section of the Clos, not far from Grands-Echezeaux; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Deep, bright red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and wild herbs are lifted by a peppery topnote. Densely packed and gripping, communicating an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and a saline complexity to its black fruit flavors. At once powerful and elegant, this wine finishes with mouthdusting tannins and excellent breadth and energy. The inclusion of whole clusters has contributed freshness and length, notes Guillaume Boillot.
WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains 30% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It has a harmonious bouquet that is actually not a million miles away from the Chambertin in style (which can be taken as a complement.) The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, sweet anise-tinged entry, fine tannins and a sorbet-like finish. This is one of the best Clos Vougeot wines that I have tasted, although it will need 4 or 5 years in bottle. |

A ripe but restrained nose features notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, humus, smoke and exotic tea scents along with a background hint of oak toast. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. This beauty will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

WA 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, soaring from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, violets, orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with lively acids and a powdery but elegantly refined chassis of structuring tannins, concluding with a long and resonant finish.
BH 92 (4/2020): ( from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) This plays right on the edge of volatile acidity with its nose of poached plum, black raspberry and warm earth. The middle weight flavors are not especially dense but do possess a highly attractive mouthfeel while displaying good power on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This moderately firm effort is somewhat awkward at present, but I suspect that it will recover with age. Drink 2033+. |

BH 94 (4/2013): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Somewhat counterintuitively this possesses riper fruit with distinct sauvage notes to the humus and mineral-inflected, brooding and very cool wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent power to the driving and highly energetic, stony and robust flavors that display impressive mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in an austere, explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a serious wine but then again, isn’t Chambertin virtually always serious in its youth? Drink 2026+.
VM 92-95 (2/2013): Good dark red. Very pure but reticent aromas of dark berries, mocha and sandalwood; smells creamy. Then lush and seamless in the mouth, but with great energy to the flavors of black cherry clafouti, dark chocolate, licorice and pepper. The explosive, slowly mounting finish features substantial fine-grained tannins and black fruit and pepper elements complicated by saline minerality. |

This is also beautifully layered and while not quite as spicy, it’s close though the fruit profile is derived more from plum and dark currant. The super-sleek and more mineral-driven flavors possess medium density and excellent underlying tension that gives the firm and youthfully austere finish real punch. Not surprisingly given that this is Chambertin, extended patience will be necessary. Drink 2035+. |

BH 91 (4/2016): A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe, pure and elegant aromas of spice and floral-inflected dark pinot fruit and plum scents. There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

VM 95-97 (1/2024): The 2022 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru emerges from holdings that straddle the Chassagne and Puligny sides. Super-elegant and refined, Boillot's Batard has a ton to offer, even if it is rather reticent at this stage. White flowers, mint, spice and light pastry overtones add layers of nuance. The 2022 is unctuous, but not at all heavy. This really opens beautifully onto its explosive finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 96 (6/2017): Interestingly, this is as ripe as the Criots if less exotic and certainly more elegant with its pretty scents of white flowers, pear, citrus, green apple and lovely spice nuances. The medium weight plus flavors possess both excellent power and minerality that manage to be at once succulent yet precise, all wrapped in a mandarin orange-inflected finish that goes on and on. I very much like the inner mouth perfumed here and this is class in a glass. Drink 2025+. Dom't miss!
VM 93-96 (9/2016): (a single new 228-liter barrel): Bright pale yellow. Knockout nose combines white peach, nectarine, crushed rock and white pepper, with spicy oak in a complementary role. Penetrating, savory flavors of lemon, lime, peach and crushed stone convey an impression of power without weight. Really terrific fruit and mineral intensity here. BH 95 (6/2020): A discreet whisper of the exotic adds breadth to the aromas of petrol, white flower, green apple, mineral reduction and lovely spice nuances. There is excellent richness to the big-bodied, powerful and concentrated flavors that possess evident minerality on the complex, highly complex and strikingly persistent finish. This is presently a block of stone that will require at least a few years to unwind while amply rewarding 12 to 15 years of upside development. Drink 2030+.

I would note though that while this is extremely backward and a wine that will need the better part of two decades to arrives at its peak, it should be approachable after only 8 to perhaps 10 years. VM 93-95 (9/2016): Full yellow. Smoky minerality dominates the nose. Fat and sweet on entry, then juicy and penetrating but not austere in the middle, with the wine's thickness leavened by smoky silex minerality. The super-intense and well-muscled flavors seem to be built on a firm base of minerality before culminating in an explosively long finish. Note well that like the Montrachet, this presently taciturn effort is very clearly built-to-age and is going to require a minimum of 7 to 8 years of cellaring first and reward far longer. VM 93-96 (9/2017): (75% new oak; 4.4 grams per liter acidity; from vines in Aloxe, which Boillot picked last in 2016 before starting on Pinot Noir): Bright light-medium yellow. Subtly complex, musky aromas of peach, caraway seed, nutmeg, mace and hazelnutty lees. At once densely packed and penetrating, with a stony citric pungency giving precision to the seamless middle palate and cutting through the wine's texture. Wonderfully pure and energetic for this cuvee, finishing tactile and unflagging, with terrific citrus lift. This has the palate-staining length and structure for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle; it's also the only 2016 here that struck me as tannic, but then classic Corton-Charlemagne typically shows structure more like a red wine. A ripe, cool and equally restrained nose offers up notes of green apple, floral, an array of citrus and, like the Chevalier, plenty of mineral reduction. There is excellent power and volume to the delicious yet entirely serious broad-shouldered flavors that possess both terrific cut and minerality, all wrapped in a clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. This isn't quite as dense or powerful as the Montrachet but even so, there is much to admire and note well that this too should age exceptionally well. Drink 2033+.
WA 95 (1/2020): The most youthfully reserved wine in the cellar was the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a promising bottling that opens up to reveal scents of citrus zest, dried white flowers, green apple and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with racy acids and prodigious levels of searingly chalky dry extract that lend this wine incredible structure. |

While there is certainly good richness to the succulent and seductive broad-shouldered flavors, the mouthfeel is really quite sleek with both good detail and power to the taut, serious and built-to-age finale that is given a bit of lift from the presence of bitter citrus rind. This is almost painfully intense and youthfully austere effort could use better depth but that should present no particular problem if it's given a chance to develop. This too is first-rate. VM 93-95 (1/2024): The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a blend of fruit from Aloxe-Corton (75%) and Pernand-Vergelesses (25%), a combination that works well in giving the wine balance. There's quite a bit of phenolic intensity and youthful austerity here. Herbs, crushed rocks, graphite, mint and citrus confit build nicely. WA 92-94 (1/2019): Aromas of mandarin, orange blossom, musky peaches, honeycomb and anise introduce the 2017 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and exotic wine with a broad, textural attack but a nicely controlled, even tangy mid-palate and finish, concluding on a lingering saline note, that expresses this site at its best.
VM 91-93 (9/2018): Pale, bright yellow. Explosive yellow and white stone fruits on the nose, accented by mandarin orange and white flowers. Then thick-verging-on-unctuous in the mouth, offering highly concentrated citrus and stone fruit flavors along with suggestions of exotic fruits. This outsized fruit bomb is given shape and lift by harmonious acidity and gravelly minerality, but it's in a somewhat more southern style than the Clos de la Mouchère, and shows less distinction. BH 96 (6/2015): (from Puligny fruit in 2012 whereas prior vintages have been from Chassagne). An almost mute nose is comprised of highly complex aromas of citrus, pear, petrol, tea, green apple and floral characters. The full-bodied, dense and overtly muscular flavors are deep, dense and impressively scaled while displaying terrific power on the gorgeously long finish. In particular I like the palate staining dry extract, which should permit this to age well for at least a decade and more probably 12 to 15 years. Drink 2025+. Don't miss!
VM 93-95 (10/2014): Pale, bright yellow. Vibrant aromas of orange zest, lime leaf, linden flower and crushed rock. Dense, thick and utterly seamless, but a bit heavier and less refined than the Chevalier-Montrachet. This big boy displays Outstanding depth of fruit and a slightly exotic soft citrus character. Incidentally, this wine is carrying a moderate 13% alcohol. Boillot has long maintained that alcohol is inversely proportional to energy, and that a white Burgundy at 14% is unlikely to have real vigor.
WA 93-95 (12/2014): The 2013 Montrachet Grand Cru has a complex bouquet: subtle grilled walnut notes tincturing the mineral scents. It is reticent at first, but unfolds nicely in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with good weight, nicely judged acidity, plenty of mineral notes, although the finish is just a little conservative. Still, there is a pleasant saline note lingering on the aftertaste. Give this several years in bottle - it just needs to develop more "charm." |

BH 97 (6/2020): As good as the Chevalier is, and it's really good, this is arguably the most complex wine in the range with its mix of highly restrained and super-complex white orchard fruit, acacia blossom, citrus, spice, soft oak and jasmine tea aromas. The wonderfully seductive yet beautifully sleek large-scaled flavors bathe the palate in sappy dry extract while delivering superb length on the focused, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is a magnificent mineral-driven Montrachet and one of the best wines of the 2018 vintage. A genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2033+.

BH 97 (6/2024): There is a subtle exotic character to the jasmine tea, dried herb, orange peel, anise and eucalyptus-suffused nose. The sleek, precise and borderline painfully intense flavors aren't quite as imposing as the of the Bâtard (see Domaine Boillot) but they are notably finer with seemingly an unending reserve of dry extract that buffers the very firm acid spine on the massively long finish. This is a superb Montrachet to basically buy and forget you own it for at least a decade and it wouldn't surprise me if this beauty needed all of 15 years to reach its full potential. Brilliant.
