Depth and Purity of Henri Gouges

If you’re looking to add red Burgundy of uncompromising authenticity and terroir expression to your cellar, the wines of Domaine Henri Gouges deserve your full attention. Situated in the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, this historic estate has long been a standard-bearer for powerful, age-worthy, and deeply characterful Pinot Noir—wines that speak clearly of place and reward patience like few others in the region.
Gouges remains one of the most respected traditionalists in Burgundy, farming old vines across some of the village’s greatest sites, including Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, and Les Chênes-Carteaux. The domaine’s commitment to low yields, meticulous vineyard care, and restrained, honest winemaking results in reds that are firm, structured, and intensely mineral in youth, unfolding over time into remarkably complex, savory, and aromatic expressions. These are wines built for collectors who appreciate depth, longevity, and classical Burgundy craftsmanship.
Recent vintages have reached a new peak of finesse. While still true to their heritage of structure and gravitas, today’s releases show more polish, purity of fruit, and aromatic lift—making them both more accessible and even more compelling to age. Whether you’re seeking benchmark Nuits-Saint-Georges for the cellar or simply want to experience the unmistakable Gouges style, these reds offer rare value and exceptional pedigree.

JM 89-92 (11/2021): Racked to tank to bottle before Christmas. A massively deep black colour with a purple rim. The nose is supercharged, too flamboyant perhaps, but works better in the mouth. Some pepper behind with plenty of juice, recognisably Nuits with very good length. BH 88-90 (1/2022): A mentholated top note is present on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis, earth and bitter chocolate. The rich, velvet-textured and concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess pretty good verve and length on the slightly warm finale. This will need to develop better depth to merit the upper-end of my projected range. Drink 2026+. |

WA 91-93 (2/2012): The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges is the first wine in this lineup that shows the structure of the vintage. Freshly cut flowers, minerals, graphite and black cherries are woven into a textured fabric of notable class. I especially like its energy and drive. A precise, finely-chiseled finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. VM 91-93 (2/2012): Good full red. Redcurrant, raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality on the rather serious nose. At once silky and tangy in the mouth, with raspberry and stone flavors dominating. A step up in breadth and dimension from the foregoing wines, offering lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very representative of the south side of the village: "never with explosive fruit early," notes Gouges. Has the firm tannin/acid structure to age. This large Clos comprises 3.8 hectares of vines. BH 90-92 (1/2012): (a 3.5 ha monopole with 30+ year old vines). Reduction dominates the nose. By contrast to the funky nose, there is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the precise, intense and vibrant middle weight plus flavors that possess good volume. There is admirable persistence on the quite firm finish that is at once pure and actually rather refined, which is not always the case with this wine. Worth a look. Drink 2022+. |

JM 94 (9/2022): A fresher ruby purple. Delicious dense but lively fruit, the floral side of raspberry. A superb wine in the style of the vintage though with bracing acidity at the back. Tense and crunchy, yet covered by lots of fruit. All well harnessed, will age extremely well. Drink from 2033. VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. Neal Martin. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2018): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. The rich, delicious and caressing medium weight plus flavors possess a velvety mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the very firm, saline and lingering finish. This is muscular but not really rustic. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90 (1/2007): An earthy but finer and more elegant red fruit nose with lovely nuances of dried herbs, game, smoke and a touch of iron leads to textured, intense, mouth coating and finer medium full flavors that possess excellent inner-mouth perfume, wrapped in a dusty, sweet and seriously long if slightly edgy finish. As it always is, this is a wine of evident class with a firm core of tannins yet the entire package is one of grace and harmony. (Drink starting 2011). |

BH 92 (1/2011): A more elegant but cool and reserved nose of exceptionally pure red berry and plum aromas also possesses notes of earth and underbrush that transfer seamlessly over to the rich, full and focused medium weight plus flavors that are actually quite supple and round but where this really distinguishes itself from the Vaucrains is the seriously impressive depth on the moderately austere and mildly herbal but hugely long finish. Like the Vaucrains, this will need plenty of time. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! WA 92 (6/2010): Another vividly red-fruited as well as red meaty and tight, bright, yet silken-textured essay, the Gouges 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges incorporates piquant sage, black pepper, toasted nuts, salt, and fruit pits in its long, lip-smacking finish. There are low-toned dimensions of roasted red meats and peat as well as an emerging, decadent inner-mouth aura of floral perfume that take one beyond the complexities of the corresponding Vaucrains, and at the same time - notwithstanding bright fresh fruit vivacity - lend a sense of substantiality note found in any of the other Gouges 2008s. I would expect this to perform well for 15 or more years. VM 92+ (4/2011): Moderately saturated medium red. Tight, pure nose offers restrained scents of cherry, flowers and peppery spices. Then sweet but taut in the mouth; impressively concentrated owing to the very low yield here but quite closed and hard to taste today. Perfumed and powerful wine but ungiving, and showing less sweetness than the Vaucrains. I'd hold this for five years. |

BH 92-94 (1/2015): ( from a 1.1 ha parcel of 55+ year old vines.) A ripe and extremely fresh nose exhibits perfumed aromas of cassis, earth, spice, plum liqueur and the classic Nuits animale character along with a background touch of wood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the velvet-textured broad-shouldered yet refined flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality onto the balanced, suave and mouth coating finale. This is a bit less structured than it usually is and certainly less so than the Vaucrains if only just. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2015): Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Saint Georges, the “Grand Cru in waiting," is bestowed a pastille-like purity on the nose that takes time to get motoring, with a cheeky touch of marmalade developing. The palate is medium-bodied, has real class, bridled with with superb tension and fine tannins, even if it does not quite possess the riveting persistency on the finish that would complete the package. Still, this is a very fine Les Saint Georges that may merit a higher appraisal post-bottling. |

VM 94 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru presents a clean, crisp bouquet of wild strawberry and raspberry fruit that blossoms in the glass, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity and a nice underlying bitterness, though there is a very slight attenuation on the finish. Otherwise, this is a fine, classically styled Nuits Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Neal Martin. JM 92 (9/2021): Concentrated deep purple, with significant energy, potentially very exciting. Lush, surprisingly high acidity and not quite the complexity I hoped for. More red than black, possibly picked a tad early for this site. |

| JM 94 (9/2022): Fine bright deep purple. Plenty of energy here. Classical for Vaucrains with the extra purity and precision of this vineyard. Picked at a very good moment, with depth and grip, some dark fruit notes stopping just short of chocolate. Immaculate length. Sensual but structured. Drink from 2035. |

VM 92 (4/2011): Good bright red. Complex, highly aromatic nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, game, iron, leather and peppery herbs. Sweeter in the middle and more powerful than the Pruliers but with lively spiciness and peppery lift. Finishes ripe and long. A lovely wine, seemingly less austere than the 2009 version. WA 91 (6/2010): Raw red meat and tart cherry in the nose of Gouges’s 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains are accented with sage, white pepper, and salinity, all of which combine in the mouth for a pungency, vivacious, saliva-inducing, and deeply-concentrated impression. Here are both the meat and the meat-tenderizing acids, herbs, and brine in one, handy glass! This displays a surprisingly caressing, silken texture to compliment its brightness, and finishes with vibratory intensity as well as invigoration and refreshment such as one doesn’t expect from its genre. The strongly mineral and carnal elements as well as the slightly acerbic personality will excite some of us more than they will others. I think this will prove delightfully and intriguingly versatile over the next 12-15 years. BH 91-93 (1/2010): (a 1 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age). Gouges noted that they harvested only 18 hl/ha in 2008. Mild reduction does not completely hide the herb-infused ripe red berry fruit aromas that are nuanced by hints of earth and underbrush, both of which can be found on the rich, full and very serious flavors that are tautly muscular and possess real tension on the mouth coating, concentrated and impressively persistent finish. This is not a big Vaucrains by the usual standards of this wine but it's focused and powerful. Drink 2018+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 92-94 (1/2015): ( from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) A very spicy nose is composed of dense aromas of plum, violet, earth and pomegranate, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The beautifully textured middle weight plus flavors possess excellent power and verve on the powerful finish that is shaped by a very firm core of ripe tannins. This is a deceptive wine as the mid-palate is supple to the point of being inviting yet the finale is firm to the point of mild austerity. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 92 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains has an introverted, slightly earthy bouquet with a light marine influence upon the dark fruit. With aeration it comes out of its shell, brightens up and reveals more red fruit character. The palate is clean and fresh with fine tannin, well judged acidity, supple in the mouth with plenty of raspberry, red cherry and cedar notes towards the composed silky finish. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges that will repay 3-4 more years in the cellar. VM 91-94 (1/2015): (18 hectoliters per hectare produced): Full medium red. Very pure aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, mocha and chocolate mint, complicated by truffley underbrush. Sweet, sappy and deep; rich and tactile, combining lovely finesse of texture with obvious force. This highly concentrated, youthfully austere Vaucrains finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90-92 (12/2014): Cropped at 18 hectoliters per hectare due to millerande grapes, the 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains is more open and expressive on the nose compared to the Pruliers ’13, the fruit veering more to the red spectrum with heightened mineralite. There is also more femininity here and that translates to the palate that is silky smooth and beautifully poised. There is not a huge depth or power here, but there is great tension and vibrancy. Very fine, but it deserves two or three years in bottle. |

BH 93 (1/2017): (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) Here too there is a subtle application of wood setting off the intensely spicy and overtly sauvage aromas of mostly cassis and black raspberry aromas that are also liberally laced with warm earth and green tea nuances. The muscular big-bodied flavors possess real power and punch along with ample minerality before terminating in a hugely long, complex and well-balanced finale. As it always is this is distinctly old school in style and will definitely require extended cellaring. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! VM 91-94 (1/2016): Dark red-ruby. Tight, medicinal aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and menthol. Very rich and deep, with captivating sweetness cut by medicinal menthol and minerals. Highly concentrated, dense and broad but uncompromisingly dry. Finishes very long and perfumed, with serious saline tension. This very impressive premier cru has a big tannic structure and may well close down after the bottling. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90-92 (12/2015): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains, cropped at 26 hectoliters per hectare, was just a little loose-knit on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, perhaps missing the cohesion of the Pruliers. The palate pulls things together with slightly savory red berry fruit, fine tannin and well judged acidity. There is a chalky note coming through on the finish and a spiciness that comes through on the aftertaste. Again, classic in style, at the moment the palate is leading the way and waiting for the nose to catch up. |

| BH 94 (1/2018): (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) An exuberantly spicy nose offers up notes of cassis, various black fruit nuances and plenty of earth and game scents. The dense, powerful and brooding big-bodied flavors possess outstanding volume and mid-palate concentration where the abundant dry extract serves to buffer the very firm and imposing tannic spine on the hugely long finish. This is certainly a big wine, in fact it's borderline massive and not surprisingly it's going to need a very long time to arrive at its full potential. Recommended. Drink 2035+. Outstanding! |
