| VM 92+ (12/2016): Good deep red. Captivating aromas of sweet cherry, crushed rocks and violet. Juicy, suave and perfumed, showing excellent vinosity to the complex, very precise flavors of plum, sour red cherries and dried herbs. Fine-grained tannins and lovely lingering aromatic perfume are featured on the long, very pure finish. Another superb vintage for this bottling, which is the most Burgundian of all of Terre Nere’s various Etna Rosso crus. It also strikes me as having less of an alcohol thrust than the other reds made at Terre Nere in this vintage. Ian d'Agata. |

WA 96 (12/2018): This is Tenuta delle Terre Nere's top-shelf expression (with only 6,000 bottles produced). The 2016 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Prephylloxera le Vigne di Don Peppino shows the power and the might of Etna viticulture with the delicate grace and elegance that identifies these unique wines. This expression is expansive and generous—but in an unexpected way. The palate is streamlined and focused, yet those fine nuances of wild berry, spice, ash and rose are wide-ranging and very long in persistence.
VM 95+ (8/2019): Good full, deep red. Downright sexy, scented aromas and flavors of ripe strawberry, Oriental spices and spiced orange zest. Then very pure, silky, and wonderfully spherical, with luscious flavors of red berries, aromatic spices expressing lovely inner-mouth perfume. This seamless wine finishes with exceptionally suave tannins, lingering perfume and an exceptional ready to drink quality. (The wine carries the name of the Calderara Sottana contrada on the label but in fact, three rows of these vines are actually located in the nearby Santo Spirito contrada). (Drink between 2021-2029). JD 94 (5/2019): As with all these releases from Tenuta Delle Terre Nere, the 2016 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera has a Burgundian vibe in its sweet cherry and currants fruits as well as notes of forest floor, spice, and obvious minerality. A more structured, tannic wine, it nevertheless has beautiful balance, integrated acidity, and remarkable purity of fruit. This thrilling wine from Sicily is going to benefit from another year or two of bottle age and keep for 10-15 years. |

| JS 93 (8/2021): This Etna red has so much going for it, but the amerena-cherry aroma is very ripe and, on the palate, the first impression is of suppleness that we don’t immediately associate with this appellation. Lovely balance right now, thanks to the full body and moderate tannins. Good length, but only moderate tension at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. |
