BH 94 (1/2017): (from 25% En Gemeaux and 75% En la Chapelle.) Once again there is an overt floral component to the beautifully fresh nose that offers up notes of black raspberry, earth and discreet spice and wood nuances. There is fine detail and plenty of volume to the less obviously mineral-inflected middle weight plus flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the solid mid-palate density, all wrapped in a balanced and lingering if slightly austere finale. This too is definitely firmly structured and like the Latricières is not going to make for good early drinking. Excellent. Drink 2026+.
VM 93+ (3/2017): Palish medium red. Ripe, musky aromas of redcurrant, plum, smoke, dried flowers and earth. Fat and sweet on entry, then a bit more clenched in the middle, conveying terrific depth to the flavors of cherry, redcurrant and crushed rock. This distinctly salty, soil-driven 2014 finishes with fine-grained tannins and terrific mounting length. Chapelle's warmer terroir often outperforms in cooler vintages. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93 (1/2012): Trapet indicated that he used 50% whole clusters in the vinification. This is also very fresh with a highly floral nose of notably ripe and perfumed red berry fruit, earth and stone scents. There is good punch to the robust and well-detailed, flavors that are not as refined but possess more power and a bit more length as well. This very serious effort is most impressive. (Drink starting 2019).
VM 92 (5/2011): The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Capita is a blend of five 1er Cru sites; Petite Chapelle, En Ergot, Clos Prieur, Corbeaux and Combottes. It is a multi-dimensional, totally expressive wine that blossoms beautifully on the palate, showing gorgeous richness but no heaviness whatsoever – one of the most magical attributes of Pinot Noir. The fruit is rich, round and caressing all the way through to the sensual finish. The Capita shows tons of persistence and fabulous overall balance. Trapet used 60% whole clusters here. VM 92 (3/2017): Light-medium red. Wonderfully scented nose combines strawberry, cherry, dried rose and earth. Very pure, silky wine with subtle sweetness and a seamless texture to its sappy fruit, spice and saline mineral flavors. Boasts a terrific combination of thickness and energy. Most impressive today on the unflagging, classically dry finish, which leaves behind a cherry perfume. Really positive use of whole clusters here. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 90-92 (1/2016): (from a blend of 3 1ers that include Corbeaux, En Ergot and Combottes.) Here too there is a discreet application of wood framing the overtly floral aromas that include both lavender and rose along with notes of earth and freshly crushed red berries. The beautifully sleek and intense middle weight flavors exhibit an appealing hint of minerality on the refined, balanced and dusty finish. Lovely and understated. Drink 2024+. |

JD 93 (11/2021): The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea is a brilliant bottle that comes from four different parcels around the village of Brochon, with some of the vines going back all the way to 1919. The name Ostrea refers to the oyster shells found in the parcels designated for this cuvée. Fermented with 30% stems and aged in roughly 30-40% new French oak, it reveals a medium ruby/plum color as well as a textbook Gevrey nose of darker currant and black raspberry fruits supported by loamy earth, bouquet garni, and assorted spices. Medium-bodied on the palate, with nicely integrated oak, it has the vintage's up-front fruit yet still brings plenty of tannic structure, good acidity, and outstanding length. It needs an hour or so in a decanter if drinking any time soon and will have another 15+ years of prime drinking ahead of it. (Drink between 2021-2037).
BH 90 (1/2021): Once again there is a subtle but not invisible dollop of wood suffusing the notably floral-inflected aromas of earth, forest floor and various dark berries. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the opulent yet impressively well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that pack very good power and punch on the long, complex and balanced finale. This too is excellent for its level and one to look for provided you can give it at least 6 to 8 years first as it's pretty tightly wound. (Drink starting 2028). |

Pure and silky but with terrific inner-mouth tension to the sappy crushed fruit flavors. Denser than the Latricieres, but every bit as vibrant--and more backward today. Finishes with ripe tannins and subtly complex notes of fruit, game and saline, smoky underbrush. Superb.
BH 93 (1/2011): (from a 2 ha parcel that runs from the bottom to the very top of the slope.) A pure, airy and very cool nose of pungent minerality and slightly sauvage red berries is the epitome of aromatic elegance and serves as a graceful introduction to the broad-shouldered and sleekly muscular flavors that possess good freshness and plenty of vibrancy while culminating in an intensely mineral-driven, focused and powerful finish that is wonderfully persistent, linear and extremely tight. This too will need plenty of time to unwind, which I estimate at between 14 to 18 years. Drink 2023+.

Berry skin tartness and peaty pungency convey invigoration, while pure sweetness of berry fruit and vivid meatiness vie for one’s primary attention. There is a crushed stone note that lends a hint of austerity to otherwise energetically bright and decidedly palate-staining finishing proceedings. Like several of the 2008s here, this may have been suffering a bit from recent bottling as there is a slight sense of constriction where I would otherwise expect the wine to open up more. Still, this is impressive juice with at least 12-15 year potential. |

BH 96 (1/2012): (From 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) A relatively high-toned nose that is cool, restrained and notably more floral offers up notes of stone, game, underbrush, humus and a noble vegetal note on the red cherry and cassis suffused nose. The intensely mineral-driven and vibrant flavors possess real muscle and drive continue onto the very firm, palate staining and youthfully austere finish. Like the Latricières, this fantastic effort will best suit the patient as this is very unlikely to develop quickly. In short, this is a knockout. Drink 2024+.
WA 96 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambertin shows some of the openness of the Chapelle but the structural elements more closely resemble the Latricieres. If that sounds appealing, believe me, it is. Trapet’s Chambertin exudes class and pedigree in its impeccable layered fruit, gorgeous detail and silky, textured finish. Striking, beautifully delineated aromatics are woven throughout. Simply put, the Chambertin is a must-have wine in this vintage. In 2009 the Chambertin was made with 40% whole clusters, slightly more than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2049.
VM 96+ (3/2012): (50% new oak, the same as the Chapelle-Chambertin): Good medium red. Wonderfully complex, high-pitched nose combines musky raspberry, strong minerality, lavender and wild herbs; soil-driven but not earthy. Like liquid silk on entry, then sappy and imploded in the mouth, with complex soil hints, no hard edges and a wonderfully light touch for such a seamless wine. Less high-pitched than the nose suggests, but this amazingly fine-grained Chambertin is lifted and framed by superb mineral energy. Really explodes with aeration, finishing with noble tannins and a powerful impression of terroir. This should evolve in bottle for decades. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (1/2013): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) A reticent, even shy but highly complex nose features intensely floral aromas of pure wild red berry fruit, wet stone, underbrush and a whiff of the sauvage. This is a big and powerful wine which makes for an interesting contrast with the silky palate impression of the well-muscled and large-scaled flavors that are underpinned by very ripe tannins and that lovely sense of tension on the wonderfully energetic and persistent finish. This should age well for years to come, though once again, note well that this will require ample bottle age before it can deliver all of its full, and considerable, potential. In sum, this is a stunningly good Chambertin. Drink 2027+.
VM 96+ (3/2013): (about 50% vendange entier): Good full, deep red. Profound nose offers red and darker fruits, smoked meat, rose petal, minerals and complex soil tones; shows similarities to the Latricieres but is less expressive today--and a bit wilder. Big, rich and mouthfilling but without any undue impression of weight; sweetness is restrained today. Huge, classically dry wine with a broad, palate-staining finish that throws off notes of licorice, spices and white pepper. Perfectly ripe but not a bit overripe. Trapet told me his grand cru vineyards produced about 25 hectoliters per hectare in 2010. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 95-97 (12/2011): The 2010 Chambertin is arguably the most complete of the Trapet Grand Crus. The Chambertin is distinguished for its seamless, generous fruit and totally inviting personality. Crushed flowers, sweet spices and licorice are some of the many notes that develop in the glass, adding complexity and depth to the expansive, creamy finish. The 2010 Chambertin was stunning a year ago, it is stunning today and my impression is it will always be magnificent, even if it is likely to go through a stubborn period somewhere along the way. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045. |

BH 96 (1/2015): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha, 90% whole cluster.) This is ultra-cool and restrained aromatically with its airy and even elegant aromas of intensely floral, spicy and stony wild dark berry scents that are also trimmed in just enough wood to warrant commenting on. There is a gorgeous texture to the equally mineral-inflected and muscular broad-shouldered and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a Zen-like harmony on the impeccably well-balanced, moderately austere and hugely long finish. This should be genuinely wonderful if given at least a decade's snooze in a cool cellar. I should also note that by the standards of this wine the 2012 version is not super-powerful but I very much like the sense of harmony. Drink 2027+.
VM 96 (3/2015): (90% vendange entier, from grapes Trapet described as perfect): Good medium red, a bit less dark than the Latricières. Musky aromas of redcurrant, flint, red licorice and rocky minerality lifted by a floral topnote. Enters the mouth with great breadth, then tightens up dramatically in the middle, conveying an almost 2010-like tautness to its raspberry and crushed stone flavors. Actually comes across today as less thick and sweet than the Latricières, and utterly weightless. Builds inexorably to a crescendo on the explosive, gripping back end, which leaves the palate vibrating with licorice and peppery herbs. I love the stem influence here. Should make a classic, monumental Chambertin.
WA 94 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine J-L Trapet has a very perfumed, mint-tinged bouquet with desiccated orange peel infusing the slightly oxidised maraschino and strawberry fruit. It is very contained - never fully lets go. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, very supple tannin, plenty of juicy red cherry fruit, but feels a tad flat-footed towards the finish. It does not quite possess the chutzpah of its peers at the moment, though Trapet's Chambertin consistently repays cellaring. |
