Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Feves |

|
WS 91 (5/2008): A round red, with black cherry and spice flavors picking up a little iron as this moves across the palate. Well-structured and concentrated, turning more elegant on the refreshing finish. Best from 2012 through 2025. 400 cases imported. WA 88 (6/2007): From a little-known monopole situated above Cent Vignes, Chanson’s 2005 Beaune Clos des Feves shares with its better-known neighbor high-toned aromas of cherry and cherry pit. In the mouth, licorice, cherry pit, brown spices and wet stones mingle with promising dynamic against a backdrop of firm, fine tannins, and a decidedly bitter-sweet and stony concentration completes a picture that promises positive development over the next several years. Also recommended: 2005 Beaune Teurons (85). |

BH 92 (10/2007): A ripe and spicy dark berry fruit nose that displays plenty of Gevrey earth and lower register game notes that introduce round, rich, delicious and dusty flavors that possess very good if not truly excellent concentration and ample mid-palate sap on the mouth coating and round finish that delivers very solid length. This is relatively forward for the vintage but it will still be a wine in need of the better part of a decade to arrive at its majority. Drink 2013+. |

Chateau de la Tour |
2010 |
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (1.5 L) |

|
BH 94 (1/2013): This is impressively ripe yet superbly fresh with black cherry and floral scents that are trimmed in sauvage hints and a background application of wood. There is excellent mid-palate concentration and richness to the powerful, muscular and energetic large-scaled flavors that possess superb reserves of mouth coating dry extract that serves to impart a seductive mouth feel to the dusty, serious, balanced and strikingly long finish. A genuine knockout. Drink 2022+. VM 92+ (4/2013): (bottled in May of 2012): Good bright, deep red. Medicinal red cherry, raspberry, spices and mint on the vibrant nose. Sweet and suave but at the same time penetrating in the style of the better 2010s, with harmonious acidity framing and energizing the flavors of red fruits, minerals and medicinal herbs. Sexy earth tones contribute complexity, and the long, youthfully tight finish shows an exhilarating spice character. I would not be surprised if this wine merited a higher rating by 2022 or so. |

Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets ex-Domaine |
$99.99 |

|
BH 89-92 (4/2017): A more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of various dark berries along with hints of smoked game, earth and violets. There is impressive richness to the full-bodied, velvety and highly seductive flavors that exhibit a touch of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the sappy and caressing finish where a touch of austerity is present. This is somewhat more firmly structured and will need at least a few years of cellaring first. Drink 2023+. |

Musigny Grand Cru Cuvee Vieilles Vignes ETA 90-120 Days (6x750ML) |
$6,443.99 |

|
|
BH 95-98 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) Like the Amoureuses this too is kaleidoscopically spicy with its broad-ranging nose of red cherry, cassis, plum, violet, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and hoisin. The velvety and mouth coating imposingly-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors are also blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that coat the palate on the highly seductive finish that delivers fantastically good length on the youthfully austere, backward and immaculately well-balanced finale. This too is going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it emerges. Drink 2035+. Don't miss! VM 94-97 (1/2017): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and bitter chocolate are lifted by the most pungent minerality of this range. Combines compelling sweetness and density, but with a finesse of texture that gives this wine an improbably light touch. Remarkably dense but reserved wine, with purple berry liqueur and mineral flavors conveying terrific lift. Easily the best of these 2015s, finishing with a juicy whiplash of flavor. Here the tannins arrive very late and are perfectly integrated with the wine's fruit and soil elements. Still, this vibrant wine is extremely backward and unevolved in the early going and will require long aging. Winemaker François Millet expects to do a very light fining at the bottling. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-97 (12/2016): The 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially more introspective compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Predominantly black fruit here with blueberry developing in the glass, there is a slight earthiness in character that shimmies towards floral scents as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and more salinity than then Bonnes Mares or the Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses. It feels crunchy and fresh in the mouth with plenty of blueberry and blackberry towards the long and persistent finish. This is an Outstanding Musigny Vieilles Vignes of substance that will age over 30-40 years. |

Chorey Les Beaune Les Maladerottes ex-Domaine |
$36.99 |
31 |
|
|
WA 88-90 (12/2016): The maiden 2015 Chorey-les-Beaune La Maladérotte has fine focus and purity on the nose, strawberry pastilles and dark cherry fruit, both well defined and demonstrating satisfying vigor. The palate is fresh on the entry with fine, grainy tannin. There is moderate depth here and it feels linear at the moment, though it will gain some flesh post-racking. There is good potential here. BH 87-89 (4/2017): A background hint of wood frames more deeply pitched aromas of plum, violet and plenty of freshly turned earth character. The suave, round and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess good depth and persistence on the balanced finale that stops just short of being rustic. Drink 2019+. |

Dom. Fourrier |
2005 |
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru La Combe Aux Moines Vieilles Vignes |
$299 |
1 |
|
|
WA 92-93 (4/2007): The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines smells of bouillon, game, spices, fresh red fruits and a hint of caramel. In the mouth, it offers texturally more refined and more roasted, rich variations on the meaty, mineral themes introduced by Fourrier’s Les Goulots. For all of its ripeness and chalky, stony mineral density, and marrowy depth, this wine (like its siblings, hovering around a mere 13% alcohol) displays dynamism and lift. BH 91-93 (1/2007): Lower register aromas that feature more earth and underbrush emphases on the otherwise pretty red berry fruit aromas that precede the rich, full and sleekly muscled full-bodied flavors that are wonderfully complex, deep and impressively long. This is unusually stylish for this cru as it offers both style and real punch. Swwet spot Outstanding. Drink: 2014+. VM 91-94 (4/2007): Bright red-ruby. Raspberry, smoke, spices, mocha and gibiers on the scented, complex, slightly exotic nose; this could only be from Gevrey. Chewy and tactile, with tangy berry and spice flavors complemented by sweet oak. Perfumed and quite fine on the very long finish, which features complex spice notes, a distinctly rocky character and superb energy. Very firmly structured wine from a heat trap of a vineyard where Fourrier has occasionally come across snakes. This was unusually aromatic even in the vat, like the '99, noted Fourrier. |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts ETA 90-120 Days (12x750ML) |
$3,013.99 |
1 |
|
|
BH 93 (1/2013): A restrained and discreetly spiced nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that precede the broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors that evidence a sleek muscularity on the long and quite punchy finish. Like any number of prior wines, the flavors and finish are underpinned by extremely fine-grained but dense tannins and while this remains a powerful wine, it is relatively sophisticated by the typical standards of Malconsorts. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes |
$64.89 |
1 |
|
|
BH 89-91 (1/2017): (from a wide mix of Brochon vines planted between 1922 and 1961 that average 60+ years of age.) A pungent nose consists of oak, menthol and reduction. Otherwise there is good vibrancy to the supple yet solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality on the lingering, robust, slightly warm and moderately firm finish. This is very Gevrey in style without being overly rustic. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets ex-Domaine |
$89.99 |

|
BH 92 (4/2017): This is slightly riper than the Chevrets though it remains quite fresh with its aromas of plum liqueur, spice and soft floral nuances. There is exceptional richness to the concentrated, suave and highly seductive flavors that are shaped by a firm lashing of tannin on the ever-so-mildly warm finish. Note that this will require at least some patience. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92 (1/2018): Good full red. More brooding, medicinal aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry, spices and earth, complicated by sexy pepper and floral notes that do not come from stems; much more Pommard in style than the Chevrets, which is situated on the opposite, Meursault side of Volnay. Broad, rich, spicy and deep; this plump yet vinous wine conveys the compelling sweetness of the year with perfectly integrated acidity. Finishes very long and spicy, with horizontal, mouthcoating tannins and palate-saturating sweet and savory elements. Stephen Tanzer. |

Charmes Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru ETA 90-120 Days (12x750ML) |
$6,221.99 |
1 |
|
|
BH 94 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) This is almost as elegant as the Griotte but with a different aromatic profile that runs more toward a slightly darker range of fruit, earth, game and discreet violet notes where there is again plenty of wood influence. There is good refinement to the pure and beautifully detailed big-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long but not especially austere and slightly warm finale. A classic Roty Charmes. Drink 2030+. VM 94-97 (1/2017): Full ruby-red. Very pure but youthfully brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet and minerals. Strikingly sappy and primary, conveying near-painful intensity to its tightly wound black fruit and saline mineral flavors. This complete, impeccably balanced Charmes-Chambertin expands spectacularly on the rising, palate-staining back end, saturating the taste buds and leaving the mouth vibrating. A perfect blueprint for a 25+-year wine. A good portion of these vines date back to the vineyard's original post-Phylloxera graftings in 1881, but as the family has never used pesticides or chemical fertilizers these old vines still routinely yield a healthy crop--35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015. Stephen Tanzer. |

Louis Jadot |
2010 |
Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5 L) |
$299 |
2 |
|
|
BH 93 (4/2013): ( from En Gémeaux; these are the oldest vines of the entire Jadot portfolio of owned vineyards.) This was quite reduced at first and required more than an hour of aeration to finally reveal fresh, cool and mineral-inflected red berry fruit, earth, game, humus and forest floor aromas. There is superb intensity to the almost aggressively stone and beautifully well-delineated large-scaled flavors that possess an extremely firm, mouth coating and driving finish. There is a real sense of underlying tension with an overt austerity to the very serious and stunningly long finish. The En Gémeaux character of pungent minerality is about as front and center as I have ever seen it. I repeat that this is at present one very, very austere wine and there is absolutely zero reason to open a bottle young. However, if you choose to commit wine infanticide of such an egregious nature, give it 4 to 6 hours in a decanter. I believe based on how the wine evolved over several days that it will in time be genuinely excellent as the underlying material is certainly present but this is most definitely a "bury in the back of the cellar and forget you own it" Chapelle. Drink 2030+. |

Chambolle Musigny ex-Domaine |
$69.99 |

|
BH 88-91 (4/2017): Reduction presently dominates the underlying fruit. Otherwise there is both better precision and more minerality if less volume and underlying material to the medium weight flavors that culminate in a linear and youthfully austere finish that offers good if not truly exceptional depth and persistence. Drink 2022+. |

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Aux Echanges ex-Domaine |
$99.99 |
25 |
|
|
BH 90-93 (4/2017): (vinified with 40% whole clusters.) Reduction flattens the fruit but the floral characters from the whole cluster ferment are still discernible. Otherwise there is an even finer mouth feel to the more evidently mineral-inflected flavors that aren't quite as rich as those of the Charmes, all wrapped in a dusty, mouth coating and beautifully well-balanced and slightly firmer finish. These two Chambolle 1ers are quite qualitatively similar but offer two very different expressions. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

Gevrey Chambertin ex-Domaine |
$62.99 |
17 |
|
|
BH 89-91 (4/2017): (from Champ in Brochon.) There are abundant warm earth and sauvage nuances present on the essence of dark berry liqueur-like suffused nose. The brooding, intense and muscular flavors possess very fine volume as well as a discreet minerality that continues onto the serious, persistent and balanced finish. This is sufficiently firmly structured to suggest that most of a decade will be necessary for it to arrive at its peak. Worth a look. Drink 2023+. Outstanding Top Value! |

BH 88-91 (4/2017): More subtle though certainly not invisible wood sets off a pretty nose of plum, earth and lovely violet scents.
