Madrona Ranch Proprietary Blend |
$599 |

WA 98 (12/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch has turned out better out of bottle than it was from cask. An extraordinary expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with ethereal notes of Asian spice, white flowers, creme de cassis, licorice, blackberries, and roasted espresso, the wine cascades over the palate with no hard edges. Extraordinarily pure, rich, and sweet with everything in perfect proportions and integrated impeccably, this is a monumental Cabernet Sauvignon with complexity, finesse, and amazing balance. It should drink well young but keep for 20 or more years. This is a prodigious effort from Napa’s top viticulturalist - a man who has had an enormously positive impact on the quality of the finest wines of Napa Valley. |

Thorevilos Cabernet Sauvignon |
$795 |

WA 99 (2/2005): Abreu’s newest baby, the Cabernet Sauvignon Thorevilos, is fashioned from a vineyard he co-owns with Ric Forman. It is truly monumental, if not immortal stuff. The amazing, virtually perfect 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Thorevilos (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot) boasts an opaque purple color along with a tantalizing perfume of blueberry liqueur intermixed with scents of espresso roast, chocolate, and black truffles. Voluminous in the mouth, revealing flavors of cedar, chocolate, cassis, blueberry, and flowers along with a striking minerality, this full-bodied, opulently-textured 2001 is as good as any red wine can possibly be. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030. |

Thorevilos Proprietary Blend |
$525 |

WA 99 (12/2008): The 2005 Thorevilos comes close to perfection, a beautifully ripe, weighty, but with a European, almost Bordeaux-like structural profile. The sensational nose of acacia flowers intermixed with blueberry liqueur, blackberries, espresso roast, and crushed rock is provocative and intense. The wine is very full-bodied, has a terrific, layered mouthfeel, sensational equilibrium for a wine of such massive concentration, and a staggering finish. This is about as extraordinary a glass of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon as one could hope to find. Drink it over the next 25+ years. |

Tempranillo Lightly Scuffed Label; Bin-Soiled Label |
$75 |

WA 93 (8/2011): The 2009 Tempranillo is impressive. Dark red fruit, flowers and spices come to life in this rich, textured red. The aromas and flavors caress the palate with considerable richness and depth. The finish is long and striking for its purity. The Tempranillo was aged in 80% new barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. VM 91 (10/2011): Deep ruby. Candied cherry, flowers, woodsmoke and cured tobacco on the assertively perfumed nose. Deep, broad and velvety, with impressive depth and sweetness to its cherry and cassis flavors. Picks up spiciness and notes of vanilla and bitter chocolate with air and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering spiciness. I like this wine's balance. |

Fracture Syrah |
$99 |

VM 95 (9/2016): Dark purple. A heady, assertively perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, sandalwood, Indian spices and smoky minerals, and a suave floral pastille topnote builds in the glass. Deeply concentrated yet lively blackberry and boysenberry flavors unfold slowly, picking up allspice, black cardamom and cola nuances on the back half. Shows Outstanding clarity and power on the sweet, supple finish, which is given shape by smooth, steadily building tannins. I've no doubt that this wine will reward patience, but it's awfully delicious right now. Josh Raynolds. |

Fracture Syrah |
$99 |

WA 97 (9/2017): “I want my softest, most textured, rounded Syrah with density and gentle tannins to go into this label,” winemaker Eric Jensen informed me. Produced from 100% Syrah, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Fracture has a vibrant nose of crushed red currants and black cherries with hints of bay leaves, cloves, aniseed and forest floor, plus a touch of roses. Full-bodied and beautifully structured, it has a lively backbone supporting the dynamic fruit, finishing with a beautiful herbal lift. JD 96 (8/2017): Leading off the 2015s, the 2015 Fracture is 100% Syrah that was brought up mostly in new barrels. It’s a classic, elegant Paso Syrah that delivers loads of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spices and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors. A more elegant, streamlined example of this cuvée, it shows the freshness of the vintage, supple tannin and a charming, elegant style that’s a dream to drink. It is already approachable, yet will still be better with another year or two in bottle. |

2013 |
Fulldraw Proprietary Blend |
$79 |

WA 93-95 (8/2014): A new cuvee, the 2013 Fulldraw is a GSM blend of 48% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 17% Mourvedre. While it’s from young vines, you wouldn’t know it by tasting it, and it has a serious, mineral-laced profile to go with full-bodied, richness, incredible purity and lots of finely polished tannin. It should easily be an Outstanding wine and thrill for 5-8 years. |

2012 |
Oublie 24 Proprietary Blend |
$109 |

WA 93-95 (8/2014): Slightly more savory and rich than the straight Oublie release, the 2012 Oublie 24 gives up more bouquet garni, black fruits and ground herbs to go with a full-bodied, fabulously concentrated feel on the palate. It too has a southern Rhone-like feel and should drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully for 7-8 years. VM 92-94 (7/2014): Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, mint, tobacco and cedar are some of the many notes that blossom in the 2012 Oublié 24. Pliant, expressive and nuanced, the 2012 is above all else a wine of pure silkiness. There is a lot to like here. Next to the straight Oublié, the 24 is a bit more seamless, vibrant and perfumed. |

WA 94 (8/2016): Checking in as a blend of 46% Grenache, 34% Mourvèdre and 20% Counoise that spent 24 months in barrel, the 2013 Oublie 24 offers an open, sexy style in its mulled red fruits, dried flowers, spice and dried soil aromas and flavors. Sporting a semi translucent ruby color, this full-bodied beauty has no hard edges, a beautiful core of sweet fruit, and an endearing hard to resist personality that will drink well for 5-7 years. |

2012 |
Remnant Proprietary Blend |
$65 |

WA 93 (8/2014): Getting the remnants from the other cuvees, the 2012 Remnant (which was formerly called the Alchemist) is 35% Tempranillo, 25% Petit Verdot, 23% Syrah and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon that saw the standard 18 months in a combination of new and used French oak. Full-bodied, rich and voluptuous, with some serious texture and depth, it also has superb balance, notable underlying structure and integrated acidity, all of which keep it a joy to drink. Loaded with notions of blackberry, raspberry, smoke, roasted herbs and licorice, this masculine-styled beauty can be consumed anytime over the coming 7-8 years. |

Full-bodied, rich and seductive, the palate is packed with spicy red berry coulis flavors, paved with plush tannins and finishes with loads of layers. |

WA 94 (8/2014): A new cuvee for me, the 2012 RLF (which is named after Eric’s father-in-law, Randy Lee Fannin, who died in a tragic incident in 2011) is a blend of 71% Grenache and 29% Syrah that was aged in a combination of used and new barrels. Tasting like a high-quality Chateauneuf du Pape, it offers perfumed black raspberry, framboise, crushed flowers, lavender and herbs de Provence aromas and flavors. This flows to full-bodied, silky and sexy wine that has impeccable balance, a rounded, supple texture and a great finish. It’s hard to resist now, and I see no reason to delay gratification either. |

2009 |
Cabernet Sauvignon |
$55 |
1 |
WA 93 (6/2015): Another wine that showed significantly better this year, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged 32 months in 40% new French oak) offers slightly more ripeness than the Merlot, with full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, chocolate, toasted spice and hints of oak. Possessing loads of texture, silky tannin and a great finish, it will have 20 years of longevity. WS 91 (12/2015): Firm in texture, with moderately grippy tannins around a broad core of ripe, generous cherry compote, coffee and smoke flavors, finishing with a sense of sweetness. Best after 2018. 1,050 cases made. VM 89 (11/2015): (a multi-vineyard blend): Bright, medium red-ruby. High-toned aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice and black pepper. Still rather bound-up on the palate, showing a restrained sweetness to the black fruit flavors accented by mocha, pepper and herb notes. Savory and deep, with a complicating note of tropical dark chocolate and a slightly roasted quality. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins and very good length. Slightly rustic in an Old World way but I like it. Stephen Tanzer. |

Heart Syrah |
$160 |
1 |
WA 97 (6/2008): The 2005 Heart Syrah is whole berry fermented with aging for 24 months in seasoned French barrels. All of Smith’s wines are fermented with native yeasts and bottled without fining or filtration. It gives off a room-filling bouquet of cedar, leather, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, powerful, and layered on the palate, it conceals enough structure to see the wine through another 6-8 years of evolution. It will be at its best from 2015 to 2030. |

WS 97 (7/2010): A majestic wine, smooth, round and profuse with its blueberry, plum and black currant fruit, nicely wrapped in fine tannins and shaded with hints of white pepper and roasted meat. Big and profound, but not extra-weighty. Complex and beautifully balanced. Best from 2011 through 2017. 500 cases made. |

WS 86 (12/2005): Candle wax and earthy aromas combine with ripe, supple currant and wild berry fruit to give this wine a nice range of flavors. Frediani Vyd. Petite Sirah |
$45 |
1 |
WA 94 (8/2004): The 2002 Petite Syrah Frediani Vineyard comes from a 60-80-year old block of Petite Syrah planted just outside the warmer end of Napa near Calistoga. The color is an inky/blue/purple, and the nose offers up sumptuous aromas of violets, black fruits, crushed rocks, chocolate, and espresso. Enormously endowed yet remarkably civilized for a wine of such mass, it reveals impeccable winemaking along with tremendous purity as well as depth. This is not for readers looking for lighter-styled reds as it is full-throttle Petite Syrah fury captured in a bottle. It should age well for 15+ years. WS 92 (11/2004): Petite can't get any darker-this is a surprisingly sleek and supple youngster, given its level of tannins and fruit concentration. The wild berry, blackberry and loganberry flavors are ripe, rich and vibrant, ending with the tannic muscle you might expect. Drink now through 2012. 256 cases made. |

2009 |
Grand Vin State Lane Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$249 |
1 |
WA 95+ (10/2013): The more closed but potentially greater 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is a 480-case blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by notes of licorice, creme de cassis, camphor and subtle toast. Full-bodied and concentrated, it represents 15% of the total Kapcsandy production. The wine finished with 13.7% alcohol, which in these days is relatively low, although the alcohol levels were down in 2009 through 2011 because of the cooler, less ripe years. VM 95 (5/2012): (includes 3% merlot and 1% cabernet franc): Good bright medium ruby. Spectacular nose offers crushed blackberry, cassis, licorice, violet and minerals complicated by leather and game. Lush, silky and deep, with enticing floral lift for the vintage. Big, powerful but very fine tannins are thoroughly coated by fruit on the extremely long finish. Conveys a somewhat higher-pH mouth feel than the more gripping 2010 version but this vintage may have even riper tannins. WS 93 (11/2012): A substantial effort that weaves together dense, earthy, clay-laced currant, dark berry, sage and cedar. Slow to unfold, but does so gracefully and gets better with each sip. Best from 2013 through 2028. 480 cases made. |

Walla Walla Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon |
$150 |
1 |
WA 96 (10/2001): I could not help breaking into a smile when I tasted the medium to dark ruby-colored 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Its extraordinarily spicy, cherry syrup-scented nose leads to a flavor profile that explodes on the palate with substantial quantities of cherry syrup, raspberry coulis, and Asian spices. Gary Figgins' Cabernets can be as boisterous as Olivier Humbrecht's Gewurztraminers. The purity and power of the sweet, spicy fruit flavors found in this wine are truly extraordinary. Additionally, it possesses an extremely long, candied, sweet tannin-filled finish. This decadent wine should be consumed between 2003-2012. |

Walla Walla Valley Reserve Red Wine |
$150 |
1 |
VM 95+ (11/2009): (a Bordeaux blend based on 75% cabernet sauvignon) Good deep ruby. Brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry and licorice; extremely closed today. Then wonderfully dense, large-scaled and fine-grained, with an edge of acidity giving this broad, plush wine an uncannily vibrant quality in the mouth. As broad and sweet as it is, there's superb energy to the flavors of currant and bitter chocolate. This is still a bit reduced, even youthfully clenched, but should eventually be one of the top cabernets produced in Washington's modern era. The palate-staining finish shows extraordinary chewy persistence, with tannins buried in fruit. (On my July visit to Walla Walla, Chris Figgins showed me a vertical tasting of several of the Leonetti Reserve bottlings, and three wines from the current decade were spectacular: 2000 (93 points), 2002 (93+?) and 2005 (94+?). The '02 displayed great mineral lift and precision and, though delicious already, had the structure for further improvement in bottle, while the '05, still a baby, boasted uncanny sweetness and opulence but also had a distinctly Bordeaux-like black fruit, mineral and licorice character that may be partly due to its 20% petit verdot component.) Bone Rock James Berry Vyd. Syrah |
$159 |

WA 95 (6/2005): A blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache, and 4% Mourvedre, the 2003 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard, which will not be released until the fall, is a structured and broodingly backward offering. It boasts an inky/purple color in addition to classic aromas of blackberry liqueur, camphor, pain grille, and subtle notions of Provencal herbs and pepper. Full-bodied, with tremendous richness, great balance, and sweet tannin, this stunning, marvelously concentrated wine should benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and last for 12-15. VM 93 (8/2005): (15.7% alcohol; mostly from south-facing vines in the highest, rockiest part of the property; includes bits of grenache and mourvedre) Bright ruby-red. Musky, wild aromas of black cherry, gunflint and espresso. Hugely ripe but still youthfully closed following the March bottling. Today this conveys more of an impression of surmaturite than the other 2003 releases and a bit less inner-mouth energy. But this is compellingly rich wine. Interestingly, Smith told me that he blended in a bit of fruit from the lower, cooler parts of the property, from vines harvested as much as six weeks later, and that he intends to do more of this in the future. |

Broken Stones Proprietary Blend Cracked Wax Capsule; Bin-Soiled Label |
$129 |
1 |
WA 94 (8/2010): The 2008 Broken Stones (79% Syrah, 13% Grenache, and the rest Mourvedre) has a bluish purple color to the rim, with the classic nose of camphor, charcoal, black currant, and blackberry with hints of licorice and smoke. This intense wine displays great fruit, some structure, and a beautifully seamless texture. It is more evolved and open than the 2007 was at the same time, and just slightly less profound. It should drink nicely for at least a decade. VM 93 (12/2010): (79% syrah, 13% grenache and 8% mourvedre) Opaque purple. Exotic, floral and spice-accented black and blue fruits on the nose, with hints of fruitcake, vanilla and cola emerging with air. Impressively deep and powerful, offering sweet dark berry preserve and smoky spice flavors and a touch of candied violet. The extremely persistent finish is broad, sweet and penetrating, leaving smoke and spice notes behind. I like this wine's blend of depth and energy. WS 93 (2/2011): An elegant style, rich without being weighty, serving up a mix of spicy dried berry, tobacco leaf, mineral and graphite. This wows you with its finesse and polish, offering subtle flavors that caress the palate. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2020. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 600 cases made. |

$129 |
3 |
WA 97 (9/2016): Tasted just after bottling and a final blend of 58% Mourvedre and 42% Grenache, the 2014 G2 Vineyard comes from a site just to the southeast of James Berry (this was formerly known as Gravity Hills Vineyard) that was planted in the late 1990s. The first release from Justin from this site, this beauty sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous, layered bouquet of cured meats, spice, mulled dark fruits, graphite and loads of this chalky minerality that also emerges on the palate. Rich, full-bodied, ultra-pure and impeccably balanced, this seamless, full-bore beauty will need 2-3 years to really shine, and keep for a decade or more after that. VM 94 (9/2016): Inky purple. Powerful, deep-pitched aromas of ripe dark fruits, violet, incense, Indian spices and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with intense blackberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up and become sweeter with aeration. Extremely young and highly promising; the strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish leaves sappy blue fruit and spicecake qualities behind. Josh Raynolds. WS 94 (2/2017): Distinctive, combining polish with appealing earthiness. Aromas of raspberry, mineral and smoky meat lead to structured and focused flavors of dried cherry, licorice and ground ginger. Finishes with refined tannins. Mourvèdre and Grenache. Drink now through 2028. 625 cases made. |

$95 |

WS 95 (2/2011): Impresses with its finesse, serving up a supple, generous mix of up-front plum, huckleberry and blueberry fruit that's elegant, delicate and polished. Full-bodied, seamless and refined, ending with a long, detailed finish. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2017. 450 cases made. WA 93 (8/2010): The 2008 Heart Stone, a blend of 47% Syrah, 39% Grenache, and 14% Mourvedre, is very elegant but evolved and supple, with beautiful kirsch and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, camphor, pepper, and a hint of lavender. More evolved than the 2007 was at a similar stage, but with slightly lower alcohols, its velvety tannins stand out in this rich, plush, opulent, voluptuously textured wine. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. |

$115 |

WA 95 (8/2009): An unfined/unfiltered blend of 45% Syrah, 38% Grenache, and 17% Mourvedre, aged 32 months in a combination of wood vessels, the prodigious 2006 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red exhibits beautiful sweet creme de cassis, black raspberry, blackberry, truffle, smoke, and herb notes. This spicy, rich, full-bodied effort should drink beautifully for a decade. VM 93 (12/2008): Bright ruby-red. Deeper dark berries and ripe cherry on the nose, complicated by dark chocolate and licorice. The cherry and chocolate qualities build with air and carry onto the palate, adding depth to the sweet blackberry and cassis flavors. Smoother and more dense than the Heart Stone, with a strong finishing jolt of candied licorice and black olive. Really showing its syrah today. WS 92 (3/2009): Pushes the pedal on ripeness, touching on jammy, full-blown and concentrated. Blackberry, graphite, plum jam and wild berry fruit is mouthcoating, as are the tannins. With air, gains a measure of finesse. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2014. 900 cases made. |

James Berry Vyd. Proprietary Blend |

WA 98 (9/2016): The sensationally pure and seamless 2014 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red (42% Grenache, 24% Mourvèdre, 21% Syrah, 8% Counoise and 5% Roussanne) was brought up in a mix of barrels and foudre, followed by six months in concrete tanks. The wine offers incredibly rich and layered notes of black raspberries, creme de cassis, crushed flowers, melted licorice and peppery herbs in its full-bodied, impeccably balanced profile. Showing the more upfront, hedonistic style of the vintage, this full-bodied beauty still has ample underlying tannin, beautiful mid-palate depth and a killer finish that keeps you coming back for more. VM 96 (9/2016): (made with 30 percent whole clusters) Dark purple. Vibrant and sharply focused on the highly perfumed nose, displaying an array of ripe black and blue fruit and floral aromas enlivened by a vibrant mineral quality that gains strength as the wine opens up. The mineral and floral components dominate the extremely long, incisive finish. The balance between power and finesse here is really something. Josh Raynolds. WS 97 (2/2017): A dramatic wine that weds power and opulence, maintaining impeccable balance along the way. Brooding dark berry and loamy mineral aromas lead to rich flavors of currant, licorice, dried sage and smoky pepper. Ripe tannins frame the finish. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise and Roussanne. Best from 2018 through 2028. 1,400 cases made. |

Paderewski Vyd. Proprietary Blend (1.5 L) |
$275 |
1 |
WA 95-97 (8/2016): The 2014 Paderewski Vineyard comes from a warm site located high up off of Peachy Canyon Road (I wasn't able to get the exact blend but it's normally a mix of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Syrah, with a splash of Tempranillo). It offers sexy, full-bodied, broad, rounded and powerful notes of candy corn, black raspberry, chocolate and chalky minerality. The 2014s in general show concentrated, rich profiles as well as broad, supple tannins, and this has both in spades. |

WA 95-98 (8/2013): Coming from dense, clay soils and a blend of 51% Grenache and 49% Syrah, the 2011 Terry Hoage is a ripe, voluptuously textured effort that exhibits rocking purity of fruit, sweet tannin and no shortage of richness or length. Boasting fantastic aromas and flavors of raspberry, cassis, flower oil and licorice, it comes together beautifully in the glass and is one impressive barrel sample. Given the overall texture and richness, I can’t image it not being delicious on release, yet as with most of Justin’s wines, it should have 12-15 years of longevity. Drink 2015-2026. VM 93 (12/2013): (51% grenache and 49% syrah; 15.3% alcohol): Opaque ruby. Highly expressive scents of red- and blackcurrant, cherry, smoky minerals, licorice and flowers. Fresh and precise but deeply concentrated, with sweet red berry compote and cassis flavors, supple texture and an exotic floral pastille quality. Becomes spicier with air and finishes pliant and long, with subtle tannins and a whiplash of peppery spices. WS 90 (2/2014): A rugged blend shaped by firm, drying, grainy tannins, this features a fruit profile of rich dark berry, raspberry and touches of berry jam, with spice and cedar accents. Ends with chewy tannins. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2023. 120 cases made. |

CCS Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon Lightly Scuffed Label |
$395 |
1 |
WS 97 (6/2007): Reveals its depth and complexity in spades, with an initial push of ripe currant, black cherry, blackberry and mocha-laced oak. Intense and concentrated, yet sleek and vibrant, with a tremendous aftertaste that's tight, focused and refined. Drink now through 2014. 175 cases made. WA 94 (12/2006): The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon CCS, which is from Clones 4 and 337, and a blend from not only the To-Kalon Vineyard but also one of the other Beckstoffer vineyards, River Slope in St. Helena, has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful nose of creme de cassis, scorched earth, flowers, white chocolate, and espresso, and loads of fruit. The wine has phenomenal intensity and actually has a texture and complexity more like that of a top Pomerol (which is largely Merlot and Cabernet Franc, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon). Nevertheless, this is a beauty that can be drunk now or aged 15 or more years. It is aged 20 months in 100% new Darnajou barrels. |

Covert Fingers Pinot Noir |
$375 |

WA 95 (8/2006): The knockout, deep ruby/purple/plum 2004 Covert Fingers Pinot Noir exhibits a slightly restrained nose revealing sweet cranberry and cassis aromas interwoven with hints of flowers, charcoal, and oak, a savory, broad texture, and an opulent, voluptuous finish. This beauty should drink well for a decade or more. VM 93 (10/2006): Bright red-ruby. Pure, pungent aromas of raspberry and spices; very pinot! Densely packed, supple and sweet, with pure red berry, spice and earth flavors. Has a thickness of texture while retaining verve. Finishes with fine, supple tannins and lovely subtle length. Not as complex as Krankl's top syrahs, but this is delicious, and as graceful a pinot as I recall tasting from this producer. My sample showed even more intense raspberry and spice flavors the second day, without any loss of freshness. (I must note, however, that my first two bottles were corked.) |

VM 92 (5/2003): Highly nuanced nose combines pear, Cling peach, game, mint oil, spices and caraway seed. Higher-pitched than the Abbott TBA, with brisk acidity and more tangy, compellingly concentrated flavors of apricot, pear and citrus fruits. Finishes with excellent verve and a lingering flavor of dried apricot. Stephen Tanzer. |

Ritchie Vyd. Sonoma Coast Chardonnay |
$115 |
1 |
WA 96 (4/2013): The 2011 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is utterly magnificent. I especially like the way the 2011 is at once unbelievably rich, but not at all heavy. Yellow stone fruit, light floral honey, nectarine and almonds inform the rich, oily finish. The 100% new barrels are imperceptible. All the elements are beautifully in place in this harmonious, voluptuous Chardonnay. This is a great, great showing from Mark Aubert. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. WS 93 (6/2013): Pure, rich smoke, fig, apricot and crème brûlée flavors are deep and persistent in this white, which is slow to open but gains depth, focus, persistence and length, ending with light toasted marshmallow. Drink now through 2018. 1,363 cases made. |

2014 |
Sugar Shack Chardonnay |
$155 |
1 |
WA 97 (10/2016): Another stunner is the 2014 Chardonnay Sugar Shack. This wine, which was harvested August 18, 2014, was one of the earliest picks Mark Aubert had ever done. The wine offers up great fruit, which includes notes of pineapple, green apple, honeysuckle and peach marmalade. It is full-bodied with exceptional purity, lingering across the palate. Drink it over the next 7-12 years. This is the only vineyard for Chardonnay that he has in Napa Valley. VM 95 (2/2016): One of the most flamboyant, exotic wines in this range, the 2014 Chardonnay Sugar Shack wraps around the palate with serious depth and raciness. Apricot jam, honey, candied lemon and white flowers meld together. This is an especially seamless, sweet Chardonnay built on silkiness. Antonio Galloni. |

UV-SL Vyd. Chardonnay |
$119 |

VM 96 (2/2014): Aubert's 2012 Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard, from a site owned by vineyard guru Ulises Valdez, is superb. Apricot, honey, mint, nectarine, butter and white truffles flesh out in the glass. The flavors are remarkably vivid and nuanced, with tons of richness and intensity, but no sense of heaviness. Here, too, the oak is 100% new. Bright veins of underlying salinity and minerality become more prominent over time, adding to the wine's energy and vivid personality. Aubert fans will want to jump all over the UV-SL. WA 95-97 (12/2013): A tour de force in Chardonnay, the 2012 Chardonnay UV-SL was made from an Old Wente clone of Chardonnay. It exhibits copious aromas of mango, pineapple and subtle background wood, a voluptuous texture, beautiful acidity and terrific length and personality. As the wine sits in the glass a structured feel comes forth along with a notion of pears. It should offer delicious drinking over the next decade. WS 93 (7/2014): Deep, rich and persistent, with tiers of elegant apricot, fig, pear, nectarine, honeydew and spicy oak. Finishes with a full-blown yet delightfully graceful finish. Drink now through 2020. 825 cases made. |

Alexander Mtn. Upper Barn Chardonnay Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$275 |
1 |
WA 96 (12/1999): There are nearly 250 cases of the 1997 Chardonnay Gauer Ranch Upper Barn. This wine offers a compelling waxy, honeyed citrus, subtle toasty, lusty nose, followed by a full-bodied, fabulously concentrated mouthful of leesy, multi-layered Chardonnay exhibiting honeyed grapefruit, citrus, and mineral flavors. A powerful, multi-dimensional, long (nearly a minute) finish adds to this Chardonnay's prodigious characteristics. It should drink well for 7-8 years. VM 94 (5/2000): Fuller hazy yellow. Deeper, more exotic aromas of tropical fruits and roasted nuts; quite showy today. Thick, lush and chewy; this has the depth of flavor and three-dimensional texture typical of the Marcassin wines. Closed up in the glass. Finishes longer and stronger than the Lorenzo bottling. Stephen Tanzer. WS 93 (9/2001): A rich, intense, multifaceted wine with layers of ripe and spicy pear, fig, apricot and buttery notes. Long, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2005. 275 cases made. |

1997 |
Lorenzo Vyd. Chardonnay |
$275 |
1 |
WA 95 (1/2000): The 1997 Chardonnay Lorenzo Vineyard is compelling, offering liquid slate/petroleum-like notes. Full-bodied, powerful, and expansive, with laser-like focus, the Lorenzo possesses lemony, peach, apricot, steely flavors crammed into a full-bodied, powerful, impressively concentrated personality. It is simply sensational, so excuse the verbose wine speak. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2007. VM 92+ (6/2000): Hazy, unfiltered appearance. Deep, somewhat reduced aromas of nuts and oatmeal. Large-scaled and rich, with a chewy texture. Pineapple and leesy flavors are supported by sound acid structure. Slightly austere today and built to age. But based on this showing, not as deep or long as some recent vintages of this bottling. WS 92 (9/2001): Wonderful depth, complexity and finesse, with a spicy-earthy-citrusy edge to the ripe fig, nectarine and tangerine flavors. Holds its focus and finishes with a long, lively, honeyed aftertaste. Drink now through 2005. 150 cases made. |

The Hussy Roussanne |
$995 |

WA 93 (2/2002): The 100% Roussanne that emerged from both the Stolpman and Alban Vineyards, is the 2000 Hussy*. The name says it all, but note the asterisks. Our beloved BATF, which protects Americans from illicit thoughts and evil subliminal messages on wine labels, has refused approval of these names. Its light gold color is accompanied by fabulously decadent levels of fruit, luxurious glycerin, and a dry, full-bodied, amazingly well-delineated finish. This is a sumptuous, dry white that is among the most creative produced in California. |
