2017 Dom de Chevalier, Clinet

The Bordeaux machine is (very) slowly creaking into life, and today we have a couple of offerings, starting with Domaine de Chevalier. One of Pessac-Leognan’s most prestigious estates, and probably better known for their white than for the red (though the red has certainly caught up in terms of quality over the past 15 years or so) Chevalier has produced a couple of excellent wines in 2017 - in particular the white. Both appear to offer reasonable value in terms of quality and price, and are recommended. The red was quite structured and firm when we tasted it, but it was definitely a little more restrained than the more opulent preceding two vintages. Some may not like this style, but those who prize elegance over exuberance will find much to like. The white, on the other hand is spectacular no matter how you choose to look at it; it has incredible, soring aromatics that leap out of the glass, while the palate is super fresh and has a firm backbone of acidity and minerals, and a long, energetic finish. The other main release today is for Pomerol mainstay, Chateau Clinet. In addition to the wine being really quite good, the best part about this release is the price - a full 22% down on the 2016. The 2017 has a ripe fruit profile on the nose, while the palate shows quite obvious, yet fine, tannins and the pleasantly grippy finish has good freshness and drive. The fruit is quite forward, but it is not overripe at all, while there is plenty of acidity and tannic structure present in a very well-balanced overall package to suggest that this will reward careful cellaring.
