Ch. Montelena |
2002 |
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon |
$139 |

|
WA 95 (12/2006): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a remarkably rich but still backward red. It will benefit from 5-8 more years of cellaring, and should last for three decades. The full-bodied, intense, dense ruby/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals a closed, reticent bouquet of minerals, creme de cassis, and spice. This rich, full-bodied effort should be going strong 20-30 years from now. VM 93 (6/2005): Good deep ruby-red. Highly aromatic nose combines musky redcurrant and tobacco. Plush, broad and fine-grained; atypically sexy and showy for this wine, in much the same way that Montelena's basic 2002 Napa cabernet is unusually pliant and rich. Finishes with big, dusty, but rather suave tannins. This offers early accessibility but has the material and structure for extended aging. The alcohol here is 14.3%, the highest since the 1978, which was 14.4%. WS 72 (10/2006): Dark-hued, dense and chewy, with earthy currant, blackberry and wild berry flavors, yet also shows a trace of iodine and lead. The tannins are intense, drying and chalky on the finish. Best of three tastings. 7,400 cases made. |

Bosche Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |

|
WA 94 (5/2011): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosche (from that iconic site on the west side of Rutherford planted in gravelly, loamy soils) is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a classic nose of loamy soil, kirsch liqueur, Provencal garrigue, black currants and spice box. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and fully mature with fabulous balance, it is hard to ignore this stunning 2001. The good news is that there were 2,400+ cases made of it from this 22-acre site. It is capable of lasting another 15-20 years. |

Quilceda Creek |

Palengat Vyd. Proprietary Blend |
$119 |

|
VM 93 (11/2012): Good full ruby. Aromas of blackcurrant and licorice. Rich, deep and concentrated, with an almost Kahlua-like liqueur quality to its dense, exotic flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, mocha and orange peel. Very rich blend with an impressively long finish featuring fine tannins and hints of licorice pastille, dark berries, sexy Taransaud spices and black walnut. From vines planted at 3 x 6 feet, according to Paul Golitzin, "about as dense as it gets in this state." (Incidentally, 2006 was Quilceda Creek'Ss last merlot bottling; that fruit is now in the Palengat.)Stephen Tanzer. |

Jericho Canyon Vyd. Proprietary Blend Slightly Depressed Cork; Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$79 |

|
VM 94 (6/2006): Good full medium ruby. Highly nuanced and wonderfully expressive nose combines blue and black fruits and smoky oak. Fat, dense and smooth in the mouth, with superripe but fresh flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, smoke and cigar box. Finishes with big, rich, mellow tannins and lingering notes of coffee and chocolate. A very satisfying 2003 with considerable early appeal but also very good aging potential. WA 93 (12/2005): The 2003 Jericho Canyon, from a 40-acre parcel of vines at the base of Mount St. Helena, is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. This is David Ramey’s homage to Pauillac. With a big sweet nose of white chocolate, creme de cassis, cedar, spice box, and high-quality smoky oak, it is full-bodied, rich, and tannic with notes of chocolate and espresso in the mouth. This wine also needs several years of cellaring and should last 15-20 years. WS 90 (5/2006): Firm, dark and intense, with a rich, concentrated band of anise, currant, blackberry, mocha and light toasty, cedary oak. Very complex and balanced, with a finish that veers to the understated elements of the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2011. 1,700 cases made. |

WA 95 (2/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Estate is a 2,550-case blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. It is aged 20 months in new French oak prior to bottling. This super effort comes across as a Napa version of top-flight Pauillac. Dense ruby/purple to the rim with a gorgeous nose of smoke, cedar, burning wood fires, and creme de cassis, this powerful, intensely rich, complex Cabernet reveals notions of chocolate, charcoal, and blackberry fruit. It should age effortlessly for up to 15 or more years. VM 90 (6/2005): (blended with 9% cabernet franc and 5% each petit verdot and malbec) Medium ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, cedar, loam and menthol, with a whiff of roast coffee. Rich but dry and savory; smooth and aromatic. Subtly complex flavors of currant, lead pencil, cedar, loam and menthol. Finishes with plenty of fine tannins that will need a bit of time to unwind. |

Hayne Vyd. Petite Sirah |

|
WA 93-95 (2/2005): The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. |

Hayne Vyd. Petite Sirah |

|
WA 92-94 (12/2006): Not surprisingly, one of the great Petite Syrahs made in this vintage has again come from the Hayne Vineyard. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. VM 91 (6/2007): Bright medium ruby. High-toned nose shows a porty ripeness to the black raspberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully ripe, sweet and dense, with a plush texture and good inner-mouth lift. Not yet as complex as some past vintages of this wine, but the finish features impressive sweetness and a fine dusting of tannins. |
