WA 92 (8/2013): The 2010 Chianti Classico is a stunning wine that epitomizes the Conca d’Oro amphitheater of vines that distinguishes Panzano in Chianti. The wine shows seamless integration with bright fruit pitted against warmer tones of leather and tobacco. It’s like a perfectly balanced scale with rich intensity on one side and elegant fruit on the other. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. |

VM 94 (9/2020): The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. I loved it. Antonio Galloni. JS 94 (5/2020): A rich, layered CC with intense cherry and flower character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold. WS 92 (10/2020): Ripe black cherry, blackberry, iron, juniper and thyme flavors mark this solidly built red. The balance walks the line between the rich profile and the assertive tannins that deliver grip on the long finish. Best from 2021 through 2032. 7,800 cases made, 2,800 cases imported. WA 91 (8/2020): The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico gives the impression of being slightly mature or advanced, even now straight out of the gate. The hot and dry vintage has shaped aromas of candied cherry, dried plum, rum raisin, white chocolate and a dusty note of wet chalk. The wine is quite beautiful in terms of mouthfeel, with well-integrated alcohol and tannins that close without sharpness or astringency. This dark and sultry Sangiovese shows moderate fruit, focused mostly on dark blackberry and dried cherry. I would recommend a near-term drinking window for this pleasantly rich and accessible wine. |

JS 95 (9/2014): This is so layered and complex with dark chocolate, mineral, wet stone and black cherry character. So much fruit and polished tannins in this wine yet tight and composed. It needs another three to four years to completely open and show what great quality it truly has. VM 94 (9/2014): Black stone fruits, smoke, tobacco, incense and sweet spices jump from the glass in the 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo. The 2011 is going to need a few years for the baby fat to melt away. Today the flavors are ripe, dark and resonant, while the tannins are quite silky, but the best is yet to come. Even with all of its richness, the 2011 clocks in with acidity above 6%, which is virtually unheard of for a wine with this much dry extract, but, then again, we are talking about Sangiovese. WA 94 (10/2014): The plush and ripe 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo shows a Type-A personality with bold nuances of black cherry, sweet espresso and baking spice. It is comprised of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and ages for two years in French barrel (half the wine) as well as two months in large oak cask. The opulence and richness definitely stand out (the label registers 15% alcohol). Sweet tannins and rich extraction make up the finish. WS 93 (10/2014): A thick, powerful and modern style, with cherry and plum flavors and dense tannins. Licorice, leather and spice flavors add complexity while the tannins lend grip on the long, juicy finish. Best from 2016 through 2024. 1,500 cases made. |

VM 98+ (8/2019): The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is flat-out stunning. Rich, ample and seductive, with tremendous intensity, the 2015 will go down as one of the truly epic wines of the year. All the elements come together in a deep, sensual Chianti Classico loaded with class and personality. I would give the 2015 at least a few years in the cellar to shed some baby fat, but it is very clearly a tremendous wine in the making, and even more impressive than it was last year. Wow! JD 98 (6/2020): The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Del Sorbo ratchets up the concentrated richness and the sheer amount of material over the base Chianti Classico. Made from 100% Sangiovese, it’s still not opaque in color but packs an incredible intensity in its black cherry liqueur, new leather, truffle, tobacco leaf, and liquid rock-like minerality. Sangiovese on steroids, yet flawlessly balanced, with loads of ripe tannins balanced by rock-solid acidity and beautiful purity of fruit, this magical Chianti is one for the ages. I love it today with all its baby fat and opulence, yet it’s going to benefit from a solid 4-6 years of bottle age, and I suspect it will evolve for 30 years or more. It’s that good. JS 97 (7/2018): What a nose of clay, earth, crushed stones, rose petals, red licorice, baking spices, tar and Chinese spices. The level of sophistication to the red-fruited core, laser-sharp acidity and polished tannins, which grip and caress the palate, make this the greatest Chianti Classico ever made by Fontodi. From organically grown grapes. A long, long finish. Drink in 2022. WA 96+ (10/2018): The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There's so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. That mid-weight structure, matched to the wine's natural acidity, is a major guarantee of longevity. Bottle production in this vintage is 30,000 units strong. WS 95 (10/2018): (WS #60 wine of 2018) This is concentrated and monolithic, with blackberry and black cherry flavors augmented by tar, tobacco and iron notes. Offers excellent potential, but needs time to absorb the tannins. Powerful, showing fine length. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,800 cases made, 700 cases imported. |

WA 98 (7/2019): The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this iconic vintage. This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. Tar, tobacco and licorice appear as delicate background tones, giving more volume and texture to the wine's sensorial impact. Vigna del Sorbo shows its own precise identity that is fiercely faithful to Sangiovese, but that also pushes the boundaries to go beyond our highest expectations of the grape in terms of color, concentration, aromatic complexity and staying power. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell. VM 97+ (8/2019): The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a wine of tremendous aromatic intensity, freshness and nuance. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and leather, with veins of bright acids that perk things up nicely. Readers need to be patient with the 2016, as it is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. But I have seen this before with Vigna del Sorbo. Sometimes the more reticent vintages turn out the be the most complete and thrilling wines with cellaring. I imagine that will be the case here as well. Antonio Galloni. JS 98 (3/2020): This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2023. |

VM 96+ (2/2014): The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo shows the pedigree of the vintage, one of the very best of the last 25 years. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice and graphite explode from the glass in a wine that comes across as a combination of 2008 and 2010. Sounds pretty good to me. All the elements are beautifully integrated in the glass. A stunning Vigna del Sorbo, the 2006 will drink well to age 25-30, perhaps beyond. Today, though, it is an infant, so further cellaring is advisable. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (2/2014): The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure textural richness. Broad and ample, the 2007 captures the essence of this warm, precious vintage. The aromas and flavors are perhaps just a touch less defined and nuanced than in the best years, but in exchange, the 2007 offers tons of accessibility and of near-term appeal. The 2007 can be enjoyed now or cellared. It is a terrific wine that falls just a bit short of being viscerally thrilling. |

WS 96 (10/2012): (WS #25 wine of 2012). The first impression of this red is purity and finesse, as black currant, raspberry and violet aromas and flavors stay focused and persistent. An earthy leather element and mineral notes chime in on the finish, backed by a vibrant structure. Sangiovese. Best from 2015 through 2032. 5,000 cases made. JS 95 (8/2012): A structured red with polished tannins and subtle vanilla, chocolate and currant character on the nose and palate. Full body, with integrated tannins and a compacted palate. Builds on the palate. Muscular and intense. Needs until 2015 to soften. Try it then. VM 94+ (7/2012): (100% sangiovese): Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of plum, cherry and graphite, with hints of tar and wild herbs. Then sweet but not overripe or heavy on the palate, offering bright flavors of plum and redcurrant. Plenty of soil character and fine-grained tannins on the the multilayered, nicely structured finish. This wine magically combines sweetness, flesh and refinement--no small feat--and is an amazingly pure example of sangiovese. WA 94 (6/2012): The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is a bit of a shock to the palate after 20+ older vintages. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine’s striking purity and finesse. Today the 2009 is a bit of a brute, but it should mellow out over the next 5-7 years as the tannins start to soften. Firm tannins frame layers of ripe, juicy fruit in this young, extroverted Flaccianello. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. |

WA 95 (10/2014): The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I’m not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine’s inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030. WS 95 (10/2014): (WS #14 wine of 2014) Aromas and flavors of violet, black currant, raspberry and spice gain intensity as this red builds to its lengthy conclusion. Vibrant and harmonious, this needs some time to shed its well-proportioned tannins. Sangiovese. Best from 2017 through 2030. 4,000 cases made. JS 95 (9/2014): The blackberry, currant, nutmeg and chocolate aromas follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and lots of savory fruit. Some balsamic and citrus fruit underneath it all. Needs a little time to soften. Pure sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Better in 2016. VM 94 (9/2014): Violets, crushed flowers, licorice, cloves and menthol wrap around the palate in the 2011 Flaccianello. A soft, seamless wine, the 2011 retains gorgeous freshness within the context of the year. Today, the Flaccianello is more expressive than the Sorbo, but it was also bottled two months earlier. This is another wine with off the charts levels of both polyphenols and acidity. |

VM 96 (1/2018): The 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve will probably drink well a bit earlier than the Vigna del Sorbo, as it has more midpalate creaminess, softer contours and a slightly more immediate personality. Even so, the translucent finesse of the vintage is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, chocolate and spice infuses the sweet, creamy finish. The 2014 spent 18 months in oak (less than was once the norm), 80% of it new. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (4/2017): Like the Vigna del Sorbo, the 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve spends a few additional months in botte grande than usual. The wine still breathes in large oak cask, but the environment is slightly more reductive (oxygen-free) compared to smaller barrique, thus allowing for a more complete and slower integration that is necessary in a cool vintage like this. The result is a beautifully complete wine that takes a few minutes to spread its wings. The bouquet starts off with a timid personality, but soon reaches a full regime of red fruit and spice that is so specific to this celebrated selection of Sangiovese from Panzano in Chianti. The September heat (following a gray, soggy summer) helped to eventually achieve fully ripened tannins. There is no greenness or astringency to disturb the soft and velvety mouthfeel. Thanks to severe fruit selection, production of the 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve is one-third less than average. Giovanni Manetti calls 2014 “a vintage of opportunity.” Although Panzano saw less average rainfall in 2014 compared to neighboring villages, Fontodi vineyards required double the work that year. This is an impressive achievement. WS 94 (10/2017): Well-marked by toasty, vanilla-scented oak, this red boasts a core of cherry, floral, tobacco and graphite flavors. Pure and intense, with fine harmony and an aftertaste that echoes fruit and a smoky, minerally element. Terrific length. Sangiovese. Best from 2021 through 2040. 3,500 cases made. JS 93 (8/2017): This is an excellent 2014 with beautiful linear fruit and silky, firm tannins. Full body, tight and bright. A lot of new wood showing now but should come around nicely. Drink in 2019. |
