JD 94 (12/2019): The 2017 Saint Joseph Olivaie is a slightly smaller production release compared to the Silice and is brought up in 15% new French oak. It offers a beautiful bouquet of cassis, crushed violets, and graphite, with a kiss of background oak. It's a more rounded, polished, and textured Saint Joseph that has a touch of modern character, yet never loses its Northern Rhône soul. Drink it over the coming decade. JS 93 (7/2019): The fruit rises to the lead here with attractive blackberries and blackcurrants, as well as ripe plums, earth, wet slate and woody spices. The palate builds such attractively fleshy fruit with a very smooth, succulent delivery of vibrant tannins and a sleek, pepper-dusted, fine-tannin finish. Drink or hold. VM 92 (9/2019): Opaque ruby. Bright and energetic on the perfumed nose, displaying intense dark berry and floral scents that pick up spicy character as the wine opens up. In a juicy, fruit-driven style, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and cherry flavors and suggestions of licorice and candied violet. Finishes very long and smooth, with just a trace of velvety tannins and resonating spiciness. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 95 (11/2020): The 2018 Saint Joseph L'Olivaie is a more serious, concentrated wine offering a touch of background oak as well as impressive cassis and blackberry fruits, full-bodied richness, notes of pepper and Asian spice, building tannins, and a great finish. It shows more minerality and an almost gunflint-like character with time in the glass. It needs a solid 3-5 years of bottle age, but it should see its 20th birthday in fine form. VM 93 (4/2020): Glass-staining ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla and smoky minerals, plus a sexy floral note in the background. Gently sweet and expansive on the palate, offering supple blackberry and cherry compote flavors that show sharp clarity and very good depth. Seamless and focused on the persistent, smoke-tinged finish, with velvety tannins providing framework. 20% new oak. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 96-98 (1/2018): Coming from a selection of Granite terroirs and aged all in new oak, the 2015 Saint Joseph Sensonne offers an incredibly pure, silky style as well as pedal-to-the-metal aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, toasted spice, violets and incense. It's a big, rich, concentrated beauty that's already approachable given its fruit, yet has the depth, balance and purity to keep for two decades. WA 94 (12/2017): A bit of cedar sticks out on the nose of the 2015 Saint Joseph la Sensonne, so give this a couple of years in the cellar to further integrate its 100% new oak treatment. This full-bodied, richly concentrated wine has the mixed berry and cherry fruit to handle it and the tannic structure to age a decade or more. JLL **** (10/2016): Dark red. The bouquet is thick, made up of sweet, near late harvested black fruits, has rich-sweet composition and hints of reduction. The palate links to the nose via its ripe, layered roll of black fruits which go as far as prune from the ripe accentuation. The finish brings in a compact run of tannins that add density and some power. 34 hl/ha this year. From mid-2019 or 2020 to start to get the best out of this. WS 93 (11/2017): A pretty lavender note weaves in and around the core of polished plum sauce and blackberry preserves, while light bay leaf, tobacco and anise accents chime in as well. The sleek, polished finish has an iron echo. Drink now through 2027. 250 cases made. |

JD 96 (12/2018): The 2016 Saint Joseph La Sensonne is brought up all in new barrels, but it's barely noticeable in the wine due to the wealth of fruit and overall balance. Loaded with notions of crème de cassis, spiced blackberries, ground herbs, violets, and pepper, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, terrific intensity, a flamboyant texture, and a great finish. It’s a ripe, sexy wine that needs 2-4 years to shed its baby fat and will keep for a decade or more. It's rocking stuff! VM 94 (4/2018): (all new oak) Bright purple. Smoke-accented black and blue fruits, cola, violet and licorice on the highly perfumed, expansive nose. Appealingly sweet, mineral-accented cassis and boysenberry flavors show superb depth and pick up a sexy floral quality with aeration. Displays impressive detail and mineral lift on the youthfully tannic, extremely persistent finish, which features resonating blue fruit and licorice notes. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 91 (12/2018): Readers looking to understand the style of this estate should snatch up the 2016 Saint Joseph Silice, as it's a classic Syrah that shows both the vintage character as well as the style of the estate. Blackberries, pepper herbs, and plenty of earthy minerality all emerge from this medium-bodied, charming, supple, fleshy Syrah that has sweet tannins and loads of upfront charm. It's ideal for drinking over the coming 4-6 years. This cuvée comes from 30-year-old vines outside of Mauves (which is where the estate is located), was all destemmed, and spent 12 months in barrel. VM 91 (4/2018): Brilliant violet color. Lively, mineral-tinged aromas of fresh cherry and dark berries, smoky minerals and violet. Smooth, sappy and energetic in the mouth, offering gently sweet black raspberry, floral pastille and allspice flavors and a zesty touch of cracked pepper. Shows very good clarity and spicy cut on the floral-tinged finish, which is framed by gentle, harmonious tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 92 (12/2019): The entry-level release, the 2017 Saint Joseph Silice is from a mix of terroirs and is aged a year in a variety of oak barrels. It’s always a good value, and the 2017 is no exception, offering classy notes of black fruits, ground pepper, leafy herbs, and damp earth. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and has the class to evolve for over a decade. JS 92 (7/2019): An impressive syrah with such rich, pure dark plums and cherries, as well as chocolate, black pepper, dark stones, toasted baking spice and licorice. The palate is so silky, really plush, fleshy and open with a very appealing, fresh-fruit finish. Drink or hold. |

JD 93 (11/2020): The 2018 Saint Joseph Silice showed beautifully, with lots of black cherry, currants, peppery herbs, and violet-like aromas and flavors. It's a rich, medium to full-bodied, expansive, spicy Saint Joseph with more fruit and texture than most. I like it today, but it's going to keep nicely for 10-12 years or more. VM 92 (4/2020): Deep, brilliant magenta. An expressive bouquet displays mineral-accented red and blue fruits, along with subtle white pepper, peony and allspice flourishes. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering lively cherry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that turn sweeter with air. Closes with subtle tannins and persistent red berry and mineral notes. Raised in large, neutral oak barrels. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 94 (12/2018): The medium gold-colored 2017 Saint Joseph Paradis Saint Pierre Blanc (95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne) is the flagship of the estate and comes from a steep, south-facing hillside of granite soils outside of Mauves. Sensational notes of buttered citrus, quince, honeyed flowers, and hints of minerality all dominate the bouquet. A richly textured yet elegant white, it has notable minerality, good acidity, subtle background oak, and a great finish. Give it a year and drink bottles over the following 2-4 years. VM 93 (5/2020): Light, bright yellow. Assertive aromas of fresh citrus and orchard fruits are complemented by hints of chalky minerals and pungent flowers. Juicy and deeply concentrated but lively on the palate, offering sappy peach, yellow apple and Meyer lemon flavors that show excellent clarity and minerally drive. The mineral and floral notes carry through the energetic finish, which shows strong, spicy cut and persistence. 20% new oak. Josh Raynolds. WA 93 (12/2018): Bottled a week before my visit, the 2017 Saint Joseph le Paradis Saint Pierre Blanc seemed to be showing no ill effects, as it burst with scents of toast, tangerine and pineapple. This full-bodied blend of 90% Marsanne and 10% Roussanne spent a year in barriques, leaving it rich and textured on the palate yet fresh, balanced and long on the finish. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. JS 92 (9/2017): A rich and buttery nose with spiced almond nougat and fresh lemons and peaches on offer. The palate has a very rich feel with unctuous, mouth-filling flesh and a savory, white-almond and gun-smoke finish. Drink now. |

JD 95 (12/2019): One of the whites of the vintage in Saint Joseph is the 2018 Saint Joseph Paradis Saint Pierre Blanc, which offers a stunning bouquet of honeyed stone fruits, quince, flower oil, and crushed rocks. Rich and full-bodied, with moderate acidity, it has beautiful purity, no hard edges, and just terrific overall balance. It's a rock star of a white from this talented winemaker. I would drink bottles over the coming 5-7 years, but it should evolve for 15-20 years or more. This wine is 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne, all from south and southeast facing, granite parcels, and aged in barrel. VM 93 (5/2020): Limpid straw color. Tangerine, pear, honey, tarragon and pungent flowers on the bright, mineral-tinged nose. Silky and concentrated on the palate, offering bitter pear skin, orange zest and honeysuckle flavors that become spicier and more mineral with air. Finishes with firm grip and strong, mineral persistence, leaving a bitter orange pith note behind. Josh Raynolds. |
