| VM 94 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Bernkasteler Lay Auslese Goldkapsel was made with a small portion of botrytis, around 30%. Candied Mirabelle and white peach are still tempered by aromatic citrus, resulting in a picture of elegance, full of fruit but also of serene, smooth, tempered ripeness that just shimmers with Mirabelle, peach, Meyer lemon and supple, tempered, zesty, balanced sweetness. | WA 94 (4/2017): The 2015 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese (AP 16) displays a very clear, precise and flinty/smoky bouquet of perfectly ripe stone fruits and crushed stones, intertwined with lemon flavors. This Auslese is enormously mouth-watering, incredibly piquant and salty, with an endless flow of lush fruit juice and melting minerals. This is a great Riesling and a digestible, picture-book Auslese. |

The palate is light, with a lovely, smooth, lithe backdrop of sweet mandarin and clementine. The 2022 is tart, sweet, ripe, aromatic and rather serene with just a touch of zestiness. Luscious, creamy peach nectar flavor is nicely framed and accented by a splash of salty minerality. Richer and denser than the spätlese, showing excellent length, but not necessarily much better. | WA 95 (2/2012): The Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese gold capsule A.P. #16 reveals at once implosive density as well as explosive cut and searing intensity such as I can’t recall from any other young Wehlener Auslese at this address. Yellow cherry and kirsch distillate; fresh lemon and apple are laced with piquant apple pip, walnut, vanilla, and lemon zest. Raw energy in its own way at least as elevated as in the corresponding Graacher is here allied to a greater diversity of flavor, including deep notes of caramel and nut oils that well up in a prodigious finish. The floral refinement and already-seductive caress of the corresponding Zeltinger is not what this wine’s about ... or at least, not for another couple of decades, which won’t put it even halfway through what I anticipate will be its total lifespan. Even so, its impossible not to be almost literally carried away by what’s here today. |

| VM 95 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel was designated thus because it was not found typical enough for a Beerenauslese, despite reaching sufficient must weight, it was made with 55-60% of botrytis. Mirabelle jelly and compote shine on the nose, slightly lifted, aromatic, ripe and sweet. The palate brings this to the fore, presenting a lovely, concentrated, vividly fruity, bright core of candied Mirabelle, accompanied by gilded, candied citrus, mouth-watering and tempered, yet so intense. | VM 94 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is shy, but stone fruit shimmers through; think white peach and golden Mirabelle. The palate falls into step with citrus-edged, golden Mirabelle plums, fresh, almost sorbet-like in their heightened impression. The beauty here lies in restraint and absolutely harmonious balance. This is not much sweeter than a Kabinett, just a little fuller, rounder, but still svelte, elegant, full in flavor, light on its feet and medium sweet only. Wonderful. Anne Krebiehl. |
