BH 86-89 (1/2005): (46 year old vines raised in 15% new wood). Elegant and very Chambolle red pinot fruit notes that are ripe but atypically fresh and vibrant for 2003 are followed by rich, sweet, sappy and moderately structured flavors that offer solid length, all wrapped in dusty tannins. This is really quite pretty. Drink 2008+. |

VM 91+ (3/2016): Good deep red with ruby tones. Reticent aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, coffee and minerals, plus a lightly candied quality owing to the small, millerande berries. Juicy, precise and penetrating but not at all dry; densely packed but showing a light touch and lovely energy. Finishes with refined tannins, restrained sweetness and excellent lift, with the wine's salinity stimulating the taste buds. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 91-93 (1/2023): More structured than the Aux Thorey, the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers opens in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, spices, cassis and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish, it will require more patience. BH 91-93 (1/2023): Here the nose is so spicy that blind, it could pass for a Vosne 1er with its aromas of exotic tea, plum and dark berries. The rich, concentrated and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors terminate in a robust and muscular finish that delivers excellent persistence. This moderately austere effort is going to require at least some patience. VM 94-96 (1/2023): The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Aux Thorey, although intuition tells me that with age there will be more fruit intensity here. The palate is fresh and tensile on the entry, again, beautifully sculpted tannins, saline and almost sorbet-like towards the finish that fans out beautifully. This will be quite awesome. Neal Martin. |

BH 93 (1/2005): Sexy, seductive, spicy and elegant. In short, this is everything a great Romanee St. Vivant should be with captivating complexity and endlessly fascinating flavor nuances culminating in a finish that seemingly lasts forever. I could taste this the next day, it was that compelling. As one would expect, this is still in its infancy and while there is plenty of mid-palate extract, this finishes with a wallop of tannins that will require every bit of a decade to resolve plus a touch of wood spice. Terrific. |

WS 91 (12/2005): New oak is still very prominent, wrapped around a core of rich black cherry and plum. It's flashy, yet maintains intensity from start to finish. Though balanced and long, it's wrapped up tightly. Be patient. Best from 2008 through 2018. 75 cases made. |

WA 93-94 (6/2007): The Cathiard 2005 Romanee-St.-Vivant evinces aromas and flavors of ripe cassis and black raspberry, tinged with pepper, clove, star anise, iris, and citrus rind. Lush and enveloping on the palate, with a flattering, creamy texture, this trades a bit of the clarity that other wines displayed here today for sheer richness and ripeness of finish. But the length certainly bespeaks grand cru. VM 91-95 (4/2007): Good bright, deep red. Complex, deeply pitched nose offers black raspberry, coffee and bitter chocolate. Fat, sweet and creamy, with superb density, but not currently showing the verve or clarity of the Malconsorts. Finishes with lovely length and suave tannins, but it's not at all clear today that this is better than the Malconsorts. |

BH 92-95 (1/2009): (from a tiny .18 ha parcel). A kaleidoscopic nose of different spice elements is pure, elegant a airy, combining mostly red berry fruit aromas that are in perfect keeping with the minerally, detailed and impeccably balanced middle weight plus flavors that possess superb length. This is a wine of finesse and Zen-like harmony with a supporting framework of very fine tannins that come across as cashmere on the caressing finish. Drink 2017+. Don't miss! VM 92-94 (4/2009): Good medium red. Red cherry and spicy oak aromas are lifted by rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully pure and perfumed, with superb precision and cut to its fruit-driven flavors of cherry and raspberry. In a more delicate, feminine style than the Malconsorts. The vibrant, impressively long finish offers lovely lingering floral perfume. A wonderfully fresh grand cru. |

WA 95-97 (1/2020): As usual, there are three barrels of Cathiard's 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, a stunning young wine that soars from the glass in a blaze of cassis, violets, orange rind, exotic spices, grilled meats and ripe plums. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and textural, with lively acids, prodigious concentration, powdery structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. BH 93-96 (1/2020): A superbly spicy nose features ripe and very fresh aromas of plum, dark currant and once again nuances of exotic Asian tea. The lilting yet powerful and tautly muscular flavors possess even better density on the impeccably well-balanced finish that flashes a note of bitter pit fruit character. This is quite firm yet the overall impression is a wine of lace and grace. VM 95-97 (1/2020): There are three barrels of the 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru this year, two of them new and the third four years old. This was displaying some reduction at the time of my visit, although underneath there is intense black and red fruit plus a subtle marine influence of oyster shell and seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherries and raspberry laced with blood orange. It feels very tight, a little muscular in style, a Grand Cru that is built for the long term. But will it surpass the spellbinding Malconsorts? Neal Martin. |

VM 90 (4/2011): (bottled in April of 2010): Medium red. Cool aromas of cherry liqueur and crushed stone. Sweet on entry, then focused and penetrating, with savory, saline soil tones currently dominating primary fruits. Finishes structured and long. Quite closed today and in need of four or five years of cellaring. BH 88 (1/2011): An airy, expressive and transparent nose of spicy red berry and floral hints leads to seductive light to middle weight flavors that possess a lacy mouth feel though the tension-filled finish is linear and vibrant. This is light on its feet but does not lack for punch or flavor authority. Drink 2014+. |

BH 90 (1/2012): A mix of wood and natural spice sits atop red and blackberry liqueur aromas that merge into rich, concentrated and pure flavors that happily possess plenty of extract as the tannins are robust and quite firm. This is a relatively powerful effort that isn't an exercise in finesse but it most impressive nonetheless. A big Vosne villages. VM 88+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Reticent but lively aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice and menthol, with some riper notes of mocha and chocolate coming up with air. Juicy but a bit youthfully aggressive; in a rather powerful, chocolatey style for village wine. No shortage of energy here, but this needs time to harmonize in bottle. |

An admirable villages. Drink: 2017+ VM 87-89 (1/2013): Bright red. Floral aromas of red fruits and smoky oak. At once silky and tangy in the mouth, with musky red berry flavors and a full dose of sexy new oak. Finishes with serious, oak-driven tannins. |

BH 93 (1/2008): A subtle trace of background wood frames black and blue fruit plus rose petal and violet-infused floral aromas that are extremely primary, indeed to the point of being borderline backward that introduce wonderfully fresh, vibrant and powerful flavors that are big, robust and well-muscled though not rustic with just superb dry extract on the palate saturating finish that goes on and on. Wow and this has so much potential that it could actually surprise to the upside, just be aware that this is a wine for the patient. Drink 2017+ Outstanding! |

BH 93 (9/2015): While there is a trace of secondary development present on the otherwise very fresh and layered nose that is composed of ripe and overtly spicy black pinot fruit. There is a beautifully seductive texture to the supple, rich, round and strikingly pure mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the impressively long and balanced finish. This is a big yet unusually refined Malconsorts that is sufficiently supple that it could easily be enjoyed now though for my taste it should continue to improve over the next 3 to 5 years. In a word, lovely. Try from 2018+. |

BH 94 (1/2016): ( from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines; Cathiard noted that in 2013 he used a 30 day cuvaison.) A brooding and ultra-fresh nose exhibits notably ripe and strikingly complex aromas of dark cherry and raspberry along with violet, lilac and a gorgeous range of spice elements. This is a big and robust effort with excellent volume and mid-palate concentration that delivers plenty of punch and power on the overtly mineral-driven and hugely long finish. While this will be approachable after only 7 to 8 years it will need fully 15 to reach its full potential. Textbook Malconsorts though I stress that there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to cellar it for at least 8 to 10 years. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright, saturated medium red. Captivating nose combines deep smoky minerality and sexy soil tones. Round on entry, then quite backward in the middle and much less showy than the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers. Today the wine's strong saline, smoky minerality is keeping the fruit in the background. Most impressive on the ripely tannic, very long finish. This will need considerable cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 91 (4/2007): Palish bright red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, minerals and orange peel; this is more like it. Sweet and silky in the mouth, with explosive flavors of raspberry, spices and minerals, and a hint of chocolatey torrefaction. Ripe acids prolong the tangy, spicy finish. Very sexy wine, showing much better today than the Orveaux. BH 90-92 (1/2006): Exuberantly spicy and transparent red and black pinot fruit aromas combine with silky, broad and sweet middle weight flavors that in contrast to the expressiveness of the nose are on the reserved and tight side. There is excellent depth of material with palate staining sap and Outstanding length. This should age and improve for up to a decade but drink well for another one. Outstanding! Drink 2012+. |
