WA 95-97 (6/2003): Chocolate-covered black cherries can be discerned in the viscous aromas of the 2001 Charmes-Chambertin. This huge, medium to full-bodied wine has exceptional depth of fruit. Its personality displays a flavor profile reminiscent of cherry syrup-laced with vanilla beans. Ample, lush, and rich, its stupendous finish reveals waves of fruit and copious, exquisitely ripened tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015. VM 93 (4/2004): Deep ruby-red. Highly complex, soil-driven aromas of minerals, violet, smoked meat, animal fur and iron. Then powerful and perfumed in the mouth, with brisk acids framing the fruit. Possesses a mineral grip that reminds me of Chambertin. Offers a compelling combination of sheer strength and elegance. Finishes very long, with dusty, fine tannins. Impressive, but also harder to taste today than the young 2002. BH 92 (1/2004): Extremely ripe, forward, powerful and vigorous red fruit notes lead to gorgeously detailed, ultra precise, very classy, very full-bodied flavors that just ooze sap and richness on the compellingly long finish. This is a very powerful wine and certainly denser and richer than the Petite Chapelle but not necessarily more elegant or finer. Drink 2011-21. |

BH 92-95 (1/2020): (a blend of one-third Mazoyères and two-thirds Charmes proper - the fruit comes from a mix of mostly 20+ year-old vines and a small percentage of extremely old vines; 60% stems.) Once again there is an abundance of floral influences to the very ripe yet fresh aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and the sauvage. There is copious dry extract that imparts a caressing and seductive texture to the broad-shouldered flavors that are at once powerful yet refined on the firmly structured and youthfully austere finish. This too is a 'buy and forget' wine. Drink 2038+. Don't miss! |

BH 92 (1/2008): (From vines of 50 to 95 years of age situated in Epointures, Combe du Dessus and Les Marchais aged in 65% new wood and vinified with 65% of the stems). A deeply pitched and slightly riper nose of cassis and spiced plum adds nuance to the intensely earthy aromas where the earth character can also be found on the rich, full and voluminous flavors that are almost opulent on the mid-palate yet the finish is borderline austere. This is a very serious effort that has a velvety texture but tightens up quickly on the backend due to the buried structure. Terrific potential here in a "built for the long haul" package that delivers amazing quality for its level. Drink 2015+. Outstanding! VM 92 (4/2008): Saturated ruby-red. Superripe nose dominated by smoky oak, roasted dark fruits and chocolate. Big, rich and chocolatey, with surprising mineral lift and shape to the black fruit flavors. Finishes with big, broad tannins. I'd give this one seven or eight years of cellaring, or a few hours in a decanter. This fruit was picked late, but the potential alcohol was still a reasonable 13.3%. WA 91-92 (4/2007): From largely 50-year-old (but some ancient) vines in parcels north of town, below Mazis, and along the route nationale, the 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roi offers striking bitter black fruit concentration and marrow-like meatiness. Low-toned cassis, blackberry, black chocolate, marrow and wet stone inform a finish of striking purity and persistence, albeit in a rather somber key and wearing its extract, abundant if fine tannins, and new wood in rather obvious fashion. The rather monolithic impression on this occasion might ultimately prove deceptive. Certainly this wine’s sheer raw intensity suggests a decade or more of cellaring is warranted. |

WA 90-92 (6/2004): Licorice, tar, roasted black fruits, dark cherries and wax make up the aromatic profile of the dark ruby-colored 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles. Medium to full-bodied, exhibiting superb concentration and depth of fruit, this wine reveals copious quantities of wild herb laced dark fruits in its powerful personality. Its lengthy finish displays loads of wonderfully ripe tannin. Drink it between 2007 and 2015. VM 89-92 (4/2004): (from a crop level of just 21 hectoliters per hectare, according to Dugat; aging in all new barrels) Deep ruby-red. Explosively fruity nose dominated by black raspberry. Supple, sweet and creamy, with a minerality that frames the wine's dark fruit flavors. Shows terrific inner-palate energy, and the thoroughly ripe tannins that characterize Dugat's 2002s. BH 88-91 (1/2004): This is more elegant aromatically with a lovely hint of minerality to complement the earthy, slightly gamy notes leading to supple yet incredibly dense, wonderfully pure and beautifully textured flavors plus a powerfully long finish. Fine balance and superb overall quality for a villages level Gevrey. Drink 2009-2017. Outstanding! |

Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru |

BH 95 (1/2009): Deeply colored. A completely different expression compared to the Charmes as here the nose is very gamy with notes of underbrush, leather, spice, smoke and dark berry fruit that is in keeping with the intensely earthy, textured, pure and serious sleekly muscled flavors that are powerful and more obviously structured if also slightly rustic and animale in character while finishing with moderate austerity. This offers a distinctly different personality and trades the greater refinement of the Charmes for more size and weight. A qualitative choice of two wines with very different personalities. WA 94 (12/2009): The Dugat-Py 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin displays resinous and high-toned herbal concentrate notes that tend to signal one's approach to Morey-St.-Denis. (These vines are younger than those neighboring and incorporated into Dugat's Charmes.) Concentrated, lightly-cooked plum and blackberry mingle with Szechuan pepper, sassafras, peat, and licorice on a sappy, pungent, firmly tannic palate. Where around 75% of the fruit was destemmed for the Charmes, here only half was, and that probably helps enhance the pungency this fruit exhibits, as well as perhaps the overall level of tannin. This is going to want 4-5 years in bottle before it makes sense to revisit, by I would expect at least 6-8 years of impressive performance thereafter. |
