VM 91 (11/2015): Bright ruby-red. Musky dark berries and pipe tobacco on the nose and palate. Plush, sweet and nicely concentrated, showing a very suave texture and noteworthy definition to its deep berry flavors. Finishes with very smooth tannins and excellent length--surprisingly mellow and sweet for this very cool vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 96 (10/2016): The Cappella, which usually has at least 35-30% Cabernet Franc in it, looks absolutely fabulous now that the 2013 Cappella is finally in bottle. They only made about 206 cases of it, so it’s a small cuvee from this vineyard on the back streets of St. Helena. It displays sweet espresso notes, loads of white chocolate, blackberry, Asian spice and incense. It is full-bodied and opulent, with the tannins surprisingly silky and well-disguised, which is somewhat unusual in this vintage of extraordinary power and density. This is a 35- to 50-year wine. |

WA 94 (10/2016): Both 2013s are clearly the finest Eisele wines made under the administration of François Pinault and his top lieutenant, Frederic Engerer, who also runs the show at Château Latour. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia is a beauty. Dense, opaque purple, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with forest floor and violets is followed by a lush, medium to full-bodied wine with terrific concentration, light tannin and an approachable style even for a 2013. It should drink well for 15 or more years. JS 95 (1/2016): Glorious aromas, like walking into a flower shop, from roses to lilacs. Lots of dark fruit too. Then goes to slate and dark mushroom. Full body, super refined tannins and refresh and ultra-clean finish. A thoroughly balanced and refined wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, 6% petit verdot, and 4% malbec. So delicious to drink now. |

Rarity Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5 L) |

VM 95 (1/2022): Here in its first release, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rarity is a new flagship bottling sourced from BV's iconic #1 and #2 ranches. The blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot yields a wine of tremendous depth and concentration. Dark fruit, leather, tobacco, lavender, espresso and mocha all build in the glass. It is interesting to taste the 2013 next to the 2016, as it was done at a time in the estate's history when concentration and heavy extraction were more central to the winemaking philosophy than they are today. Give this a few years to come around. Bottled only in magnums. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 98 (5/2023): The clear standout in 2017 is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The G.T.O., a deeper, richer, incredibly impressive wine from a challenging vintage. As always, a blend of the three parcels, this deep purple-hued beauty offers a full-bodied, rich, concentrated style as well as beautiful cassis and darker fruits, some complex notes of iron, violets, white pepper, and flowery incense, perfect tannins, and an expansive, layered, opulent profile that's hard to find in this vintage. It's an incredible wine. WA 97+ (10/2019): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The GTO springs from the glass with bold crème de cassis, blackberry pie, preserved plums and cigar box scents with hints of incense, underbrush, Chinese five spice and tree bark. Big, rich, opulent and full with firm, grainy tannins and bags of spicy black fruit, it has a velvety texture and long, layered finish. |

WS 87 (7/2015): Tannins hold the upper hand in this dusty, savory, cedar-laced effort, overshadowing the core of juicy dark berry, licorice, cassis and kirsch. Should be more complete in a year. Best from 2016 through 2027. 2,700 cases made. |

High Contrast Vyd. Syrah |
$115 |

JD 95+ (4/2020): The 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard is more wound up and tight, with backward notes of chocolaty black fruits, toasted spice, mulled plums, cured ham, and sweet mulch all developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with plenty of tannins, this is one 2017 that’s going to reward bottle age. Do your best to hide bottles for 4-5 years if possible, and it should see its 20th birthday in fine form. This is certainly for those who like a big dose of funk in their Syrah! |

JD 96 (4/2020): There’s no mistaking the Rocks origin of the 2017 Syrah Sur Echalas Vineyard. This beauty is just about overflowing with dark, meaty plum and blackberry fruits intermixed with lots of mulch, bacon fat, violets, and leafy herbs aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied and textured, its core of sweet fruit emerges with time in the glass, and it has ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s one of the more approachable vintages from this label, yet 2-3 years of bottle age are still advised. |

The Tribe Vyd. Syrah |
$135 |

JD 97 (4/2020): Beautiful notes of red and black raspberries, tobacco, plum sauce, loamy earth, and loads of floral notes emerge from the 2017 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard, another tight, closed wine that’s going to benefit from bottle age. Medium to full-bodied, with notable freshness as well as plenty of underlying structure, it reminds me of Cote Rotie from the Cote Blonde lieu-dit with its incredible floral character as well as its seamless texture. Beautifully done and one of the standouts in the lineup in 2017, give bottles a healthy decant if drinking any time soon, and my money is on it benefiting from 2-3 years of bottle age and evolving for 15-20 years or more. WA 96 (8/2020): The 2017 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard begins with a firm, tight nose of rustic dark red fruit and soft aromas of worn leather, black spice and dust-covered violets. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is still tight in its youth, but it remains approachable and food-friendly now. The wine has a bolder mouthfeel than the rest of the range and is balanced with firm tannins that will ensure it will last for years to come. It concludes with a long, drawn-out finish with an essence of dark red fruit and a soft, lingering spiciness. VM 94+ (12/2020): Bright full red. Pure but subdued nose hints at blackberry, black pepper, violet and menthol. In a very dark, juicy, savory, tight style; reveals a sexy hint of sweetness but quite bound up today and in need of time to soften. Peppery black fruits are complemented by a subtle floral character, which makes this wine livelier and more delineated than the High Contrast Vineyard Syrah. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and rising violety length. This beauty has the most mid-palate energy and the most explosive length of Horsepower's trio of new Syrahs but is quite backward and in need of patience. Outstanding potential here. Stephen Tanzer. |

Wraith Cabernet Sauvignon |
$650 |

JD 98 (12/2023): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith is always a barrel selection with the idea being to show the vintage as opposed to a single site. It's slightly more focused and elegant in style, with a beautiful bouquet of darker currants, leafy tobacco, baking spices, and chocolate. This flows to a full-bodied, layered 2019 with ripe, velvety tannins, perfect ripeness, and flawless overall balance. WA 98 (5/2023): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith is a subtle amalgam of the three single-vineyard wines, showcasing a faint herbal streak, mixed cherries and cassis fruit, with deep undercurrents of loamy earth and cigar box shadings. Full-bodied, plush and creamy-textured, it finishes long and velvety. Just luscious stuff—good luck keeping your hands off it! |

Reserve Red Wine |

VM 93 (8/2017): What a delight it is to taste Kerr's 2013 Reserve Red in such great shape. Dark, powerful and structured, with forbidding tannins that are going to need time to soften, the 2013 is terrific. A host of espresso, mocha, leather, licorice and cedar infuse a core of dark fruit in this imposing yet expressive red blend. All of the class of this great Napa Valley vintage comes through a highly expressive yet mid-weight wine. I suspect the bottle I tasted last fall was flawed, as this bottle is on another level entirely. Antonio Galloni. |

J Daniel Cuvee Proprietary Blend |
$265 |
4 |
WA 99+ (10/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvee is probably the qualitative equivalent of the 2012, but slightly more backward and coiled tight. Coming from three vineyards that Robin Lail uses in Napa Valley: one in Calistoga, one in Oakville and the other on Howell Mountain. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in about three-fourths new French oak. Just under 1,000 cases are produced. The 2013 comes across like a Napa version of the famous Château Montrose in Bordeaux’s St.-Estephe. Earthy notes intermixed with chocolate, blackcurrant liqueur, grilled meats and spice are all present in this opaque purple wine. Graphite and floral notes are also present. It is full-bodied and ripe with beautiful purity and superbly integrated acidity, alcohol, wood and tannin. This wine needs another 4-5 years, as it’s less dramatic and flamboyant compared to the 2012. It should evolve and age beautifully for 30+ years. |

Estate Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon |
$275 |

WA 98+ (12/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Family Reserve has a dense, opaque, black/purple color, enormous extract and massive fruit, full-bodied power and stunning purity and depth. Readers are often too young to remember what some of the great classics of the late 1960s and 1970s tasted like, particularly the Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignons of 1968-1974. Well, I bought those wines, and tasting these Meteor Vineyard wines reminded me of their super-richness and almost overwhelming extract and power. This is another great achievement, but a real connoisseur's wine in that it's going to take 8-10 years to come around and last 30-40 years, if not longer. VM 96 (8/2017): Creamy and dense, with plenty of tannic spine in support, Meteor's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely gorgeous. Bittersweet chocolate, espresso, menthol, licorice grow as the 2013 saturates every corner of the palate. Exotic spice, flowers, wild cherry, leather and espresso infuse the unctuous, inviting finish. The 2013 Family Reserve is a big wine, but all of the elements are impeccably balanced. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (3/2017): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stuffing and potential here. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 96 (1/2020): More black fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and earthy notes emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS, but it’s a similarly textured, sexy, opulent wine on the palate. All Cabernet aged 20 months in 95% new French oak, this full-bodied, concentrated 2017 has terrific tannins, a balanced, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It too is destined for 15-20 years of prime drinking. |

Audentia Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 95 (3/2016): Another extraordinary wine is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Audentia. This is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Petite Sirah aged 20 months in a combination of new and neutral French oak. A very expensive wine, there are only 638 cases of it; this is meant for long-term cellaring for collectors. Notes of tobacco leaf, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee and spring flowers all jump from the glass of this powerful, rich wine that is singular in style and character. |

WA 94+ (12/2016): A super selection of their best Cabernet Sauvignons includes the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Audentia Estate. This is a beauty, a classic example of this vintage, with sweet tannin (and lots of it), intense, full-bodied, concentrated fruit, blackcurrants and blackberry, some licorice, camphor and a long, long finish. This is another long-distance proposition to be put away for 4-5 years and drunk over the following three decades. |

The Vineyardist |
2012 |
Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon |
$169 |
5 |
WA 96 (10/2014): The compelling 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from Clones 7, 33 and 337. It’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in a combination of 50% new Darnajou and the rest Taransaud. The wine hit 15.1% natural alcohol, and 285 cases were produced. This is a great mountain-style Cabernet Sauvignon with an inky purple color, a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, wet gravel, charcoal, blackberry and crème de cassis. Very full-bodied and exceptionally pure and deep, this is multidimensional with skyscraper texture in a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon that is still young with tremendous upside. It can be approached now because it’s very much in keeping with the style of 2012, but five years of bottle age will do wonders, and I expect the wine will still be going strong in 25 or 30 years. VM 95 (5/2024): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon marries the richness favored by winemaker Mark Herold with the more restrained style of the year. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that is maturing into a delicate, elegant wine. Red-toned fruit, graphite, blood orange, rose petal and mint are some of the signatures. There's terrific freshness, and also a bit less textural opulence than most wines made here during this period. The 2012 is beautifully done. Antonio Galloni. |
