BH 93 (10/2005): Big, strapping, explosive aromas of black fruit, earth and notes of blueberries all trimmed in a touch of wood toast lead to sappy, full-bodied, rich, wonderfully intense, powerfully structured flavors that go on and on. Exceptionally dense for the vintage with dusty structure and superb balance which should permit it to age for years. Consistent notes. Drink 2010+. VM 93 (4/2004): Saturated ruby-tinged red. Complex aromas of black fruits, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, dense and sappy, with a deep core of spicy fruit. Seems less closed today than most of Roumier's other 2001s owing to its absence of hard edges. But this very serious, thick wine really needs five or six years of bottle aging and should last well. Finishes with terrific persistence. WS 92 (5/2004): Wonderful, both structured and rich, with wild berries, raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied and tannic, but approachable, as the tannins are well-integrated. Wet earth and mineral complexity on the lingering finish. Best from 2006 through 2012. 500 cases made. WA 89-91 (6/2003): The medium-bodied, medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Bonnes Mares is an Outstanding wine. It explodes from the glass with candied black fruit aromas and slathers the palate with its deep, suave, violet-laced jammy blackberries. Armed with first-rate depth of fruit, this friendly, silky-textured offering displays a long finish packed with ripe tannin enveloped in black cherries. Projected maturity: now-2010. |

VM 96 (9/2018): The 2002 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a wine that I have met for five years. Examining my previous note, this seems to have meliorated in recent years, displaying outstanding transparency on the nose, more mineralite than the 2002 Les Cras poured alongside (also blind). Perhaps there is a little more black fruit here than I was expecting. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful structure: filigree tannin, pitch-perfect acidity and superb tension from start to finish. There is a hint of balsamic towards the finish that I remarked upon a few years ago, but overall this is a wonderful Bonnes-Mares that unfurls with each passing moment in the glass. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in Hong Kong. Neal Martin. BH 95 (4/2007): The nose hasn't budged an inch since my original review in-bottle review and rests entirely in the red fruit spectrum and rather than spice, there is an intense floral and violet quality followed by detailed, ultra pure and tautly muscular flavors that deliver real punch and a lovely minerality on the incredibly long backend. A complete and seamless wine of enormous complexity and considerable underlying reserve plus enough structure for at least three plus decades of life. A great effort that is even better than I originally thought it could be from cask and because it appears to be evolving at a snail's pace, I have extended my initial suggested drinking window accordingly. WS 97 (6/2005): A beautiful red, dense and broad, with concentrated black cherry, plum and mineral flavors. Shows an old-vine richness and is backed by a firm structure, with ripe, fine-grained tannins. Fine length. Best from 2012 through 2025. 500 cases made. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin. BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

BH 95 (1/2016): (from several parcels totaling 1.5 ha that are roughly divided between .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines; in 2013 the final blend is approximately 55% terres blanches and 45% terres rouges.) This is quite floral with plenty of earth and assorted spice elements adding interest to the very fresh mix of green tea and red and dark berry fruit scents. There is outstanding power and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess a robust mouth feel and ample minerality, all wrapped in a moderately austere and hugely long finish. This is a big, indeed even opulent but balanced wine that is clearly built for longer-term cellaring. Drink 2030+. WS 95 (5/2016): This is all about finesse, with the racy profile and silky texture setting the stage for cherry, bilberry and mineral flavors. Sleek and well-integrated at this stage, yet with dense, ripe tannins that need to be absorbed. Builds to a long, ethereal aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2035. 65 cases imported. VM 94+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Knockout high-pitched aromas of red berries, peony and orange peel. Boasts compelling subtle density and sharp definition to its taut flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice, spices and minerals. In its juicy sappiness, this is like chewing on a ripe cherry. A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 87-89 (1/2020): An attractively fresh and ripe nose displays layered aromas of plum, black cherry and a whiff of earth. There is fine detail and underlying tension to the solidly concentrated flavors that, for a wine of this level, offer unusually good depth and persistence that flashes only a trace of rusticity. |

BH 88-90 (1/2016): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees.) This is also quite fresh with its more elegant array of red and blue pinot fruit, rose petal and soft spice nuances. There is excellent delineation to the vibrant and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the saline and linear finale. Drink 2020+. |

BH 92 (1/2012): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age) This is also ripe but definitely fresher with lovely purity to the enveloping red pinot liqueur-like aromas that are trimmed in both spice and mineral nuances. The detailed, intense and stylish medium-bodied flavors brim with plenty of dry extract, all wrapped in an explosive, focused and lingering finish. A ripe but still classic Les Cras that is really quite classy. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

WA 92 (2/2014): The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras has blacker and earthier fruit compared to the village cru, but here there is more volume and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly grainy tannins. There is lovely balance here: a little more forward than I was expecting, but generous with impressive complexity on the finish. This forms a fine introduction to the delights of Christophe’s wines. Drink 2016-2030. VM 92 (4/2014): Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins. WS 91 (8/2014): A broad, rich style, sporting violet, black currant, black cherry and spice flavors. The structure is both vibrant and firm, showing fine balance and grip on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2030. 35 cases imported. BH 91 (1/2014): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age). A gorgeously perfumed and intensely floral-suffused nose evidences hints of stone, red berries, anise and a bit of earth. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the precise, dusty and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating, linear, mildly austere and highly persistent finish where a saline nuance appears. This is quite good. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2016): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) Firm reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background though it does seem ripe. There is more volume and certainly more punch to the overtly stony medium weight flavors that possess outstanding delineation before terminating in a youthfully austere, saline, focused and relatively power finish that offers impressive persistence. Textbook Les Cras. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

BH 93 (1/2019): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) Here too there is a background hint of wood framing the super-fresh if cool and restrained aromas of liqueur-like red cherry, rose petal and subtle spice whiffs. There is excellent concentration to the succulent yet well-detailed and intensely mineral-inflected flavors that are blessed with plenty of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm core of tannins shaping the beautifully persistent finish that also flashes a suggestion of warmth. This is terrific and should age gracefully yet the copious level of sap should permit it to drink reasonably well young too. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

WS 95 (5/2020): A well-defined red, with great focus and precision to the black cherry, black currant, violet and stony, mineral flavors. Ends with a chalky sensation, lending gravitas to the finish and overall impression. Best from 2023 through 2045. VM 94 (2/2021): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a dreamy bouquet that gushes with brambly red berry fruit, redcurrant, cranberry and, to be exact, Tiptree “Little Scarlet” strawberry jam, all beautifully defined. The palate is plush, velvety smooth, very refined with pitch perfect acidity. This Les Cras displays admirable depth, moving into more red Morello cherry and light allspice notes towards the delicate and yet persistent finish. Iron fist/velvety glove and all that... This is a brilliant Chambolle-Musigny from Christophe Roumier and it soared even higher the following day, gaining more nuance and filling out further on the finish. Neal Martin. |

WA 91 (10/2005): Earthy, relatively elegant nose of dark fruits and a touch of underbrush merges with medium weight, nicely precise, punchy flavors of good depth and extract if not necessarily great density or power. This is a relatively elegant wine of obvious class and only a touch of the youthful aggressiveness and austerity of young Clos Vougeot. I would suggest holding this for another 3 to 5 years and drinking up over the next 10. |

BH 92 (1/2013): I have never been a huge fan of this wine as I often find it to be somewhat coarse, and while always very good, I am rarely moved by it. However, in 2010, as was the case in 2009, this is much better than it usually is with a relatively perfumed nose that includes notes of earth along with the natural sauvage character of the vineyard. In fact there is even a certain elegance to the attractively layered airy and cool red berry liqueur aromas. There is good richness and fine volume to the moderately robust and muscular flavors that culminate in a balanced and linear finish that evidences mild austerity. I quite like this as the tannins are finer than usual and there is a real sense of harmony and completeness. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! WS 92 (6/2013): Starts out tight, with currant, kirsch, spice and earth flavors. Rounds out with a few hours of aeration, offering black cherry and tobacco notes. Balanced, displaying a firm finish for now. Best from 2016 through 2028. 170 cases imported. VM 91+ (4/2013): Good bright, deep red. Briary dark berries, black cherry, menthol and a smoky nuance on the nose. Rich and quite ripe, with deep dark berry and smoke flavors perked up by mint and minerals. At once dense and agreeable for this cuvee. WA 90-92 (2/2012): The 2010 Morey St. Denis Clos de la Bussiere is an explosive wine. Dark red cherries, freshly cut flowers, graphite and mint all take shape in the glass. The Clos de la Bussiere stands out for its energy, focus and length. Persistent saline notes add freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. |

BH 91 (1/2014): (a monopole of the domaine) A high-toned and attractively layered nose mixes notes of red and black cherry with earth and humus nuances. There is excellent detail and punch to the equally mineral-tinged medium-bodied flavors that possess relatively refined tannins that are notably finer than usual, all wrapped in a harmonious and solidly persistent finish. I like the fruit/acid balance and this should age well over the medium-term. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

BH 91 (1/2018): A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of dark currant, earth, underbrush and discreet humus nuances. There is fine richness and plenty of punch to the more voluminous and once again solidly concentrated flavors that are shaped by surprisingly sleek tannins on the firm, highly complex, lengthy and impeccably well-balanced finish save for a trace of warmth. This firm and dusty effort will need all of a decade to shed its core of tannins and become more user friendly. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |
