Peter Michael Chardonnay
Following on form our successful offer for Peter Michael's reds the other day, today we are featuring a fine selection of his whites in both bottles and magnums (there are also a few bottles of Sauvignon Blanc available). Peter Michael founded his eponymous winery in 1982 in Knights Valley with the singular vision to make terroir specific wines in the mold of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Since then, the Peter Michael Winery has become a California icon and is among the most well-regarded producers in California. What began with the Bordeaux blend Les Pavots and Clos de Ciel Chardonnay, has since grown to production of 15 wines, 14 of which are from single vineyard sources. The offer below features verticals of Belle Cote, La Carrieres, Ma Belle-Fille and Mon Plaisir Chardonnays, plus two vintages of the very appropriately-named L'Apres Midi Sauvignon Blanc. Happy Hunting!

Belle Cote Chardonnay |

VM 92 (5/2012): Hazy yellow color. Candied orange and pear on the pungent, intensely perfumed nose. Lush and creamy on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering palate-staining citrus and pit fruit flavors with complicating notes of honeysuckle and chalky minerals. Finishes broad and chewy, with excellent thrust and lingering spiciness. The most exotic of this set of chardonnays today and the one that I would drink first. WS 92 (7/2012): There is much to admire in this complex mix of anise, fig, citrus, tangerine, hazelnut and melon flavors. The texture is what separates the 2010s, and here it is a bit raw and coarse. The intense finish shows a dash of smokiness. Needs time. Best from 2013 through 2020. 1,915 cases made. WA 91-94 (2/2012): The 2010 Chardonnay Belle-Cote is a gorgeous, symmetrical wine with no beginning and no end. Sweet floral notes, licorice, mint and lemon are some of the nuances that emerge from this textured, graceful wine. The finish turns intensely aromatic and expressive. Here, too, there is considerable weight in the glass. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. |

Belle Cote Chardonnay (1.5 L) |
$309 |

|
WA 98 (10/2016): The 2014 Chardonnay Belle Côte has similar white peach, crushed rock, crème brûlée, tangerine oil and orange marmalade notes. Like its younger counterpart in 2015, it is about as close to perfection as a Chardonnay can achieve. Both have a good ten years of upside. And the super-rare and luxurious cuvée of Point Rouge is largely a barrel selection from the Belle Cote cuvée. |

Cuvee Indigene Chardonnay (1.5 L) |

|
VM 95 (6/2011): Greenish gold. Pungent aromas of dried pear, lemon pith, saffron and smoky lees, with slow-building minerality and a touch of peat. Densely packed but energetic, offering lively orchard and citrus fruit flavors and an exotic floral quality. The peaty note resonates strongly on the finish, which hangs on with impressive tenacity. For all its power, this chardonnay conveys a sense of weightlessness. WA 94 (2/2012): The 2009 Chardonnay Cuvee Indigene is a totally seamless wine graced with endless layers of apricots, peaches, white flowers and spices, all of which come together beautifully in the glass. The substantial weight of the old Wente clones blast through on the fat, creamy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. |

La Carriere Chardonnay (1.5 L) |

|
WA 95 (10/2017): The 2015 Chardonnay la Carriere opens with a seriously intense nose of ripe peaches, lemon curd and grapefruit peel with hints of nutmeg, acacia honey, orange blossoms and buttered toast. Medium-bodied, very fine, fresh and elegant, it has a lively backbone lifting the citrus and savory flavors, finishing long and minerally. 1,946 cases were made. |

JD 96 (6/2018): The 2016 Chardonnay La Carrière comes from volcanic ash soils which aren't too common in Knights Valley. It offers terrific notes of white peach, white flowers, oyster shell and undeniable minerality. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and elegant, it has beautifully integrated acidity, a silky, classic texture, and a great finish. This is mostly Hyde clone. |

Ma Belle-Fille Chardonnay |

|
WA 99 (12/2014): The 2012 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille reveals notes of citrus blossom, Mandarin oranges, tangerine oil, white peach, pineapple and a wet rock-like minerality. This full-bodied, opulent, exotic, stunningly classic Chardonnay should drink well for a decade or more. The good news is that there are 2,105 cases. VM 93 (5/2014): Green-tinged yellow. Vibrant aromas of lime, anise, chalky minerals and honeysuckle show impressive clarity and a hint of iodine. Firm, tightly focused and dry, offering mineral-driven citrus and orchard fruit flavors and complicating ginger and quinine nuances. Finishes racy and pure, with strong, clinging mineral and citrus zest flavors. |

WA 94 (12/2015): The 2013 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille offers plenty of wet rocks, caramelized citrus, and again the apple blossom component -- or is it apple butter? There is a lemon meringue character as well, not to mention brioche. It is definitely different than the other Chardonnays, and it certainly seems as though the Calera clone component comes across very differently. |

|
WA 92 (12/2013): Made from an Old Wente selection that is believed to emanate from the steep hillsides of Corton-Charlemagne, north of Beaune, the 2010 Chardonnay Mon Plaisir (1,080 cases) exhibits copious notes of mangoes, tangerines and pineapples intermixed with a touch of honeysuckle, not as much minerality as La Carriere, but beautiful richness and a full-bodied mouthfeel. Slightly structured and reserved with a lot of upside potential, it should age for 8-10 years. |

WA 97 (12/2014): A strong effort, the 2012 Chardonnay Mon Plaisir (1,500 cases) exhibits notes of honeysuckle, lychee nuts, passion flowers, orange marmalade and white peaches. This full-bodied white possesses fabulous fruit intensity, stunning purity and a profound finish. Drink this beauty over the next decade. JS 97 (10/2014): This is fabulous, with incredibly Californian intensity but also finesse. Full body with bright fruit but a depth of minerals, white peaches and light honey. Wonderful length. Salty aftertaste with fruit. Oyster shell. Drink or hold. WS 95 (7/2014): A truly exotic style, ultrarich and well-oaked, showing off toast and smoke notes. This is dense, with apricot, fig, crème brûlée and marmalade flavors. A truly exceptional wine that combines power with restraint. Drink now through 2020. 1,535 cases made. VM 93 (5/2014): Bright yellow. Floral honey, melon and poached pear on the nose, with suave floral and mineral accents adding vivacity. Fleshy yet lively and sharply delineated, offering intense Meyer lemon and yellow apple flavors and a smoky mineral quality. The dry, mineral-driven finish shows excellent clarity and power, leaving a honeysuckle note behind. |
