WA 98 (6/2001): The utterly perfect, dense ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barbaresco Asili (Red Label Riserva) is a heroic offering brilliantly displaying both power and elegance. The bouquet develops incrementally, offering up aromas of black raspberries, cherries, cigar box, licorice, and leather. The wine impresses with its nuances as well as its extraordinarily rich, dense mid-palate, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. There is huge tannin, but equally massive concentration, extract, and overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. WS 95 (12/2007): Lots of raspberry, mushroom and black cherry, with a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, fruity finish. Still a little reserved, but shows lovely fruit. A gorgeous wine. Goes on and on. Best after 2008. 1,190 cases made. VM 94+ (12/2000): Saturated ruby-red color. Knockout nose combines plum liqueur, cherry, dried rose and menthol; complex, vibrant and perfumed. Then extremely young and sharply focused, with powerful acid spine and tannic backbone giving the superbly sweet, thoroughly ripe flavors great cut and thrust. But this extremely dense Barbaresco is still an infant. Smoke and animal notes add complexity. Finishes with huge, sweet, molar-coating tannins and explosive length. This classically styled Barbaresco has all the components for greatness. |

WS 98 (11/2003): Decadent. Starts with wonderfully fresh aromas of sliced plum, cedar, tobacco and meat, then evolves into floral and strawberry aromas. Full-bodied, with ultrafine, silky tannins and gloriously fresh, bright fruit. The refined finish goes on and on. One of the greatest wines ever from Bruno Giacosa. Best after 2008. 1,165 cases made. VM 97 (12/2004): Good deep red. Knockout nose reminded me of great grand cru Burgundy : superripe red fruits, tobacco, minerals and smoke. As chewy as a solid yet utterly smooth, with extraordinary inner-mouth floral character and a sappy sweetness. Expands spectacularly toward the back, finishing with very suave, late-arriving tannins and compelling length. At once more perfumed, concentrated and structured than the Santo Stefano. I underestimated this great wine when I tasted it two years ago. WA 96 (10/2006): Who am I to say no to another opportunity to taste the magnificent 2000 Barbaresco Riserva Asili? Aromatic on the nose with notes of flowers and crushed raspberries, the seductive 2000 Asili displays a dark translucent red color along with generous amounts of lush super-ripe red fruit, mineral and licorice notes in supremely elegant composition of profound overall balance. The Asili is irresistible right now but also appears to have the structure to age gracefully for at least 20 years. Readers should note that the red-label Riserva is the only Giacosa wine from Asili in vintage 2000. |

VM 96+ (3/2011): (5.5 g/l total acidity, 3.45 pH, 27.4 g/l dry extract, 13.7% alcohol): Good full red. Knockout perfumed nose is packed with aromas of red cherry, licorice, coffee, tar and underbrush. Sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained wine with a compelling fleshiness to the creamy red cherry, strawberry and candied violet flavors, given shape by harmonious acidity. Though this Barolo comes across as sweet and supple, it has Outstanding density and concentration of aromas and flavors, and its strikingly long finish features impressively smooth tannins and lingering sweetness of fruit. A simply spectacular wine: I really can't figure out why Giacosa didn't bottle this as a Riserva, since it has all the elements for future greatness. In any event, it's by far the best white label Le Rocche del Falletto ever. WA 96 (5/2006): 1999 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto—Medium red. The 1999 Rocche del Falletto opens with a sublime, classic nose of roses, tar, licorice and minerals Powerful, deep, and structured on the palate, it displays a tightly wound core of fruit with great length, much overall balance and a certain nobility in its austerity. Made in restrained style for this wine, the 1999 doesn’t initially show the opulence of vintages 1997, 1998 and 2000 nor the imposing structure of the 1996 Riserva Falletto or the 2001 Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto, remaining somewhere in the middle. Over the course of several days, however, the luxuriousness of its fruit gradually emerged. Still, readers will have to be patient with this wine. It will provide immense pleasure to those who appreciate classically structured, quintessential Barolo and it should drink well until age thirty, and likely beyond. A great effort and one the best relative values among this producer’s recent releases. An Azienda Agricola Falletto di Bruno Giacosa bottling. WS 95 (12/2009): Offers amazing aromas of blueberry and raspberry, with hints of strawberry tart. Full-bodied, showing chewy, powerful tannins and plenty of fruit. A powerful, youthful, slightly austere wine, with a great future. Tasted from magnum.—'99 Piedmont blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2011. 950 cases made. |

WA 97 (10/2006): Darker and more backward than the Falletto in both its aromas and flavors, Giacosa’s staggering 2001 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto offers an explosive nose of spices, menthol, minerals, smoke and scorched earth followed by waves of sweet fruit that coat the palate in a potent mix of finesse and sheer power, with fine tannins, and a lingering balsamic note on the finish. This complex, multi-dimensional wine will require considerable patience and will age gracefully for several decades. Made from the oldest vines at Falletto, the 2001 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is another towering achievement from Bruno Giacosa. An Azienda Agricola Falletto di Bruno Giacosa bottling. To be released in 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2031. WS 97 (10/2005): This is a beautiful, seductive wine with power yet great finesse. It?s full-bodied, with a massive silky mouthfeel and lovely raspberry and strawberry character. It?s very, very long. All in harmony. Giacosa is a master. Not the 100-point 2000, but stupendous just the same. Best after 2009. 1,200 cases made. VM 93+ (12/2002): Impressive red-ruby color. Reticent, slightly reduced nose opens quickly to show tangy spices, minerally soil tones, woodsmoke and a note of underbrush. Then juicy and vibrant in the middle palate, with a dense minerally character and the harmonious ripe acidity of the finest '98s; a velvety wine with great verve. Boasts a strong, ripe flavor of red fruit syrup and an incipient truffley perfume. The sweet fruit outlasts the substantial tannins on the long, lively finish. |

WA 98 (4/2007): The Santo Stefano is one of the most complete wines of the evening. It shows and outrageous, well-delineated nose of alcohol, roses, tar, licorice, and macerated cherries that continues to open in a never-ending display of sensations and aromas. Deceptively medium-bodied, the Santo Stefano is packed with masses of concentrated dark fruit, with superb length great overall balance, closing with a fresh finish that suggests it will continue to provide much enjoyment for years to come. Some tasters, myself included, mistook this for the Barolo Falletto. |

WA 98 (2/2010): The 1989 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano explodes from the glass with an array of soy, spices, menthol, minerals and pine in a profound, kaleidoscopic expression of this great, great vineyard. Endowed with never-ending layers of perfumed fruit, the wine reveals mind-bending complexity and a profound personality that words will never do justice to. This remains one of Giacosa’s all-time monumental wines, and it simply must be experienced by anyone who seeks to understand the genius of Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. WS 90 (12/2000): Very pretty wine. Light ruby in color, with an amber edge, the wine shows ripe, almost raisiny, character with hints of coffee and mint. Full-bodied, it's silky and caressing on the finish. Delicious.--Piedmont retrospective. Drink now. |

VM 96 (3/2014): Bruno Giacosa’s 1990 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano is a great example of the vintage. Expressive and wonderfully immediate, the 1990 rushes across the palate with an exotic and beguiling array of aromas and flavors, all with that extra bit of 1990 volume that makes this vintage so appealing. WA 96 (2/2010): The 1990 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano reveals gorgeous inner perfume in a soft, sensual style. |

WA 100 (2/2010): I suspect over the years I have had more than my fair share of the 1989 Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda. After all, there were only 2,838 bottles produced. Still, I never fail to be utterly seduced by this transcendental, emotionally moving Barolo. The Rionda isn’t Giacosa’s most powerful wine, rather it is a Barolo built on elegance. Impossibly fine, silky tannins frame subtle, yet incredibly vivid aromatics that meld into a gorgeous core of violets, roses, tar, licorice and minerals. Still incredibly fresh, this towering Barolo has another 20+ years of life ahead. It remains Giacosa’s foremost masterpiece and one of the greatest wines ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. |

VM 98 (7/2013): Bruno Giacosa's 1989 Barolo Riserva Falletto is another of the wines of the night. The pure texture, aromatic presence and structure of Nebbiolo are simply captivating. Antonio Galloni. WA 97 (2/2010): The 1989 Barolo Riserva Falletto is a deep, mineral-driven wine loaded with dark plums, smoke, prunes, plums and spices. Massive and virile, it is an assertive Barolo that commands attention for its explosive fruit and multi-faceted personality. The tannins are imposing, but also beautifully balanced. This is Giacosa’s most explosive, rich wine in 1989, and it is utterly divine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. WS 96 (7/2005): This can go for ages. Massive, with superb fruit. Young and spicy, with the long aroma of a mature wine, but it's fresh on the palate. Reviewed in a non-blind tasting. Drink now. |
