JS 96 (7/2017): This shows a beautiful complexity of ripe fruit such as cherries as well as orange peel undertones with lemon and pineapple highlights. Medium body and well-defined tannins. Drink in 2020.
WS 94 (10/2017): A fragrant style, offering rose, cherry, earth, mineral and cumin aromas and flavors. Young and tense, yet shows fine potential, with complex flavors, good structure and a long aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,500 cases made.
WA 93+ (6/2017): It may be a so-called entry level Barolo, but the 2013 Barolo Bussia definitely delivers the goods. Fruit is sourced from three separate points within the larger Bussia cru. These sites are characterized by clay soils with southeast exposures and approximately 25-year-old vines. The quality of fruit is very intense and defined with dark cherry and dried blackberry. Yet the mouthfeel is ethereal, light and buoyant. Keeping in line with the vintage, the tannins are firm and slightly rigid. However, they are well absorbed by the exuberant nature of the fruit. The wine's personality is reminiscent of the Barolo Bussia Cicala. |

JS 97 (3/2016): Very earthy and intense with ripe fruit and hints of bark and mushrooms. Full body, powerful and chewy. Great tannin structure. Better in 2020.
WA 93 (6/2016): Poderi Aldo Conterno's Bussia Romirasco sees a few extra months of oak aging. The 2012 Barolo Bussia Romirasco greatly benefits from that extra wood. Because the fruit in 2012 is less expressive overall, the Romirasco signature touch bodes well for its texture, heft and its aromatic delivery. This Barolo offers pretty richness and density with thick lines and deep concentration. The oak needs more years to integrate, but I feel confident that it will reach harmony, with time, given the wine's generous structure and fruity richness.
WS 92 (3/2017): Hints of vanilla and Bourbon waft from the glass and wrap around the core of cherry in this stylish, elegant red. A bit oaky now, with an added layer of tannins. Offers a fine finish of tobacco and spice. Best from 2020 through 2034. 400 cases made.
VM 89 (11/2016): The 2012 Barolo Romirasco is the best of these wines. Dark cherry, mocha, chocolate, smoke and plum notes give the 2012 its distinctly deep, powerful personality. From Romirasco I expect to see intense, balsamic-inflected aromatics and salivating energy. There is little, if any, of that here. The 2012 is a solid wine if taken on its own terms, but it is an underachiever relative to both the potential of this site and vintage. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (1/2014): The Barolo Bussia is the most polished and silky of these 2010s. The structure of the vintage and the finesse of Bussia meld together in a Barolo that is both graceful, powerful and resonant. Dark red/black fruit, smoke, tobacco, menthol and a host of balsamic-inflected nuances take shape in the glass. The 2010 turns bright, floral and savory in the glass, hinting at a promising future that lies ahead.
JS 93 (4/2014): A wine with plum, flower and light mushroom. Earthy and so floral. Full body with soft tannins and a juicy finish. Better in 2017. |

WA 94 (12/2007): The estate’s 2004 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is made in a slightly sweeter, but more linear, style than the Margheria. It reveals a concentrated expression of the hallmark qualities of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard in its perfumed aromatics, ripe red cherries, menthol and baking spices. With air the wine turns more muscular as it gains volume and depth in the glass. This is a beautiful and refined Bricco Fiasco from proprietor Luigi Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
WS 93 (6/2008): Shows a beautiful, rich ruby red color, with complex aromas of blackberry, sultana and violet. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and lots of ripe fruit. Has a lovely texture. Closed, but there's lots in reserve. Best after 2011. 770 cases made.
VM 91 (12/2007): Good full medium red. Reticent, subdued nose hints at plum, menthol and mint. Lush and sweet, with good vinosity to the flavors of marzipan and cinnamon. In a firm style, finishing with solid tannic grip and lingering flavor. Makes the basic bottling seem dry by comparison. Rather suave for a wine from this village and estate. |

VM 97 (5/2015): Giacosa's 2004 Barolo Falletto is a rock star. The truth is that, if tasted alone, the white label Falletto could easily be mistaken for the Red Label Riserva. It is every bit that compelling. Intensely perfumed yet also towering in stature, the 2004 is simply magnificent. The main difference between the white label and red label is finesse in the tannin, which is a bit less polished here. But that is only because there is a comparison. Taken on its own, the Falletto is one of the very finest wines of the vintage. Elegance meets power. With a little advance aeration, the 2004 can be enjoyed young, but it is frankly best left alone for another few years, especially for readers who only own a few bottles. This is yet another 2004 that has really blossomed in bottle. Antonio Galloni
WA 96 (12/2007): Giacosa’s 2004 Barolo Falletto is so compelling it will be hard not to drink it in its youth. This gorgeous Barolo reveals a deeply structured frame layered with sweet dark fruit, mint, spice and pine. At once delicate and powerful, it is a beautifully finessed wine that is sure to provide much pleasure. A recent bottle of the 1982 is a testament to the virtues of this great site as interpreted by Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
VM 94 (12/2007): Saturated medium red. Musky aromas of sappy cherry liqueur and minerals. Juicy, mineral-driven and gripping, with excellent clarity and thrust to its intense, slightly candied flavors. A very sexy, wonderfully rich and broad Barolo with substantial ripe tannins. The pHs of the Barolos and Barbarescos here are higher today than they were previously, admits Giacosa, but that's a function of warmer years and riper fruit rather than any change in philosophy.
WS 92 (6/2008): A delicate wine, with intense aromas and some strawberry, citrus fruit and cherry character. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, beautiful finish. Very pretty. All in balance and refinement. Best after 2010. 1,200 cases made.
JS 91 (5/2012): Compelling aromas of citrus fruit and berries. Full-bodied, medium tannins and a long pretty finish. This is ready. |

WS 96 (12/2011): An elegant, fruity style, boasting raspberry, cherry and floral aromas and flavors. This is pure and delicate for the commune, with fine intensity, finesse and depth. The tannins mesh beautifully with the wine's silky texture, ending with an excellent finish. Just surprisingly open and approachable. Best from 2014 through 2032. 1,500 cases made.
VM 95 (10/2011): (white label): Good deep red. Perfumed, complex nose melds plum, red cherry, mocha, tobacco, wild herbs and spices. Sweet, silky and seamless, with almost painful intensity to its fruit if not yet as complex in the mouth as on the nose. Healthy acidity accentuates the wine's perfume. Finishes with very suave tannins and Outstanding floral persistence. Said Dante Scaglione: "I thought 2007 in Serralunga would be great from the moment of the harvest."
WA 94+ (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Falletto is an overachieving wine, even at this high level. The bouquet has a level of delineation, sweetness, inner perfume and nuance generally only found in Giacosa’s Red Label Riservas. The Falletto impresses for the intensity of its dark fruit and superb overall balance. The extroverted personality of the vintage is quite evident, especially as the wine sits in the glass. Menthol, flowers and licorice add the final notes of complexity on the finish. This is an especially racy Barolo from Bruno Giacosa, but the trademark elegance is there. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.
JS 94 (11/2010): Dried strawberries, with hints of flowers. Full bodied, with clean fruit and polished tannins. Very fruity. Need a couple of years to soften. Reminds me of the 1997. |

JS 97 (11/2016): A young wine that builds on the palate with plums, spices, cedar and hints of chocolate. Turns to hazelnuts. Full to medium body, but this builds on the palate. Juicy and chewy with caressing tannins. Love the way it grows on the palate. Better in 2019.
WS 94 (12/2016): A gorgeous red, featuring all the hallmarks of great Barolo, with cherry, strawberry, floral and tobacco flavors that show hints of tar and licorice. The beefy tannins are there, but they're not overwhelming, and this glides to a lingering aftertaste of fruit, mineral and savory elements. Best from 2020 through 2038. 200 cases imported.
WA 93+ (6/2016): The 2012 Barolo Falletto is a bit timid to open and needs extra time in the glass (especially when tasted this young). This wine was bottled in March. The wine already shows impressive complexity and depth with drying mineral notes that frame a pretty core of cherry and blackberry fruit. Background notes of light spice and grilled herb complete this pretty picture. What stands out most here, however, is the tight textural fabric of this wine. It is poised for very good aging potential. |

WS 92 (7/2004): Lovely purity of fruit, with plum and light wet earth on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a pretty, fresh finish. Not a blockbuster but refined and delicious already. Give it a few years. First generic Barolo for Giacosa in years. Best after 2007. 580 cases made._x000D_
VM 90+ (12/2004): Good full red. Sweet, decadent aromas of redcurrant, marzipan, underbrush and tobacco. Sweet, fat and full, with excellent density but moderate nuance today. A bit tough on the back end following the 2000 Asili, with the tannins making themselves felt earlier. _x000D_
WA 90 (5/2006): The 2000 Barolo is less expressive and nuanced than the 1999, but it is an attractive wine offering notes of smoke, earthiness and sweet red fruit on a medium-bodied frame, with good length, soft, silky tannins and a more opulent, richer personality than the 1999. WA 96 (6/2019): I had tasted this wine from barrel last year, and the wine was already shaping up beautifully back then. Staying the course, the 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis shows extreme elegance and finesse. These are the characteristics of what is surely one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in Barolo. The Bricco Boschis cru affords a panoramic view onto much of the Langhe, with snowcapped Alps in the background. Barolo from Castiglione Falletto tends to show characteristics that are very fine, precise and linear. That's fundamentally what you get here despite the more exuberant and fleshy 2015 vintage. This wine is truly beautiful. Some 27,700 bottles were made.
WS 94 (4/2020): Mint, eucalyptus, cherry, plum and licorice notes mark this savory style of Barolo. Dense tannins pave the way for a long finish that echoes the cherry flavors and adds mineral and tobacco elements. Still a little rigid on the finish, yet shows fine balance overall. Best from 2023 through 2040. 2,312 cases made, 700 cases imported.
VM 91 (11/2019): Cavallotto's 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis is pretty and open-knit, not to mention incredibly delicious in the early going. In some vintages, the Bricco Boschis can be imposing, but the 2015 is radiant and supple, with no hard edges and tons of sheer appeal. Bright red fruit, floral and spice overtones build as this racy, inviting Barolo shows off its considerable appeal. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 99 (7/2020): The Cavallotto 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe feels magically cool even as the wine warms in the glass. Eucalyptus, menthol and medicinal herbs rise from the bouquet, with dark fruit and savory spice in tow. When you first open the bottle, it shows a distinct mineral character with crushed aspirin, limestone and graphite. I opened a second bottle a few days before this tasting and had both bottles side by side to compare. Both showed impressive results with a pristine level of focus, sharpness and linearity. With aeration, those dark fruit nuances come to the forefront, showing dried cherry, plum and candied orange peel. A few hours later, you pick up on leather, tobacco and cedar wood. This is a fluid and ever-changing wine that is well worth adding to your cellar selection. What a beauty.
WS 96 (4/2020): A classically proportioned Barolo, featuring cherry, plum, tar, iron and eucalyptus flavors, with floral hints. Dense and tannic, offering balance and a long, mouthwatering finish. Solid tannins are offset by ripe fruit and fresh acidity. Best from 2023 through 2046. 777 cases made, 300 cases imported.
VM 95+ (11/2019): The 2013 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe is just gorgeous. It's good to see how well the 2013 has come together since I first tasted it. Powerful and virile, with tremendous aromatic intensity and tons of structure, the 2013 has so much to offer. Time in the glass brings out myriad layers of nuance. Sage, mint, lavender, geranium, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flair. Put simply, the 2013 San Giuseppe is everything Barolo should be. Unlike the Vignolo, the San Giuseppe is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so, it is impressive in the early going. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 95 (7/2012): This is class with rose petal, blueberries and blackberries on the nose. Full body, with solid core of fruit yet balanced and so very long. Seamless tannins. Superb. Try in 2016.
WS 93 (6/2013): The core of black cherry and licorice is surrounded by spicy oak in this modern-styled Barolo. Firm and fresh, featuring ample fruit to match the structure. The lingering aftertaste of mineral and berry catches a wave of acidity. Best from 2017 through 2038. 1,080 cases made.
VM 93 (10/2011): (since 2006, this and the Ciabot Mentin have been aged for two years in 80% new and 20% second-use barriques): Medium red. Very fresh aromas and flavors of redcurrant, dried flowers, tobacco, graphite and earth. Conveys an almost painful impression of energy in the mouth, showing superb focus and finesse. Finishes very long and penetrating, with firm but elegant tannins.
WA 91 (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo Pajana is surprisingly open and accessible in its fruit for a young Clerico Barolo, although the Nebbiolo tannins are, of course, quite prominent. The wine shows good plushness and generosity in its dark red fruit, mocha, spices, new leather, flowers and licorice, all of which flesh out on the supple finish. The visceral thrill of Clerico's best wines is missing. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2022. |

WS 95 (7/2007): Dark ruby-garnet. Superfresh plum, peach and berry on the nose. Full-bodied, with juicy, yet chewy tannins and a long, rich fruity finish. Reserved and tight still. Give it time.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2010.
VM 90+ (11/2000): Deep, bright ruby-red. Sweet, spicy aromas of redcurrant and plum. Still rather closed in the mouth following the recent bottling, but the plummy fruit and spicy wood appear to be nicely integrated, with the result that the wine is not at all overly oaky. Rather silky texture. Finishes with big, ripe tannins that spread out to coat the palate. |

VM 94 (3/2015): Cannubi
WA 93 (6/2015): Chiara Boschis has produced an admirable 2011 Barolo Cannubi that offers deep richness and plush layers that you don't often get with this single-vineyard. The vintner has done a terrific job of portraying the muscular vintage against the feminine vineyard site. Barolo Cannubi opens to dark fruit, dry earth and spice. Yet, it remains breezy and airy, nonetheless, with an elegant and buoyant personality. Pretty menthol notes appear on the close. Farming is organic and this wine is aged in barrique and botte grande in equal parts.
WS 93 (9/2015): Pure and elegant, exhibiting cherry, strawberry, floral and mineral flavors, married to a solid, stylish frame. Linear yet verging on lacy, with a long, resonant aftertaste. Best from 2018 through 2032. 800 cases made.
JS 93 (4/2015): A silky and fine wine with blueberry, plum and mineral character. Full body, tight palate and a long finish. Better in 2016. |

WA 91 (6/2018): A tribute to local tradition, the 2014 Barolo Albe represents an assembly of fruit from various vineyard plots throughout the area. Winemaking is classic in approach with a 25-day maceration period and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This vintage shows silky, fine lines and a more accessible approach for near and medium-term drinking. I would recommend a few more years of bottle aging, however, to allow the wine the time to grow in texture and mouthfeel.
VM 90 (2/2018): Vajra's 2014 Barolo Albe is a pretty wine, but it is also a touch slender. Part of that is, of course, attributable to the vintage, but in recent years the Albe has been stylistically more similar to the other Barolos in the range than it was at the outset. Suggestions of sweet tobacco, cinnamon, dried flowers and black cherry are layered in this supple, easygoing Barolo. Drink it over the next handful of years. ANtonio Galloni. |

WA 98 (7/2020): From the Bricco delle Viole cru, or the vineyard most strongly associated with this historic estate, this is a versatile or "evergreen" wine that always delivers consistent results. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole sees fruit from a seven-hectare vineyard with high exposures positioned at 400 to 480 meters above sea level. This site shows characteristic Tortonian-era soils classified as Sant'Agata marl with fossils. These soils have an enormous capacity to regulate the ripening process, resulting in the longer growing seasons relished by the Nebbiolo grape. In a word, the profile here is classic. You get delicate fruit tones and wild rose with camphor ash, licorice and tar. The wine is beautifully harmonious and ethereal. Some 15,000 bottles are hitting the market now.
VM 97 (2/2020): The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is going to need a few years to emerge, but it has all the qualities to develop into a truly special wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, hard candy, mint, lavender and sweet spice give the 2016 striking inner perfume. On the palate, the 2016 is a tightly wound, classically austere Barolo that will especially delight readers with traditionally leaning palates. In this late-ripening vintage, there is a great balance of structure, aromatics and mid-palate sweetness. I absolutely loved it. Antonio Galloni.
JS 97 (5/2020): The nose is packed with blue flowers, such as violets, iodine and blueberries. Very charming, seductive aromas here. The palate has such plush, long and expansive style. Elegant and smooth, it delivers an expansive bloom of fragrance and flavor at the finish. Effortless and layered. This is a star of the vintage. Drink now and for two decades. |

WA 95+ (10/2009): The recently-bottled 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia is, as expected, somewhat closed down at this stage from an aromatic perspective. That said, it is impossible to ignore the wine’s richness and depth, both of which are impressive. With time in the glass hints of sweet roses, cherries, spices and tar emerge, all framed by impeccably silky tannins. As always, readers should taste this wine as soon as possible, as it will almost certainly head for a slumber during which it will be impossible to evaluate with any accuracy. Today, this mid-weight, graceful Barolo Cascina Francia looks to be accessible relatively early, which means around age 10-12 give or take. It is another superb Barolo from Giacomo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.
VM 95 (7/2016): Conterno’s 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia has developed in a very pretty, delicate wine. Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. The 2005 is an especially polished Cascina Francia that is just entering the early part of its plateau of maturity. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino. Antonio Galloni.
JS 93 (3/2011): Aromas of truffles, forest floor, and ripe fruit. On the palate, leather and orange peel. This is rich and powerful, with some serious tannins. I love the fruit now, but should be peaking after 2014.
WS 91 (12/2010): Wonderful aromas of plum and sultana, with hints of wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins, plenty of ripe fruit and a citrus undertone that turns to a mahogany and light chocolate undertone. Complex and tight. Best after 2011. 1,665 cases made. |

JS 98 (11/2016): A gorgeous nose of orange peel, plums and light walnuts. Some wet earth. Full to medium body with a compacted center palate. A tight ball of ripe, fine tannins. Minerals and hot stones underneath. Serious structure. No Monfortino was made so it's all here. Better in 2022.
VM 97 (11/2016): The 2012 Barolo Francia is wonderfully expressive today. Much more open than the Barolo Cerretta tasted alongside it, the Francia bristles with energy. Floral and mineral overtones add to an impression of brightness, yet there is plenty of underlying tannin and overall structure. In 2012, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his flagship Barolo Monfortino. Instead, the cask that would have been destined for Monfortino was blended into the Francia. Historically, that decision has often resulted in a 'super Francia.' It will be interesting to see if the 2012 gains volume and depth in aging. I have to say, the wine is surprisingly accessible in the early going, although it has just been bottled and is likely to close down at some point. VM 99 (11/2018): The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a huge, towering wine marked by serious fruit intensity and a backbone of firm, classically austere tannins. Certainly next to the 2014 and 2015, the sheer tannic clout of the 2013 is impossible to miss. Sage mint, tobacco and dried flower notes add striking shades of aromatic nuance, but the 2013 is ultimately distinguished by its huge, potent personality. It is sure to thrill those who own it for many decades to come. In 2013, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his Barolo Francia. Instead, he chose to use all of the fruit for the flagship Barolo Monfortino, which up until the present, he had only done once before, in 2002. Antonio Galloni.
JS 99 (1/2019): Warm aromas of plums, rose petals and spices with hints of sandalwood. Some tar. Full body, dense center palate with glorious fruit and a fantastic finish. Very, very polished and fine tannins. Vertical and deep. A great Monfortino. Try in 2023.
WA 98 (6/2019): I have been tasting this wine from barrel for the past two years and now finally, abracadabra, the 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is safely housed in bottle. The wine was bottled in June of last year and will hit the market this upcoming October. The Barolo Francia was not produced in 2013 because Roberto Conterno diverted all fruit from that vineyard to this wine. Monfortino was not produced in 2011 or 2012, meaning that this 2013 edition follows directly after the absolutely stunning 2010 vintage (which earned a perfect 100-point score). The two vintages (2010 and 2013) are very similar, strikingly so, but the 2013 vintage registers at a slightly lower structural threshold. The tannins are slightly looser, or softer in the case of this wine. With up to six years in botte, the 2010 vintage is still crunchy and super sharp, while this wine is slightly more succulent and earthy. Some 20,000 bottles, 2,500 magnums and 400 three-liter bottles were made. |

| VM 100 (10/2020): The 2014 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is an epic wine, just as it always has been. Readers will surely be tempted to taste the 2014 now, but I would try to resist that, if possible. Usually, I recommend tasting young Monfortino upon release, when it has only been bottled for a few months and before it shuts down. Roberto Conterno gave the 2014 six years in cask (instead of seven), so the 2014 was bottled a year earlier, in the summer of 2019, which means it is now very much in the closed-down zone. Time in the glass brings out its inner sweetness and sensuality, but the 2014 is nowhere near as expressive today as it was from cask, or earlier this year when it was one of the highlights of a magnum vertical all the way back to 1970. The 2014 Monfortino is an epic, monumental wine in every way. Opening a bottle now, though, is not likely to be especially rewarding. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94 (6/2019): Mascarello's legendary cru, from this historic 15-acre, southwest-facing plot not far from the town of Castiglione Falletto, never disappoints. The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is as engaging and as individual as I had hoped it would be. Still in its youth, the bouquet reaches out with wild berry and strawberry, and it has started to show unique tones of natural rubber, tropical fruit and peach—not at all what you might expect from a Nebbiolo, but very delicate and elegant nonetheless. Like every Monprivato vintage, it will take years in the bottle to reach its full potential. Still very closed, this one will only just begin to open after the summer.
VM 93 (11/2019): The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is one of the finest Barolos I have tasted from the Mascarello family in a number of years. That is all the more remarkable considering a challenging growing season in which conditions were so tough that Mauro Mascarello did not want to show me his vineyard that summer. In the glass, though, the 2014 is gorgeous. Perfumed, bright and gracious, the 2014 captures all the best that was possible. Sage, mint, lavender and dark red/purplish berries add nuance to this super-expressive, transparent Barolo. Although the 2014 is not an epic Monprivato, it is a very beautiful wine. More importantly, let's hope it represents a return to the level of quality that was the norm at this reference-point estate up until 2009. Antonio Galloni.

| VM 96 (4/2012): Luciano Sandrone's 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. WA 94 (4/2009): The 2005 Barolo Le Vigne opens with fresh, high-toned aromas that meld into a core of perfumed red fruits. There is notable vibrancy to the fruit, and although the 2005 is a relatively small-scaled vintage for this wine, the balance is exceptional. The Le Vigne has more than enough fruit to follow through all the way to the close, where notes of raspberry jam offer a final burst of intensity. Le Vigne is made from a number of parcels in Vignane (Barolo), Conterni and Ceretta (Monforte) and Merli (Novello). In 2005 the harvest took place in the first two weeks of October. The wines were vinified separately, then racked into 500-liter barrels. The final blend was assembled in the summer of 2006. Every year I taste through the various parcels separately and every year I am amazed by the way the final blend transcends the quality of the individual wines. Simply put, Le Vigne is a gem of a wine from Luciano Sandrone. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
VM 92+ (12/2009): Very good deep red-ruby. Highly nuanced nose combines raspberry, dried flowers, camphor, tobacco and dried spices. Lush on entry, then medicinal and rather closed in the middle, with a serious tannic spine keeping the flavors under wraps today. This makes the serious 2006 seem silky and sweet by comparison, and yet even here the wine's flavors spread out to saturate the palate.
WS 92 (7/2009): Sweet blackberry and cherry aromas, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with a solid core of blackberry fruit and a long finish. Tight and chewy. Layered and pretty. Racy and fruity. Best after 2011. 1,450 cases made. |

WA 95+ (6/2019): Luciano Sandrone expected this would be a beautiful year for Nebbiolo, with fruit showing the qualities of an important wine all throughout the growing season and right up to harvest. And yes, the 2015 Barolo le Vigne did turn out to be a great vintage, with a full aromatic array of perfumed rose, lavender and violet. For all of its generosity and expressiveness, with just a beautiful bouquet that sings out a seductive mezzo-soprano aria, be forewarned that in the mouth this is followed by rigidity and nervousness. That explosive bouquet might mislead you into thinking this is a rather evolved wine, but you certainly feel its youth on the palate. To be frank, this was an easy year to make wine, and it's not a big surprise that this edition of le Vigne turned out to be as classic and as good as it is. It should get even better with time.
VM 95 (2/2019): The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli. Antonio Galloni.
WS 94 (2/2020): Distinctive aromas of freshly mowed hay, blood orange and cherry mark this supple, elegant and vibrant Barolo. Tightens up on the finish, but chalk that up to youthful exuberance. Stretches out nicely on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2042. 250 cases imported. |

VM 93+ (3/2015): The flagship 2011 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the wine that seems to have suffered the most from its recent bottling. The signature mineral/ferrous notes are present, but the wine hasn't fully come together in bottle. At this stage, the 2011 is quite reticent, especially compared to how it showed from tank prior to bottling, but I am not at all concerned given the wine's brilliant track record and this site's history for producing tannic, ageworthy Barolos. Today, though, there is not a lot of vintage 2011 sexiness. |

JS 94 (4/2012): Wow what a nose! Citrus, flowers, blackberries. Tons of dark fruits. Full-bodied with round, fresh tannins and ripe, wonderful palate. Turns slightly raisiny then hits you with intense dried mushrooms, think porcini. From a magnum.
WS 94 (7/2004): Wonderfully fresh and floral, with strawberry, raspberry and cut cedar aromas. Full-bodied, with refined tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Builds on the palate. Very elegant and long. Not quite the 1997 or 1995, but clearly Outstanding. Best after 2008. 1,945 cases made.
VM 94 (6/2011): The 2000 Barolo Carobric (magnum) is an exotic, full-bodied wine loaded with scorched earth, licorice, tar and smoke, all of which add considerable nuance to a massive core of fruit. This hulking, seamless wine is at least a few years from early maturity and should continue to drink well for many, many years. It is magnificent. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (5/2015): The 2004 Barolo Carobric is in a great place today where it is starting to show the first signs of aromatic complexity, yet it also clearly has plenty of upside for the future. Firm yet nicely integrated tannins give the 2004 much of its energy. Sweet tobacco, plums, underbrush, cherries and melted road tar linger on the multi-faceted finish. Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. Antonio Galloni.
WA 94 (12/2007): Scavino’s 2004 Barolo Carobric comes across as classic in its expression of violets, black cherries, minerals and sweet toasted oak. It too offers gorgeous inner sweetness to its fruit, but it is more focused and less concentrated than the other 2004 Barolos. This is a beautifully proportioned, vibrant Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. Carobric is made from a blend of Rocche di Castiglione, Bric del Fiasc and Cannubi This bottling has often suffered an identity crisis among the single-vineyard wines in the lineup but in recent years its personality has gradually begun to show its potential. The 2004 is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

WS 95 (12/2007): Medium red, with hints of garnet on the edge. Aromas of very ripe strawberry, with cedar, dried mushroom and spices. Fabulous roses on the nose. Full-bodied, with seductive flavors and textures. Strawberry, tea, tar and roses galore, yet refined and subtle. So very long and dense, yet balanced and beautiful. Even better than I remember. This was our No. 7 wine in 2001.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Drink now. 6,200 cases made.
JS 95 (6/2013): Holding on beautifully, with lovely prunes, crushed flowers, and cedar on the nose and palate. Round textured with a ripe, caressing, sleek finish.
WA 90-92 (6/2001): The 1997 Barolo was performing well prior to bottling. Broad, sweet, fat flavors with considerable glycerin and alcohol are present in this full-bodied, structured, powerful, muscular Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.
VM 89-90 (12/2000): Good deep red-ruby. Very ripe, slightly rustic aromas of gun flint, leather and licorice. Fat, sweet and rich, with gun flint, leather and mineral flavors. Substantial chewy tannins show a hint of astringency. |

WA 94 (12/2007): The 2004 Barolo La Serra reveals a generous personality in its dark red fruit with notable depth and richness that carries through to the persistent, sweet finish. With air, floral notes develop to round out this particularly multi-dimensional, full-bodied and beautiful La Serra. 2004 is a great vintage for this wine, which can sometimes be austere. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.
VM 92 (12/2007): (bottled in August of 2007) Good saturated full red. Lovely perfumed nose offers redcurrant and rose petal. Dense, sweet and nicely delineated, offering lovely energy without any impression of weight. This has a floral character I don't find in the estate's 2003s. Finishes long and impressively pure, with firm but fine tannins and vibrant fruits and flowers. Structured to evolve slowly in bottle. |

WA 96+ (4/2012): The 2008 Barolo La Serra emerges from the glass with dark red fruit, tar, smoke, licorice, spices and new leather. Today the 2008 comes across as surprisingly dark and masculine. The high-toned floral notes that are typical of this site have been replaced by a much darker, brooding register filled with tar, incense and black fruit notes. The wine freshens up beautifully with time in the glass as the aromatics become a bit more expressive. Voerzio’s 2008 La Serra is a huge and hugely promising wine. The firm tannins argue for at least a few more years in bottle. A hint of rose petal lingers on the intense finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
WS 95 (2/2014): The tar, eucalyptus and ripe raisin aromas and flavors turn toward sandalwood, coffee and spice notes with aeration. Broad-shouldered, complex and powerful, featuring sweet fruit and a supple texture. Lively, refined tannins mark the finish. Best from 2017 through 2027. 316 cases made.
JS 92 (7/2012): Subtle aromas of blueberries and porcini mushrooms follow through to a full body, with soft and silky tannins and a delicate chocolate and berry aftertaste. Hard not to drink now but will improve with age. |

| VM 97 (2/2017): The 2013 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is ample, generous and also surprisingly rich. The more intense, voluptuous side of Rocche comes through loud and clear. Even with all of its textural depth, the Rocche possesses superb aromatic intensity and nuance. The 2013 is an unusually rich, racy Rocche, with tons of mid-palate richness. In many vintages, the Rocche is open-knit and sensual, which gives it a certain amount of early accessibility. I don't see much of that in the 2013. Readers will have to be patient here. | VM 91 (2/2019): Vietti's 2015 Barolo Castiglione is soft, silky and pliant, all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Floral and nicely lifted, the 2015 is very pretty, if not quite the overachiever it can be. I expect the 2015 will be even more expressive once the tannins soften a bit further. In this tasting, the Castiglione stands out for its freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out an extra layer of textural breadth and resonance that is not immediately apparent. Bright red cherry and red plum fruit, wild flowers, mint, blood orange and spice build as this sumptuous, dramatic Barolo shows all it's got. As always, the Castiglione is built on a core of fruit from Ravera. In 2016, the Castiglione benefits from the inclusion of several new sites, including Ginestra, Mosconi, Bricco Ravera (in Monforte), Le Coste, Costabelle, Meriame, Briccolina and Codana.
