WA 89 (2/2000): This beautifully made Spanish red represent a more modern approach to winemaking. Sweet toasty oak competes with jammy black cherry and berry fruit in this deep, low acid offering. It possesses excellent to outstanding concentration, top flight purity, and overall equilibrium. Drink this impressively-endowed Ribera del Duero over the next 10-12 years. |

VM 91 (11/1999): Bright ruby. Superripe, slightly roasted aromas of currant, dark chocolate and exotic baking spices. Sweet, dense and supple; compared to Vega Sicilia, this has a suaver, more French texture. Really fills and coats the mouth. But still quite youthfully unevolved in the middle. Finishes with chewy, ripe tannins and powerful fruit. Stephen Tanzer. |

WS 94 (11/2000): Seamless. This red is a beautiful combination of ripe fruit, powerful structure and polished texture. Lush flavors of blackberries and plums are supported by firm, ripe tannins and give way to coffee and mineral notes on the long finish. Drink now through 2010. 1,200 cases made. VM 90-91 (8/1999): Bright ruby-red. Cooler aromas of black raspberry and game. Lush, thick and seamless; also grapey and unevolved but doesn't possess quite the urgency of flavor of the '98. Lively note of licorice in the mouth. Has a smaller tannic structure, but this is delicious, bright and quite stylish. |

WS 89 (4/2000): Supple yet intense, this red offers plenty of raspberry and black cherry flavors, with accents of cinnamon and toast. It has enough tannin to match with food, and a long, seductive finish. Drink now through 2004. |

Broad, lush and full but also boasts terrific vinosity. Finishes long, smooth and sweet, with chewy, ripe, toothcoating tannins. Impressive. |

VM 89 (9/2004): (based on 100-year-old garnacha and carinena, with some cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot) Deep red. Smoky, nutty oak currently dominates on the nose. Then dense but juicy, with superripe flavors of dried fruits, blackberry, and minerals. Like a drier-styled port: slightly pruney but with a dry, nutty edge. Finishes with slightly dry but fine tannins and good length. I'd like to have seen a bit more sweetness. Stephen Tanzer. WA 93-95 (4/2004): Tasted just before it was bottled, there will be 4,800 bottles of the 2001 Amadis (a blend of 45% Grenache and 20% Carignan from 90-100 year old vines, and the rest younger vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot). A sensational bouquet of blackberry liqueur, acacia flowers, crushed stones, and sweet oak emerges from a wine of great purity, layers of flavor, an opulent texture, and a sweet finish. This beauty should drink well young yet age effortlessly for 10-15 years. |

VM 93 (10/2004): (100% tempranillo) Deep, saturated ruby. Initially mute nose opened to show blackberry, currant, plum, game and expensive French oak (the wine went through its malolactic fermentation in new barrels). Fat, sweet and superconcentrated, with sappy crushed berry flavors and a complicating saline quality. Superripe and impressively dense, in need of a couple years of additional bottle aging. _x000D__x000D_WS 93 (9/2004): Brooding powerhouse. This massive red coats the palate with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis, with mouthfilling tannins and plenty of chocolate and espresso notes from oak. Impressive concentration; it needs hearty food for balance. Best after 2006._x000D__x000D_WA 93 (4/2004): The debut release of the 100% Tempranillo cuvee from a 3.66 acre vineyard planted in 1973, the 2001 El Bosque is spectacular. It spent 16 months in new French oak, and was bottled unfiltered. Sadly, there are only 50 cases for the USA. An opaque purple color is accompanied by a gorgeous bouquet of graphite, black currants, licorice, espresso, and chocolate. This full-bodied, dense, concentrated red requires another 2-3 years of cellaring because of its elevated tannin, but it should last for 10-15 years. It is very impressive. This winery consistently makes the pages of this publication’s best buy section regardless of vintage._x000D__x000D__x000D__x000D__x000D_ |

WA 97 (10/1997): I first wrote laudatory comments about Pesquera over a decade ago, so I am thrilled to see proprietor Alejandro Fernandez continue to build on his noteworthy track record. His new releases are splendid. What a joy it is to write about the 1994 Janus. Fernandez has only made this super-luxury cuvee in 1982, 1986, and 1991. The 1994 Janus may be the greatest Pesquera ever made. This wine is awesome in its richness, intensity, and potential complexity. It is a gentle giant, with no hard edges, and profound levels of rich, concentrated black fruits nicely meshed with smoky, spicy new oak. It is an opulent, accessible yet still unformed wine that should provide fabulous drinking for 12-15 years. |

Unico Ribera del Duero |

WA 96 (8/2012): The 1981 Unico is one of the forgotten gems of the decade, yet at thirty years of age it has really come into its own. It is a blend of 65% Tinto Fino, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot/Malbec. Initially it seems lighter on the nose than the 1982, but given time in the glass it simply blossoms with pure kirsch and Morello cherry aromas, plus a dalliance with orange sorbet. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced. There is a sense of symmetry, the leitmotif of great Unico wines. Fresh and vital, this 1981 is a stunning addition to the pantheon of great wines from this estate. 77,092 bottles produced. Drink now-2030. WS 93 (5/1998): This beautiful red from Spain would put many a Bordeaux from the same vintage to shame. It's got a deep, youthful color, alluring spice and cherry pie aromas and a supple yet concentrated palate with cherry, spice and tobacco flavors. The tannins are softening, yet will still match with food, and the finish is long and spicy. Drink now through 2005. 4,300 cases made. VM 91 (10/1998): Deep red. Superripe aromas of currant, espresso and iron. Dense, ripe, fruity and youthful. Supple and generous, with good supporting acidity. Really fat with fruit but seems less powerfully structured than the '86. The firm finish builds and builds. |

WA 94 (4/2004): The 2001 Vinas de Gain (100% Tempranillo) is a fabulous effort for the price (one of the best buys in the marketplace). Aged in French oak casks (about 40% new) for 12-14 months, it boasts a deep purple color to the rim as well as a perfume of raspberries, blackberries, crushed stones, and white flowers. With extraordinary precision, definition, and finesse, great elegance, wonderful sweetness, medium body, and a gorgeously textured finish, it caresses the palate, offering considerable personality and overall symmetry. It will drink beautifully for 7-8 years. |
