WA 98 (10/2006): Wine consumers often forget just how brilliant Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can be as the area is far more renowned for its old vine Shiraz and Grenache, but they should take a look at the 2004 Aphrodite, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new Taransaud barrels. This inky/blue/purple-hued, sexy Cabernet offers a glorious perfume of graphite, creme de cassis, smoke, and vanillin. Full-bodied and stunningly rich, with terrific purity, headiness, and laser-like definition as well as precision, this is a remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon that would turn heads even among Bordeaux first growths. It is a 30 year wine that should hit its peak in 4-5 years. VM 95 (8/2006): Inky, opaque ruby. Huge, sexy bouquet of redcurrant, creme de cassis, fruitcake, candied licorice, exotic tobacco and dried flowers. This explodes on the palate, showing an array of concentrated, liqueur-like dark berry flavors, cherry preserves, plums-name a dark fruit and it's in here. Suave oak spice adds complexity and sweetness (this was aged in 100% new, large Taransaud barrels). The dense fruit is surprisingly fresh and suave, with a lightness of touch that belies the outsized flavors. Finishes with very fine, sweet tannins. It's remarkable that a wine with this flavor profile can be so elegant. WS 91 (11/2006): Big and ripe, a mouthfilling Cabernet that offers a blast of raspberry and black cherry fruit, shaded with savory, meaty overtones that are reminiscent of roast game. A smoky note adds interest to the firm-textured finish. Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2011 through 2019. 96 cases imported. |

VM 93 (7/2010): Opaque purple. Deep, ripe aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola, licorice, mocha, pepper and chocolatey, smoky oak. Lush, ripe and deeply concentrated, with a layered texture to the flavors of dark berry liqueur, cola, candied violet and bitter chocolate. Finishes impressively broad, velvety and spicy, with smooth tannins and very good definition. Pretty elegant for such a decadent wine. Josh Raynolds. |

WS 93 (7/2008): Firm in texture, this is balanced with a vibrant core of red cherry, raspberry and spice flavors that persist on the chewy finish, expanding to show hints of dark chocolate and sweet spices. Best from 2010 through 2016. 5,400 cases imported. WA 92 (2/2009): The purple-colored 2006 Shiraz Bella’s Garden from Barossa Valley offers a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, pepper, damp earth, blueberry, and licorice. This leads to a full-bodied, layered Shiraz with excellent grip and power. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2011 to 2022. |

WS 94 (9/2010): (Wine Spectator #2 wine of 2010) Dark and dense, but emerges with vivid color and bright flavors of raspberry, black cherry and a hint of peach, beautifully tinged with cocoa, licorice and mineral notes as the finish sails on impressively. Drink now through 2018. 2,400 cases made. VM 92 (8/2010): Deep, bright ruby. Seductive aromas of dark berries, violet, incense and dusty cocoa powder. Concentrated and tactile, with superb depth and noteworthy definition and cut to the flavors of cherry compote, dark berry liqueur and candied violet. Wonderfully broad on the long, expansive finish. The tannins are smooth and harmonious, fading quickly into the fruit. Great fruit and florality here. |
