WA 94 (6/2010): A beautiful wine from Branaire, the 2000 is close to full maturity, and should offer plenty of pleasure over the next 15-20 years. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by scents of boysenberries, black currants, and spring flowers. This medium to full-bodied, pure St.-Julien hits the palate with authority, displaying silky tannins as well as wonderful richness, depth, and texture. NM 92 (10/2010): Ex-chateau bottle tasted at Roberson’s Branaire-Ducru tutorial. The nose is very well defined with the Cabernet Sauvignon lending it more cedar and pencil lead tones. Tightly coiled and reticent, this is a bouquet that does not want to come out and play. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a rigid structure here with superb balance. Almost understated in style with very good clarity on the fresh, focused finish, but it needs longer to show its true potential. Excellent. Drink 2012-2030. VM 92 (6/2003): Good medium ruby. Deep, smoky aromas of cassis, raspberry, leather, chocolate and roasted oak. Sweet, supple and thick but not at all heavy. A very concentrated wine with lovely sweetness of fruit and terrific mouth coverage. Really spreads out on the back end, which features broad, ripe tannins and terrific length. WS 92 (3/2003): This is lovely, with pretty berry, floral and currant aromas. Full-bodied, with silky and caressing tannins and a delicious, fruity finish. Harmonious and enjoyable. Best after 2009. 15,000 cases made. |

WA 94 (8/2014): This fully mature, gorgeous 2003 Branaire Ducru possesses silky tannins, lots of cedary, spice box, floral, black cherry, forest floor and velvety leather-like notes, full body, and an opulent, complex yet elegant style. A beauty of complexity, richness and finesse, it should continue to drink well for another 5-6 years. JS 93 (3/2011): Extremely perfumed, with currants, blackberries, and flowers on the nose. Full bodied, with a solid core of beautiful fruit and super chewy, yet polished tannins. This is a brick house. Pull the cork after 2016. WS 93 (3/2006): Opulent aromas of blackberry, olives and toasted oak follow through to a full-bodied palate, with big chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Big and muscular wine. Best after 2009. 15,000 cases made. VM 92 (6/2006): Sexy aromas of raspberry, mocha and milk chocolate. Fat, sweet, rich and full; a large-scaled, seamless wine with terrific volume. Just a hint of exotic roasted character on the palate-caressing finish. As appealing as this is right now, it appears to be shutting down in the bottle. NM 90 (3/2013): Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s “10-Year On” tasting in London. Once again, there is a touch of brettanomyces on the nose of the Branaire Ducru, though not as much as the Talbot. It offers light cedar and undergrowth scents, wild mint and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is comparatively (for the vintages) classic in style, quite conservative in many ways, but there is a sense of refinement on the finish that is unusual for the vintage. Fine. |

NM 90+ (11/2008): The ’04 Branaire-Ducru was promising out of barrel, but not as convincing as others. But here in bottle, this is a success for the estate in a modest vintage. The nose has blossomed in the interim, with sweet blackberry, a hint of steaming black coffee and lots of cedar. With time it develops a lovely floral note, complemented by a hint of damson. The palate is full-bodied, supple and tannic, not as foursquare as in barrel, but still assertive and keen to make an impression. That is fine because it is well defined and has lovely blackberry, briary and a hint of mocha on the finish. Great length. This could merit an even higher mark down the line, so watch this space. Drink 2012-2024. WA 90 (6/2007): Possessing the finest aromatics of all the 2004 St.-Juliens, Branaire Ducru offers complex licorice, cranberry, boysenberry, and floral notes interwoven with notions of plums and figs. This dark ruby/purple-tinged, medium-bodied, elegant effort offers sweet fruit as well as ripe tannins. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 14 -15. VM 90 (6/2007): Bright, dark red. Very expressive aromas of plum, coffee, smoked meat, tobacco and underbrush. Rich, ripe and pliant; very easy to taste after the young 2006. Berry flavors are complemented by chocolate and mint. Not at all overly sweet but offers lovely concentration and balance, and finishes supple and persistent. Lovely claret. WS 88 (3/2007): Attractive blackberry and currant aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Refined and pretty. Needs a bit more concentration to be Outstanding. Best after 2008. 15,000 cases made. |

WA 93-95 (5/2011): Proprietor Patrick Maroteaux has completed a decade of brilliant performances at this chateau across the Medoc’s Route de Vin from Beychevelle and a stone’s throw from Ducru Beaucaillou, St.-Pierre and Gloria. A fabulous effort, the 2010's notes of raspberry jam, black currants, crushed rocks and spring flowers are followed by a wine of impeccable purity, medium to full-bodied power, sweet tannin and stunning texture and length. With superb richness and beautiful overall equilibrium, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and keep for 25 or more years. JS 93-94 (4/2012): A very pretty red with flowers, blackberries, and blueberries. Full and silky with racy tannins and a long finish. Some hints of cocoa and pleasant bitterness. Well structured. WS 90-93 (4/2012): A very elegant style, with a violet frame to the supple red currant, blueberry and black cherry fruit flavors that mingle with high-toned spice on the finish. Offers fine-grained structure. |

WA 95 (4/2022): The 2019 Branaire-Ducru unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, blackcurrants, sweet soil tones and hints of cigar wrapper, rose petals and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's youthfully tightly wound, with terrific concentration, tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. While this is a little reserved out of the gates, its energy and classical proportions will richly reward bottle age. JD 94-96 (6/2020): Beautiful blue fruits, tobacco, damp earth, and floral notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Branaire-Ducru. It's medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, and shows the quality of the vintage perfectly. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades or more. It reminds me of the 2009. VM 94 (2/2022): The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is one that I was eager to re-taste in bottle. Deep in color, it has a very well-defined nose of tightly packed dark berries, the tobacco element less obvious than before, and slightly more floral, with light sous-bois notes developing with aeration. The 60% new oak is neatly integrated. The palate shows real vivacity and tension on the entry and delivers crunchy black fruit, touches of blue fruit and a little iodine. Sappy from start to finish, this has a real saline tang that urges you back for another sip. There is definitely is more substance compared to previous vintages, and I wager that this represents the best Branaire-Ducru in recent years. |
