WA 92-95 (4/2013): A spectacular wine from this nearly 50-acre vineyard situated atop St.-Emilion’s famed limestone plateau, the final blend for the 2012 Beau-Sejour Becot was 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. It achieved 14% natural alcohol and yields were 31 hectoliters per hectare. One of the stars of the vintage, it is elegant yet powerful, rich and authoritative with abundant black raspberry, blueberry, graphite and toasty vanillin notes. Full-bodied and super rich for a 2012, it is packed with potential. The tannins are ripe as well as abundant suggesting several years of bottle age will be required. It should turn out to be a 20 year proposition.
JS 92 (2/2015): A red with juicy fruit and fine tannins including a dried meat and smoke undertone. Full body, tight tannins and a flavorful finish. Improved in barrel. A joy to taste. Better in 2018.
WS 91 (3/2015): This has a nice core of bramble-edged plum and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors, underscored with lightly singed alder and juniper hints. A mineral note maintains a little tension through the finish. This should age nicely in the mid-term. Best from 2016 through 2022. 5,416 cases made.
NM 91+ (1/2016): Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Beausejour Becot had a strange bouquet at first, a little funkiness that soon dissipates with several swirls of the glass. I like the delineation here, nuanced red cherry and wild strawberry scents, black tea and undergrowth, though I noticed that it becomes just a little volatile with aeration—something to watch out for. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, foursquare for a Saint Emilion and yet nicely focused, just the right amount of dryness, if not quite delivering the requisite complexity and tension on the finish. This is one of those wines that is "nearly there" and needs bottle age, but I am certain it will come good once it has settled down.
VM 88-91 (5/2013): Bright ruby. Blackcurrant, graphite, licorice and pepper on the nose. Blackberry, spices and vanilla on the palate, with a violet topnote contributing to an impression of lift. Nicely sweet and savory Saint-Emilion, with building concentration, very good length and plenty of early appeal. Ian d'Agata |

WA 92-94 (4/2018): The tentative blend of the 2017 Beau-Sejour Becot is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with an earthy nose of mossy bark, truffles and fertile loam with a core of baked plums, crushed blackberries and black raspberries. The palate is medium-bodied, refreshing and delicately played with energetic fruit and plush tannins, finishing earthy.
WS 93-96 (4/2018): Shows a lovely, engaging feel, offering succulent blackberry and cherry compote notes. Delightfully pure, with light echoes of bramble, chalk and anise flittering through the finish. Silky and refined, this has length to burn.
VM 91-94 (5/2018): The 2017 Beau-Sejour-Becot is dark, dense and inviting, with striking textural richness and fabulous depth. Succulent black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice and menthol. All the elements fall into place in a soft, beautifully resonant Saint-emilion from the Becot family. Antonio Galloni.
JD 91-94 (4/2018): Coming from an incredible terroir located on the limestone plateau just outside the village, the 2017 Château Beau-Sejour Becot is a medium-bodied, refined, incredibly elegant 2017 that offers awesome notes of crème de cassis, crushed violets, earth, and a saline-like minerality. Winemaker Thomas Duclos compares the 2017 to 2012, saying the wines will put on weight in barrel as well in bottle. Their 2017 is a fresh, vibrant wine and has tons of potential. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Merlot brought in from the 14th to the 22nd of September, and the Cabernets on October 28 and 29. The wine will spend 16 months in 65% new French oak, with the balance in stainless steel, amphora, and larger oak. Tasted twice.
JS 93-94 (4/2018): Beautiful and vivid dark fruits here with polished yet intense tannins and fruit balance. Juicy on the finish. Shows length and refinement already. |

The elegantly crafted, medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy, offering a fantastic intensity of crunchy red and black fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Simply stunning.

It is one of the highest percentages of Merlot in recent years partly due to restructuring of the vineyard and also higher yields (47-48hl/ha) compared to the Cabernets. With no SO2 used during fermentation and matured in 55% new oak (20hl Stockinger and Taransaud foudres and regular barriques) it is tightly wound on the nose, so I afforded the sample an hour to really open. It offers predominantly red berry fruit, wild mint and traces of dried honey, more floral scents emerging, violet and iris flower blossoming with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very well judged acidity, a very graceful and unpretentious Saint-emilion, harmonious with a touch of white pepper enhancing the precise finish. This is a classically styled Beau-Sejour Becot that conveys a brooding intensity, so I would give it several years in the cellar. Neal Martin.
JD 94-96 (5/2021): The vivid purple-hued 2020 Château Beau-Sejour Becot is another ethereal, incredibly perfumed, mineral-laced Saint-Emilion, which is common from wines from the upper, limestone plateau. Gorgeous cassis and black cherry fruits as well as floral notes, violets, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, has wonderfulness and purity, and reveals a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the finish. It’s another thrillingly complete wine from this team that shines for its purity, elegance, and complexity.
JS 96-97 (4/2021): This has a fantastic finish with crushed blackberries and raspberries and salt undertones. It’s full-bodied, yet really racy and polished with such fine, intense tannins. Love the length to this. Very distinguished and toned. Excellent energy. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. |
