WA 96 (10/2014): They appear to be immune to some of winedom’s less than intelligent trends and fads that we see from time to time, and the result is a spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary offering. Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. This full-bodied effort is a fabulous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tribute to this amazing family. It is so good now, why wait? However, I’m sure that like most vintages of Caymus, it will last for 20-25 years. Amazing!
VM 85 (10/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary from Caymus hits the palate with a rush of dark cherry, plum, Coke, chocolate, brandy, spices and sweet new oak. There is good texture, viscosity and immediacy to the fruit at first, but the sickly sweet new oak and vanillin become overpowering soon after, totally covering the fruit and attenuating the mid-palate and finish. Thankfully, the finish is short. Even by today's standards in Napa Valley, this is a decidedly sweet style of Cabernet Sauvignon quite unlike pretty much anything else I tasted this year. WA 94 (12/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has a dense opaque purple color, a kiss of blackberry and cassis fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel with ripe tannin and a long finish. It is very Caymus in its immediate accessibility, but has plenty of staying power and depth. This is lush, full, intense and pure. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.
WS 90 (6/2017): Supple and fruit-forward, this is designed to win broad appeal, with easygoing plum, black cherry, loamy earth and blueberry flavors, supported by vanilla bean-accented oak. Features just enough tannins to remind you of its pedigree. Drink now through 2026. 125,665 cases made.
JS 88 (5/2017): Lots of raisin character with berry and vanilla flavors. Full-bodied, slightly fluid and a fruity and off-dry on the finish. Not my style but some may like it. Drink now. |

| WS 92 (2/2019): This is frankly ripe, showing waves of plum and boysenberry compote flavors gliding through, liberally laced with sweet singed vanilla bean and warm anise notes. | VM 93 (9/2016): Domaine de la Côte's 2014 Pinot Noir Bloom's Field is terrific. All the elements come together effortlessly. The 2014 is lifted and translucent, as these wines always are, and yet there is more than enough depth through the mid-palate and finish to give the wine harmony and texture throughout. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with tightly wound layers of black fruits and minerals, framed by exquisitely ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. JD 100 (12/2021): Even better, and a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Elysian is a tiny cellar selection that brings even more richness and depth while not giving an inch with regard to finesse and elegance. Gorgeous ripe black fruits, tobacco leaf, crushed violets, and chocolate are just some of the nuances in this puppy, and it's full-bodied, with an expansive, multi-dimensional texture, perfect tannins, and one incredible finish. It's a more textured, fleshy wine than the base Dr. Crane and already offers pleasure, yet it will undoubtedly evolve for over two decades. This is pure Napa Valley brilliance. JD 98 (12/2021): Even better, the 225-case 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard Empyrean is a barrel selection made by winemaker Mike Smith. It has more deep, base notes of blackcurrants, cassis, ripe tobacco, black tea, and chocolate. These all carry to a full-bodied, seamless, incredibly sexy 2019 with velvety tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It already has up-front appeal, yet I have no doubt it will evolve for 20-25 years. (Drink between 2021-2046).
WA 97 (11/2021): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Empyrean is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing to release notes of blackcurrant preserves, baked black plums and mulberries, plus underlying hints of Indian spice, fragrant earth and wild sage. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house with firm, ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy.
VM 91 (1/2022): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Empyrean is powerful, dense and super-concentrated. I find the oak overdone, and the wine lacking in freshness as a result of the very pushed, ripe style. (Drink between 2022-2029). Antonio Galloni. |

JD 95 (2/2023): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard Mount Veeder has plenty of gravelly earth and loamy soil nuances as well as chocolate, red and black fruits, and savory spices. This big, medium to full-bodied, structured wine has serious tannins and is going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age, but it’s seriously good. I suspect it will see its 20th birthday in fine form. (Drink between 2027-2038).
WA 93+ (9/2022): From another part of the Chandon property, now being redeveloped under a 50-year lease, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder Estate features bold cassis fruit, with herbal, sage-like complexities. This medium to full-bodied effort is firmly tannic but ripe, with a lingering, fruit-filled finish. Give it a few years in the cellar, then drink it over the next 15 years or so. |

JD 94+ (2/2023): Another gem, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard Yountville has the vintage’s fresher, vibrant, utterly classic style as well as pure cassis fruits, notes of lead pencil shavings and tobacco, full-bodied richness, and building tannins. It’s a beast of a wine that needs to be forgotten in the cellar for 4-6 years at a minimum. (Drink starting 2027).
WA 92+ (9/2022): From a rocky knoll at the back of the Chandon site, near Dominus and Blankiet, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Estate is herbal, even close to bell pepper but not quite there. Instead, it's nicely complex, with hints of thyme and sage accenting dark fruit notes of black cherries and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, richly tannic and firmly structured, this is another Newton red wine that needs a bit of time to come around. |

WA 96 (6/2024): The 2022 G2 Vineyard is composed of 44% Grenache, 19% Mataro, 18% Graciano, 14% Syrah and 5% Carignan that spent 22 months in a mixture of 600-liter and 300-liter barrels, 77% new. The nose is deep, charred and brooding, clearly displaying this site's burly, unabashed power. The palate is a split personality that combines extreme, plush, opulent ripe fruits with a beautifully refined, elegant structure with impressive energy and clarity. The finish is coiled and long, ceaselessly expanding in its grip and dimension, which should carry this wine gracefully well past its 15th birthday.
VM 94 (6/2024): Intense, the 2022 G2 Vineyard bursts from the glass with a mix of crushed raspberry, violet pastille and autumnal spice. Though silky smooth and weighty, this wine lacks the crisp acidity expected. Instead, it offers masses of ripe wild berries, swirling around a core of intriguing mineral notes with a hint of clove. It takes on a liquid floral concentration through the finish, with subtle tannins, hints of baking spice and sweet herbs. (Drink between 2026-2036). Eric Guido. |

VM 95 (7/2024): The 2022 James Berry Vineyard is impossible to ignore. A cascade of violet and rose tones gives way to mentholated herbs and sour cherries. This is full of zesty energy, with racy acidity and crisp red and blue fruits that slowly saturate toward the close. Tactile mineral tones combine with crunchy tannins and hints of licorice. The 2022 finishes with dramatic length and hints of salted licorice. The energy here is off the charts despite the warmth of the vintage. This darling will win a lot of hearts. WA 95 (6/2024): The 2022 James Berry Vineyard is a blend of 48% Grenache, 34% Mataro, 8% Syrah, 8% Counoise and 2% Carignan aged 22 months in a mixture of 300-liter and 600-liter barrels with 12% concrete amphora. It opens with a beaming, energetic nose of red berry compote, citrus rinds and mulberry jam. The palate is rich and powerful but elegant and charming, balancing plush ripeness with coiled reserves of tension. The finish takes a savory and meaty turn, braced with quenching acidity and swelling, precise and fine tannins. Harvested before the late-vintage heat waves, this wine beautifully displays its signature deft touch and will be fascinating to watch develop in the cellar. |

JD 96 (2/2023): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve is a touch more perfumed and complex, with a beautiful mix of both red and black fruits as well as flowery incense, smoked tobacco, sandalwood, and exotic herbs. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with an elegant, seamless mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, a great core of sweet fruit, and no shortage of length on the finish. It's another brilliant, singular wine from this estate that readers will love. Drink this beauty any time over the coming 15+ years. (Drink between 2023-2039).
WA 96 (11/2021): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon explodes with crème de cassis, baked plums and Black Forest cake scents, plus hints of candied violets, clove oil, cedar and unsmoked cigars. Big, full-bodied and richly fruited, the palate has a firm and grainy frame to support the generous black fruits and spicy accents, finishing very long. |
