WA 96 (12/2011): The monumental 2009 Cote Rotie Les Rochains boasts stunning aromas of smoke, spring flowers, fried bacon, black raspberries, blackberries and cassis. This voluptuously textured, multidimensional wine is built like a skyscraper, with layers of fruit and glycerin, decent acidity and ripe tannins. Drink this profound Cote Rotie over the next 15-20 years. JLL **** (11/2009): (new 400 litre oak) Blue, purple tint in a full robe. Chocolate aroma that is persistent, solid - has a layering of black fruit, also pepper, licorice. Wide and sustained palate that holds bright fruit within the oak, the oak only apparent at the end as yet. The mid-palate is rather supple, and it goes through a plump-style stage before tha oak and ripe tannins come along in the final stages. Good, sure length to this, a wine of solid quality. “We`ll have a better idea of 2009 from spring 2010, after the winter - for now there is a belle equilibrium and tannin in the wine," Christophe Bonnefond. VM 93 (4/2012): Inky purple. Black and blue fruits, vanilla and potpourri on the seductively perfumed nose. Offers intense cassis and boysenberry flavors lifted by gentle acidity, gaining in spiciness with air. Very rich and expansive but there's good energy here as well. The finish clings with superb tenacity, the spice and blue fruit notes repeating. |

JD 95 (12/2022): The biggest wine in the lineup is unquestionably the 2020 Côte Rôtie Côte Rozier, which is all Syrah from schist soils and 45-year-old vines. It doesn't quite have the complexity and nuances of the Le Rochains, but it's a killer bottle of wine, offering loads of ripe red and black fruits, roasted herbs, violets, smoked meat, and ground pepper. This meaty, powerful Côte Rôtie has a great mouthfeel, building yet ripe tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. It needs 4-5 years in the cellar and will evolve for two decades. This wine comes from older vines near the La Landonne lieu-dit and is destemmed and brought up in 25-30% new French oak. VM 96 (12/2022): Dark, brilliant ruby. Blackberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, olive paste and vanilla qualities on the smoke-accented nose. Offers primary dark berry, mocha, fruitcake and bitter chocolate flavors that show very good depth as well as energy and pick up a spicy nuance with air. The mineral and floral notes recur on a wonderfully long, youthfully tannic finish that features a hints of salty olive and mocha. 25% new oak. Josh Raynolds. |
