VM 90 (1/2014): We start with a side-by-side comparison of Bollinger’s 2002 and 2004 Vieilles Vignes Françaises, one of my favorite Champagnes. The 2002 is spectacular, as it always is. Rich, warm and resonant, the 2002 covers the palate with seemingly endless layers of burnished, honeyed fruit and the most finessed, subtle mousse imaginable. I don’t see the 2002 making old bones, but it is flat-out great tonight. The 2004, on the other hand, is disappointing. More advanced in its flavors and with quite a bit less structure than the 2002, the 2004 is already maturing and needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 96 (7/2019): The 2000 Dom Pérignon Rosé is just starting to enter its first plateau of maturity. Sweet tobacco, mint, dried flowers, rose petal, game, licorice and tobacco add myriad shades of aromatic nuance. This is the first vintage in which former Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy started bumping up the percentage of still Pinot in his quest to make a more vinous Rosé. Naturally, some of the sheer intensity the 2000 showed as a young wine has faded. More importantly, I find the 2000 in a transitional phase where it is settling into the next stage of its life. For that reason, I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 93+ (12/2007): Green-tinted gold. Tightly wound lime and pink grapefruit aromas open slowly to reveal a gently smoky mineral and floral character, with a light kiss of green cardamom adding interest. Very fresh on the palate, with youthful citrus and green apple flavors giving way to slightly riper blood orange and pear. Finishes firm and dry, with serious grip. This only hints at its potential, and I'd advise anyone drinking it for what's in the bottle rather than on the label to stash it away for at least another five years, minimum. _x000D__x000D_ WS 90 (7/2007): There's a high-toned minty graphite accent to the aroma, with a citric edge on the palate. The structure is overlaid with lemon and bread dough notes. This is tight and crisp on the finish, so break out the sole or shellfish, or wait a few years. Best from 2008 through 2020._x000D_ |

WA 94 (3/2009): The 2000 Dom Perignon is a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apricots and pears, with sweet notes of mint and licorice that linger on the long finish. This perfumed, inviting Dom Perignon is elegance personified, and in this vintage the wine fully merits its lofty reputation. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. VM 92 (12/2008): Pale gold with a fine bead. Gently smoky aromas of lemon, pear, bay, buttered toast and lees. Round, lightly sweet orange and pear flavors are underscored by smoky minerals and given bite by refreshingly bitter lemon pith. Finishes with a lingering smokiness. This is drinking very well right now and offers classic DP toastiness. WS 91 (12/2008): Starts out round and plush, then the structure takes over. Light peach and berry flavors prevail as this plays out on the lingering finish. Give it a little time to integrate, but this should develop well. Best from 2009 through 2024. |

WS 96 (11/2006): This has really come together, showing mature aromas and flavors of citrus and berry confit, coffee and mineral. Big and robust, yet well-balanced and sophisticated, with a long, coffee-tinged finish. Absolutely delicious. Drink now through 2015. VM 95 (12/2005): Silvery gold color, with a very fine mousse. Absolutely stunning aromatics: pungent iodine, oyster shell, oatmeal, toasted wheat and bitter lemon. This smells like top-notch Chevalier-Montrachet from a great vintage. Broad and deep but also very fresh and bright, with suave, toasty citrus and smoke flavors accented by exotic spices. This expands impressively on the back, finishing with great impact, and impression of strong extract, and notes of bacon fat, toffee and minerals. |

JS 96 (10/2016): This has plenty of dried roses, rose hip and other very gently seductive perfumes on offer here such as wild cherries, some pepper, plenty of spices and pink, musky marshmallows. The autolysis is still very discreet, although the fruits have changed to another phase of more savory characters and are really delicate. This is undoubtedly a restrained Champagne on a very slow path of evolution. The palate's smoothly layered with the phenolics shaping it in the first phase of the palate, casting a long tube-like form. The core is composed of dried strawberries, some spiced cherries, some dried peaches and pink grapefruit to boot. It then gives way to fresh acidity as it delivers a really thrilling and mouth-watering finish with some toasty hazelnuts and flamed orange zest to close. Superb focus, and the vintage character of the acidity and length is stunning. Beautifully preserved in the cellars for some twenty-odd years. What a treat! Drink now and for another decade or more. This will age on cork very nicely. Truly a superb expression of Dom Perignon Rosé. |

JS 92 (10/2017): A more savory style with pinot noir leading the blend (70%) ahead of chardonnay. This has an array of woody spices, red fruits and spice on the nose. The palate delivers forest berries and woody notes. Grapefruit and a spicy edge to finish. Drink now. WS 92 (10/2017): Poached pear, candied lemon zest and biscuit notes ride the lacy mousse of this well-cut, aperitif-style Champagne. Hints of honey and spice linger on the finish. Disgorged May 2016. Brut Grande Cuvee 166th Edition Champagne (1.5 L) Original Gift Box |
$445 |

|
WA 96+ (11/2018): Compared to Krug's 160th edition, the bright golden-yellow colored NV Grande Cuvée 166ème Édition (ID117010) is still a baby that shows the chalky and fruity features of a young white Burgundy intermixed with notes of Schwarzwälder Kirsch (dark cherries with black chocolate) and floral (ammonia) flavors on the pure, fresh and elegant yet intense and still yeasty brioche nose with its ripe apple aromas and refreshingly bright (lemon juice) overtones. Round, wide and very elegant yet also straight and tense on the palate, this 2010-dominated cuvée is very delicate, fresh and chalky but also dense and lush in its vinous texture. The finish is well-structured, fresh and persistent, indicating great complexity and vibrancy. However, I would wait at least another three years, during which time the 166th edition will gain even more finesse and quiet. The 166ème Édition is composed of 140 wines from 13 different harvests between 1998 and 2010, and it's a blend of 45% Pinot Noir with 39% Chardonnay and 16% Pinot Meunier, the latter of which provides the vivacity that the Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs surprisingly didn't have in 2010, a vintage that was marked by its "tumultuous climate," as Eric Lebel writes. WS 95 (11/2018): This mouthwatering Champagne feels like a swathe of raw silk on the palate, where flavors of sun-dried white cherry, toast and Meyer lemon peel are accented by expressive saffron, ground coffee and mandarin orange peel aromas. Long and racy on the honey-, spice- and smoke-laced finish. Disgorged winter 2017. Drink now through 2025. VM 94 (7/2018): The MV Grande Cuvée 166ème, based on the 2010 vintage, offers good depth, but it also comes across as a bit angular and in need of time in bottle to soften. Certainly, next to the 2008 and 2009 editions, the 2010 is a touch rough around the edges. Even so, there is good freshness and verve to the bright citrus, mineral and floral flavors. Antonio Galloni. JS 94 (9/2018): Complexity from the very outset with praline, honey, grilled-hazelnut and nougat aromas leading to a fresh background of peaches, lemons and grapefruit. Chardonnay leads on the nose for now. The palate has finesse, fleshy appeal and terrific focus. Long, powerful and seamless. A strong edition of Grande Cuvée. Drink or hold. |

JG 90 (7/2017): The current release of Lombard “Blanc de Noirs” Extra Brut is from the base year of 2012 and is composed entirely of pinot noir. The wine spent more than three years aging sur latte and was finished with a dosage of four grams per liter. The wine offers up an excellent bouquet of white peach, patissière, a fine base of soil tones, dried flowers and a hint of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a good core, slightly coarse mousse, brisk acids and fine focus and grip on the long and complex finish. This needs just a bit more bottle age to round into prime drinking mode, but it has depth and dimension on both the nose and palate and will be very tasty when it fully blossoms. 2018-2030. |

JS 91 (5/2019): Fruity and intense on the nose with dried red currants but with some real complexity below including bread dough. Full-bodied and flavorful on the palate but with the acidity really lifting this through. Drink now. JG 90+ (7/2017): The new release of Champagne Lombard’s non-vintage Extra Brut is from the base year of 2009 and is a blend of forty percent chardonnay and a sixty percent combination of pinot noir and pinot meunier. The wine was finished with a dosage of four grams per liter and offers up an excellent bouquet of apple, a touch of nectarine, lovely soil tones, fresh-baked bread and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a fine core, very good soil signature, pinpoint bubbles and a long, focused and well-balanced finish. The extended aging sur latte has given this wine a lovely layer of secondary complexity and the wine is drinking very well today. 2017-2030. |

2002 |
Cristal Champagne |
$340 |

|
WA 98 (6/2018): Roederer's 2002 Cristal is a fabulous wine! Originally released in 2009, it was re-released in March this year—and was sold out in a very short time. The Cristal I tasted at Roederer in May 2018 was disgorged in 2010, after seven years sur lie. Its amazing richness and concentration makes it a forerunner of the 2015 and follows the 1999. Only two times—2002 and 2015—the fruit from all 42 plots reserved for Cristal was used for the Cristal. "I couldn't do any better blend than the one assembling all the 42 plots," says Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, stressing that at that time only two hectares were farmed biodynamically. As a result of the conversion to biodynamic farming, Lécaillon promised himself the production of even more beautiful, vital and balanced wines, and you can feel his satisfaction whenever he speaks of the cuvées that are yet to come such as 2012 and 2015, the latter of which he calls "the new 2002." Back to history: the nose of the 2002 Cristal shows a deep, ripe and elegant fruit with aromas of white chocolate, wet chalk, wild vanilla and pepper (typical for 2002) as well as terroir-driven truffle notes. Intense and very elegant in the mouth, this is a ripe, rich and concentrated yet also pure and vital Cristal with great finesse, elegance and mineral complexity. It's a sublime Champagne right now, although it's more wine than Champagne. JS 98 (9/2018): A re-release of the original 2010 disgorgement. Super fine, super fresh and super savory aromas of chalky stones with hints of flowers, white almonds, lemon peel and grapefruit. The palate has intense, mouth-filling, lemon-curd flavor. Very powerful, very concentrated and very expressive. Smooth finish that’s full of life, leaving a bright, white cherry note. Drink in 2022. VM 98 (7/2018): As hard as it may seem to believe, the 2002 Cristal Rosé (Re-Release) is even better than the Blanc. Utterly explosive in the glass, with soaring aromatics and tremendous palate presence, the 2002 dazzles from the very first taste. With time in the glass the 2002 grows effortlessly, showing myriad shades of nuance with each successive taste. I am reminded of the vertical I did of Cristal Rosé here a few years ago. Yes, the Rosé is expensive and rare. But it also delivers the goods. And then some. Antonio Galloni. WS 92 (2/2009): A suave customer, with hints of citrus, berry and coffee. Harmonious and refined, with freshness and a bright structure. The finish shows a lot of potential, with a mouthwatering aftertaste. Better than previously reviewed. Drink now through 2030. |

JS 96 (3/2012): The complexity and youthful freshness here makes a striking Champagne that offers immense pleasure and a certain richness and depth that reflects the style of the vintage with some warmth reflected in the wine. The nose has rich citrus and stone fruits, some white flowers, light creamy honey notes and fresh sweet pastry, it has a toasty thread that has built quickly in the wine. Plenty of body on the palate, it has a wealth of assertive citrus and more exotic fruits too, the power and concentration undeniable, the length impressive and the balance impeccable. Already great drinking here. Slightly higher chardonnay component at around 45%. VM 94 (12/2012): Bright yellow-gold. Heady floral-accented citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, with smoky mineral and floral overtones adding complexity. Velvety and chewy in texture, offering deep, juicy orange and poached pear flavors and suave honey and chamomile nuances. Blends precision with power, finishing with a distinct mineral quality and excellent persistence. Josh Raynolds. WS 94 (11/2012): Vibrant and mouthwatering, this offers a range of patisserie pear and apple fruit, candied lemon zest, pastry dough and marzipan notes set on a finely detailed texture, which imparts a great deal of finesse. The lasting finish echoes a smoky mineral note. Drink now through 2025. WA 93 (11/2012): The 2005 Cristal stands out for its exceptional inner perfume and elegance. Soft, delicate and pretty, the 2005 is a relatively immediate Cristal with all of the signatures very much in the right place. The 2005 doesn't have the opulence of the 2002 nor the focus of the 2004, but it is a very pretty, if somewhat small-scaled version of this iconic Champagne. I would drink the 2005 while the 2002 and 2004 age. Although Cristal has an impeccable track record when it comes to aging, personally I would not push it with the 2005. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. BH 93 (10/2015): Like the 2006 this is notably ripe with plenty of yeast, brioche and orchard fruit characters but in this case there is no tropicality. There is fine mid-palate density to the relatively powerful and very rich flavors that possess excellent complexity on the lingering finish that really fans out as it sits in the mouth. Like many 2005s this is not an especially refined vintage for Cristal nor does it possess the effervescent punch it usually does. Those aspects duly noted, this certainly cannot be faulted in terms of richness and complexity and for my taste, this is probably drinking about as well as it's going to though I underscore that it should drink well for many years to come. Drink now+. |

Cristal Champagne |

|
VM 98 (12/2019): The 2012 Cristal is another absolutely stellar wine this flight of recent releases. Rich, vinous and beautifully textured, the 2012 has been nothing short of magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. In the glass, the 2012 is radiant and luscious, yet it possesses remarkable transparency and striking aromatic depth. Light tropical notes develop in the glass, giving the 2012 a real feeling of exotic beauty. The 2012 is the first vintage of Cristal done with 100% organically-farmed fruit, an approach introduced gradually starting with the 2007 that has profoundly changes Cristal, especially in its aromatic breadth. Two thousand twelve is the vintage where endless trials and experiments in farming and winemaking are fully realized. The 2012 is just stunning. It’s as simple as that. Dosage is just over 7 grams per liter, the lowest it has even been for Cristal. Antonio Galloni. JS 98 (7/2019): Such attractive, fresh, floral aromas here with fine bread, hints of white almonds and a lemon edge. White cherries and strong, chalky minerals, too. The palate has a very composed feel. Seamless and quite silky texture with effortless length and flow. Very fluid and composed. Very late, warming almond flavors. This is very long and smooth with a velvety finish. Super long pinot weight. Resolved and drinkable, but will age so well. WA 97+ (12/2019): Aromas of clear honey, crisp green orchard fruit, white peach, pastry cream and dried white flowers introduce the 2012 Cristal, a full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine that's built for the cellar. Broader, more textural and more muscular than the 2008 Cristal, with seemingly even greater reserves of structuring dry extract, the 2012 is incisive and searingly chalky. This is the first Cristal produced exclusively from organically farmed fruit, and it marks the opening of a new chapter for Louis Roderer. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, vinified without malolactic fermentation and disgorged with 7.5 grams per liter dosage. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has once again excelled himself. |

WS 93 (12/2019): Graphite and spice notes lace the creamed white cherry and strawberry fruit flavors of this firm and finely meshed rosé. Lacy in texture, with a minerally underpinning and accents of herb and anise on the lasting finish. Disgorged February 2018. Drink now through 2029. VM 91+ (7/2019): Like the Blanc, the 2012 Grand Vintage Rosé is tightly wound and reticent. Bright red cherry, cranberry, rose petal, cedar, flowers, mint and crushed rocks are all laced together in this finely sculpted Champagne. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2012 for at least a few years, as it is nowhere near ready to drink. The blend is 42% Pinot Noir (of which 13% is still red Pinot), 35% Chardonnay and 23% Meunier. Antonio Galloni. JS 91 (7/2019): A fruity and earth rosé with sliced cooked strawberries and fruit tea. Full body. More like a light red. Flavorful finish. Drink now. WA 90 (4/2019): Disgorged in February 2018 with five grams per liter dosage, the 2012 Extra Brut Grand Vintage Rosé bursts with expressive aromas of cherries, red berries, peaches and marzipan. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a similarly broad and fleshy profile to its white counterpart, but with more phenolic structure from the 13% still Pinot Noir in the blend, which lends it a seemingly drier, chalkier finish even though the two cuvées saw the same dosage. The more-concentrated regular Extra Brut has the edge over the Rosé, but this is a creditable effort. |

VM 90 (12/2019): The NV (2016) Brut Blanc de Blancs Delos Grand Cru is the same wine as the Extra Brut, but with dosage of 7 grams per liter. Pear, brioche, spice and orchard fruit overtones all race out of the glass. The higher dosage gives the Brut a bit more immediacy, but also results in the impression of some loss of persistence through the mid-palate and into the finish. Even so, the Delos offers plenty of appeal. Dosage: 7 gr/L. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 70 (10/2015): Wet wool and yeast flavors (but no fruit) dominate the bouquet of the 2003 Les Clos Pompadour Brut Magnum, and the wine is not more attractive on the palate, which is delicately structured but drying, short, flat and astringent. VM 95+ (12/1999): Knockout aromas of lemon, lime, toffee, grilled nuts, nutmeg and minerals; conveys a strong impression of soil character. Great thickness and brightness in the mouth; offers a compelling combination of lemon and orange citricity and complex yeast autolysis notes, and near-perfect harmony of young and maturing elements. This Outstanding, elegant Champagne shows an extraordinary creamy richness yet is still rather folded in on itself. Has the sheer structure and grip to develop in bottle for a decade or two. Finishes with great nutty length. WS 95 (11/2000): A wonderful, mature Champagne, offering toast, mushroom, honey and citrus aromas and flavors that evolve into a long walnut aftertaste. Its richness is offset by bracing acidity, yet not quite fully integrated. Full-bodied and aristocratic. Drink now through 2005. |
