Il Fauno di Arcanum Toscana IGT |
$39 |

WA 93 (4/2021): Ripe, bold and soft, the Tenuta di Arceno 2017 Il Fauno di Arcanum is a hot-vintage blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Despite the difficult conditions of the vintage, which included spells of extreme heat and dryness, this wine hits an especially pretty balance that underlines the care given to preserving the best qualities of the fruit. It pours from the bottle with a darkly concentrated appearance and displays blackberry, plum, spice, tar and leather. There is softness here for sure, yet the wine's structure and carefully engineered construction is intact. |

Barbera d’Alba |

VM 93 (12/2015): The 2013 Barbera d'Alba is a gorgeous, super-classic wine. Medium in body, but with plenty of depth, the 2013 presents an intriguing combination of deep Barbera fruit, bright acidity and floral aromatics. Drink this beautifully layered, exquisite Barbera over the next handful of years. The 2013 is bound to put a smile on the face of this estate's many fans. (Drink between 2015-2023). Antonio Galloni. |

Brunello di Montalcino |

VM 86 (11/2020): The 2016 Campo alle Noci Brunello di Montalcino from Villa Poggio Salvi shows notes of pine resin, caraway and sour citrus with just a hint of dried strawberry. It’s silky and pliant in feel with a pretty display of ripe red and hints of blue fruits, maintaining thrust through zesty acids and inner spice. There’s a tug of grippy tannins here which resonate below an air of menthol and licorice. This is an interesting effort, yet the Campo alle Noci never really comes into focus. (Drink between 2022-2028). Eric Guido. |

Canalicchio di Sopra |

Brunello di Montalcino |

VM 95 (1/2025): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is vividly fresh and pure, with a gorgeous bouquet of black cherries, incense, sage and a whiff of spearmint. It impresses with its purity, soft textures and vibrantly ripe red berry fruits, guided by zesty acidity and underscored by saline minerals and nuances of spice. The slightest hint of sous bois is the only tell of the 2004's 20 years as a subtle tug of residual tannins and a tinge of licorice linger. Impossible to ignore! (Drink between 2024-2030). Eric Guido. WA 93 (6/2009): Canalicchio di Sopra’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is an intense, full-bodied red that is simply captivating for its seamless dark fruit and superb depth. Rich, round and delicious, this racy Brunello offers plenty of dark fruit with sweet scents of licorice, leather and spices that linger on the long, refined finish. Clean notes of minerality give the wine superb balance. This is easily the most elegant, refined Brunello I have tasted yet from Canalicchio di Sopra and is one of the highlights in 2004. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |

VM 92 (6/2009): The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark, brooding expression of black cherries, menthol, licorice and flowers. The wine possesses lovely detail and clarity, in a somewhat compact, firm style. With air the wine fleshes out nicely. A final floral note gives the wine a sense of lift on the finish. (Drink between 2013-2022). Antonio Galloni. |

Barbera d’Alba Vigna Martina Bin-Soiled Label |
$30 |

WA 90 (6/2013): The 2010 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Martina opens with vibrant dark colors and thick concentration that spreads like silk over the palate. A dusty mineral tone at the back, brimstone and pencil shavings, bring a feeling of sharpness and focus to the wine. Yet, the sheer generosity and fullness of the wine is its overriding factor. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018. |

Fattoria di Basciano |

I Pini Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT |
$30 |
1 |
WA 91 (12/2020): The Fattoria di Basciano 2018 I Pini is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah aged in oak for 18 months. The wine is concentrated and rich, showing black and purple fruit aromas of plum and blackberry. As the wine opens in the glass, it starts to show more spice definition and a hint of campfire ash or burnt ember. This full-bodied Tuscan red would pair with meats or sausage grilled over an open flame. Drink between 2020-2026. |

Le Macchiole |
2015 |
Messorio IGT Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$195 |

WA 97 (5/2019): The 2015 Messorio is a true tribute to Merlot. It's not easy to faithfully render the distinctive characteristics of this grape, within such a tight margin of error, but the winemaking team at Le Macchiole has deftly achieved exactly that. With sourcing from the Puntone vineyard, Le Macchiole wanted to achieve less density yet more aromas of skin. The wine has a homogeneous feel, with huge generosity and fullness, and it delivers big, ripe cherry tones with so much luscious fruit and delineated persistence. VM 96 (3/2019): The 2015 Messorio captures the Macchiole style beautifully. Ample, creamy and voluptuous, with tremendous depth, the 2015 has it all. Raspberry jam, chocolate, new leather, licorice and dark spice all meld together effortlessly. Even at this early stage, the 2015 is simply impeccable in its balance. The new 100% new oak and the tannins are already very nicely integrated. Hints of the exoticism Messorio will ultimately develop in bottle are starting to appear, but the 2015 needs more time to be at its finest. (Drink between 2023-2035). Antono Galloni. |

Barolo Le Vigne |
$275 |
2 |
VM 98+ (2/2020): The 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is brilliant and explosive in the glass, with tons of brightness, energy and tension. Classically austere, the 2016 is going to take a few years to be at its best, and yet the wine is so arrestingly beautiful today. A mix of freshly cut and dried flowers, mint and pine add an intriguing upper register. In 2016, Le Vigne is finely chiseled and sculpted from start to finish. Bright saline notes add a closing kick of freshness. Antonio Galloni. |

Massolino |
2016 |
Barolo |
$55 |

VM 92 (2/2020): Massolino's 2016 Barolo is a gorgeous wine that brings together all the best qualities of the year. Bright and pliant, yet with terrific structural intensity, the 2016 is a wonderfully complete, harmonious Barolo that will delight readers for the next 15 to 20 years. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice add striking shades of nuance. Massolino's straight Barolo is a fabulous wine in its peer group. Vineyard sources include Briccolina, Collareto, Brolio and Le Turne. |

Paolo Bea |
2004 |
Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco Slightly Raised Cork |
$75 |
1 |
VM 92 (4/2009): The 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco Pagliaro is more linear than the 2005 and perhaps just a touch more advanced as well. Sweet tobacco, herb and earthiness aromas waft out of the glass followed by a perfumed coe of fruit that emerges over time. A long, refined finish rounds out the wine nicely. The 2004 is more ethereal than the 2005, but it too is quite beautiful, not to mention a terrific effort in what was a challenging vintage for this property. Interestingly, what seems to come through most in tasting the 2005 and 2004 side by side are the qualities of this vineyard first, and those of vintage second. The 2004 Pagliaro was macerated on the skins for 48 days and spent 32 months in large, neutral casks. (Drink between 2013-2019). Antonio Galloni. |

Barolo Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$69 |

VM 90 (12/2011): Moderately saturated medium red. Sexy red cherry and cinnamon aromas. Sweet and silky, with nicely integrated acidity framing the cherry, raspberry and tobacco flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins. Stephen Tanzer. |

Podere Sapaio |
2012 |
Sapaio Bolgheri Superiore Bin-Soiled Label |
$35 |

WA 89 (5/2019): The 2012 Bolgheri Superiore Sapaio is flatter and less exciting at this time in its evolution. This Tuscan red blend shows moderate dimension, although it does deliver a good amount of black fruit, tar and spicy tobacco. There is less acidity on the close, which contributes to the one-dimensional feel of the wine. |

Barbaresco |
$59 |

VM 94 (11/2019): The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can't remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol licorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine! Antonio Galloni. |

Langhe Nebbiolo |
$35 |

WA 91 (6/2019): The 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo is an elegant expression that shows tonic and fresh fruit with wild berry, rose hip and tilled earth. This wine excels in terms of presenting Nebbiolo in its most pure and naked state. This vintage shows an extra level of concentration and textural richness with a clear tannic bite on the close. |

Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) |
2015 |
Cont’Ugo Bolgheri Scuffed Label; Wine-Stained Label |
$55 |
1 |
VM 92 (3/2019): The 2015 Cont'Ugo is a dark, sumptuous beauty. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate and dark spice infuse this voluptuous Merlot from Antinori's Guado al Tasso estate. Silky, plush tannins and soft curves add to the wine's considerable pleasure. (Drink between 2018-2023). Antonio Galloni. |

Tua Rita |
2015 |
Redigaffi |
$219 |
1 |
JS 99-100 (10/2017): This is an extremely intense and dense Redigaffi yet it remains lively and agile. Full body and powerful tannins that are polished and long. It goes on for minutes. So compacted and structured but always reserved. Acid balance is just right. Can't wait to taste it in bottle. Made from organic grapes. WA 97 (11/2017): No surprise, Tua Rita delivers yet another unbelievable edition of its legendary Merlot from Coastal Tuscany. The 2015 Redigaffi is a blockbuster, a beautiful and expressive blockbuster at that. This vintage delivers a unique level of intensity and power that is very much linked to the easily ripened fruit obtained in this warm and sunny vintage. Despite that inner bulk and power, the wine reveals an elegant sense of harmony and depth. Etched mineral or graphite notes segue to black fruit, spice, leather, mocha and toasted espresso bean. The wine is structured and firm in terms of mouthfeel. VM 95 (4/2018): Just bottled a few weeks ago, the 2016 Redigafi is rich, powerful and explosive, with serious depth and volume in all of its dimensions. A host of chocolate, mocha, espresso, licorice and smoke overtones give the wine nuance to match its intense, super-ripe purplish and black-fleshed fruit. Antonio Galloni. |

2018 |
Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$18 |
1 |
VM 91 (9/2021): The 2018 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne marries the natural richness of Barbera with the intensely mineral, savory qualities that are such signatures of the wines of Asti. Crushed rocks, mint, sage, plum and ripe red cherry abound. This is a great Barbera from Asti, and maybe an even better value. (Drink between 2021-2028). Antonio Galloni. WA 91 (7/2020): The Vietti 2018 Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne is a vibrant red wine teeming with energy and electricity. Those berry tones of cassis, cranberry and black currant pop from the glass. Primary fruit remains the focus, but that fruit is nicely framed by contours of spice and toasted nut. The grapes harvested for this wine represent a second selection from some of the same parcels that make the Barbera d'Asti La Crena. This cool-vintage expression is just lovely, informal and fun. |
