2018 Vincent Paris Cornas

Today we are thrilled to offer you the 2018 vintage from one of Cornas' stars, Vincent Paris. Paris is still considered one of the 'new' producers in Cornas, despite having 20 vintages under his belt! Nephew to the legendary Robert Michel, Pairs manages 8 hectares of vineyard (6 of which are owned) and produces a miserly 1,600 cases or so of Cornas a year. His style is classic and concentrated - he prunes heavily to 4 bunches per vine (concentrating the plants energy), ferments with a large percentage of stems at low temperatures and ages the wines in neutral oak. The resulting wines are textbook Cornas - vibrant, mineral-driven, deep and concentrated - one smell and you immediately know where the wine came from. Two wines are on offer today: Granit 30 and Granit 60. The Granit 30 is arguably the greatest value in the entire Rhône Valley, a textbook Cornas for under $35 a bottle...there are Côtes du Rhônes that sell for this (and more) that can't hold a candle to it - grab some today! The old vine Granit 60 is also an incredible value that will age beautifully and can hold its own against Cornas' greatest wines. Don't let these slip away!! The 2018 vintage ended up being a hot, dry one after a wet start that led to much disease pressure - though the steep slopes of Cornas fared much better than many other areas, and the rain served to bring back the water levels to more normal measurements. Most of the rest of the growing season was warm and dry, and near-perfectly ripe grapes were harvested under good conditions. The 2018s are a touch more concentrated than the 2017s and they have more freshness than the preceding vintage. As Jeb Dunnuck writes, "..this is another sensational vintage for the region. 2018 appears to check in just behind the likes of 2015 and 2010, yet it isn’t far off, and I think will be a step up over 2017."
