Today at Flickinger Wines we would like to showcase our current offerings from the Côte Rôtie region of France. All wines available below are in-stock. Côte Rôtie is the first major appellation you’ll encounter when traversing the majestic Northern Rhone. Situated in south-eastern France, Côte Rôtie’s vineyards are just south of Vienne, approximately 35 kilometers from Lyon. Although the area under vine is larger than 20 years ago, Côte Rôtie is still a small (just over 500 hectares under vine) viticultural zone. Only the villages of Ampuis, Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône, and Tupin-et-Semons are entitled to market wines under the appellation banner. Strict terroir delineation is at the heart of the winegrowing culture in Côte Rôtie Vineyards thrive in the region’s continental climate, with warm (but rarely excessively hot) summers and cold winters. It is noticeably cooler and more inclement than the southern Rhone, particularly in winter. Nevertheless, the finest sites in the appellation boast an exceptional terroir that is the envy of all across the Rhone Valley. These breathtakingly steep terraces, lined with free-draining metamorphic rock, reflect the sun’s heat into the vine canopy. This helps Syrah reach good phenolic maturity levels, even in cooler years. The southeast-facing aspect also ensures that the sun exposes most vines all day. A visit to Côte Rôtie during harvest time offers a spectacular sight, with the need for pulleys and even monorails to transport boxes of grapes from these incredibly steep slopes to the winery.

	VM 94-96 (6/2018): Inky, vivid purple. Highly perfumed, mineral-laced black and blue fruit, violet, smoked meat and incense qualities on the nose. Fleshy, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed yet surprisingly lively boysenberry, candied licorice, spicecake and violet flavors enlivened by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Deftly blends richness and finesse and finishes extremely long and youthfully tannic, leaving floral pastille, star anise and dark berry liqueur notes behind. Josh Raynolds.

	VM 91-93 (4/2012): Inky purple. Complex, deeply pitched nose combines black raspberry, licorice, dark chocolate, violet, tobacco and cracked pepper; emphatically syrah. Dense and powerful but with very good definition and energy to its black and blue fruit, spice and anise flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and impressive length. 	JD 89-91 (2/2022): Starting with the 2020 Côte Rôtie La Chana, which includes 7% Viognier, this has a ripe, up-front, charming style as well as classic Côte Rôtie black raspberry fruits mixed with spice and bacon fat nuances. It's going to drink nicely right out of the gate.   WA 89-91 (1/2022): Blended from several parcels and barrels for my evaluation, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Chana usually contains approximately 7% Viognier and sees no new wood. It shows attractive aromas of raspberries and apricot on the nose, a medium to full-bodied feel on the palate and a savory finish that nicely balances mouthwatering acids and softly dusty tannins. It should drink well for the rest of this decade.

	JD 91-93 (2/2022): A blend of multiple sites, the Côte Rôtie La Germine can be thought of as the classic Côte Rôtie of the domaine, and the 2020 is 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier aged 20 months in barrel and demi-muid. Lots of darker cherry and raspberry fruits as well as notes of peppery herbs, sandalwood, and floral notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, wonderfully textured, balanced Côte Rôtie that offers present tannins, the vintage's fresh yet ripe, elegant style, and outstanding length on the finish. Drink this charmer on release and any time over the following 15 years.   WA 91-93 (1/2022): The 2020 Cote Rotie La Germine—assembled from various barrels—offers up a harmonious blend of red raspberries and black olives on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky textured and long, with just a hint of dark chocolate on the lingering finish. It nicely captures the brothers' preference for soft, elegant wines.

	JD 93 (5/2025): Incorporating 3% Viognier, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Germine reveals a concentrated, rich, nicely structured profile of ripe black and blue fruits, crushed stone, and floral, sappy, gamey nuances. Medium to full-bodied, with plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish, it was vinified with 20% whole clusters and aged 20 months in barrels and demi-muids (15% new). It, too, should have 10-15 years of longevity. Drink 2025-2035.   VM 89 (1/2025): The 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Germine evokes a fairly simple aromatic profile, opening with red and black cherry notes alongside touches of violet and spice box. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2022 is an elegant, early approachable Côte-Rôtie culminating with brightness on the moderately long finish. (Drink between 2025-2030). NIcholas Greinacher.

	WA 92-95 (1/2022): The 2020 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge comes from 1.5 hectares in the gneiss-laden northern portion of the lieu-dit, and includes no Viognier. Purple raspberries and black olives cavort on the nose, framed by subtle notes of baking spices. It's medium to full-bodied, expansive, rich and silky, with a long, elegant finish. It should be drinkable on release, yet cellar well for at least a decade.   JD 91-93 (2/2022): The 2020 Côte Rôtie Maison Rouge is terrific, offering ample black raspberry and darker berry fruits as well as spring flowers and peppery spice nuances. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium-bodied and has a supple, seamless texture, impressive tannins, and a great finish. It's unquestionably an outstanding wine, and I'd be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming 10-15 years.

	JD 96 (5/2025): Coming from a more granitic site in the southern part of the appellation, the deeper ruby/plum-hued 2022 Côte Rôtie Maison-Rouge offers up a stunningly pure, layered, medium to full-bodied style intermixed with ample red, blue, and black fruits, along with classic floral, gamey, and mint herb aromatics. Made from 100% Syrah and aged 20 months in 40% new French oak, it shows fine yet building tannins and a great finish. Drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2025-2040.   VM 91 (1/2025): Graphite, shy vanilla, cedar, black cherry and meaty subtleties introduce the 2022 Côte-Rôtie Maison-Rouge. Checking in at 13% alcohol, it easily outperforms the La Germine of the same vintage, offering more flavor concentration, length and refinement. The classic 2022 draws to a close with a juicy finish balanced by fresh acidity. (Drink between 2026-2032). Nicholas Greincaher.

	JD 96-98 (2/2022): A more finesse-driven, elegant example of this cuvée, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Mouline includes a solid amount of Viognier and will see a total of four years in new French oak. Classic La Mouline notes of black raspberries, spring flowers, incense, and pepper give way to a medium to full-bodied, silky, incredibly elegant wine that will shine with only short-term cellaring.   VM 96-98 (5/2020): Bright, highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, violet and exotic spice aromas, along with a wild touch of blood orange. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit flavors that stain the palate while showing little in the way of excess weight. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a building floral note, even tannins and a late jolt of five-spice powder. Josh Raynolds.   WA 94-96 (2/2022): While just as aromatic and charming on the nose—where ephemeral floral notes join ripe cherries—as previous years, the 2019 Cote Rotie La Mouline isn't quite as impressive on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and caressing, without the same power, yet it's supremely elegant.

	WA 94-96 (2/2022): Notes of espresso and barrel char ride above notes of purple raspberries in the 2020 Cote Rotie La Turque. It's full-bodied, with ample concentration and length, but it seems to lack a bit of depth compared to other recent vintages. Let's see what next year brings.   JD 97-99 (3/2024): The 2020 Côte Rôtie La Turque brings a touch more mid-palate density and offers a straighter, more inward bouquet of cassis, graphite, smoked meats, and iron, with subtle gamey, bloody background nuances. It too is full-bodied and has a concentrated, structured mouthfeel, remarkable purity, and a killer finish.   VM 96-99 (3/2024): The 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Turque is shaping up to be terrific. Bold and supremely complex, it unwinds with expressive mocha, ripe black fruits, cured meat, pencil shavings and cedarwood nuances. Refreshing acidity neatly balances the elevated flavor concentration, all framed by a firm yet polished tannic corset. Simply put, the 2020 La Turque is a wine of class and precision, with notable inner energy and verticality. Nicholas Greinacher.

	VM 87-90 (1/2001): 60% new oak, higher than in the past for this cuvee Bright medium ruby. Oaky nose hints at blackberry, fresh blood and goat cheese. Juicy and intensely flavored, with firm acidity giving the flavors spine and grip. Slightly tarry oak tannins are nicely buffered by the wine material. Quite persistent on the aftertaste. 	JD 94 (12/2022): I loved the 2018 Côte Rôtie Terrasses, which is slightly more supple and elegant than both the 2017 and 2019. Offering darker red, almost blue fruits as well as peppery game, violets, and crushed stone-like minerality, it's medium to full-bodied, has the vintage's pure, balanced, harmonious style, supple tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't have the structure or mid-palate density of the 2019, but is a gorgeously complex, nuanced Côte Rôtie that needs another 3-5 years of bottle age and will evolve gracefully.

	JD 93 (5/2024): The 2020 Côte Rôtie Terrasses is terrific and shows the forward, sexy style of the vintage while still being classic Côte Rôtie! Black raspberries, peppery herbs, spring flowers, and a kiss of game all define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied, with a supple, silky mouthfeel, soft tannins, and a great finish. It stays light on its feet and has a good sense of freshness, and it should evolve gracefully for a decade or more.   WA 91-94 (1/2022): Tasting through several parcels/barrels, the 2020 Cote Rotie Terrasses looks to be a solid effort, marked by slightly vegetal notes up front and almost sherbet-like red fruit flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with decent texture and length, it should be approachable young, with the ability to age at least a decade.

	VM 91 (2/2015): Bright purple. Ripe dark berry and violet aromas are lifted and sharpened by notes of cracked pepper and smoky minerals. On the palate, gently sweet, deep black and blue fruit flavors pick up energy and spiciness with aeration. Finishes on a gently tannic note, with strong smoky persistence. (Drink between 2016-2024). 	VM 92 (3/2016): Brilliant ruby. Sexy, mineral-accented dark berry and floral pastille scents show excellent clarity and hints of olive and cola. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering juicy black and blue fruit flavors and zesty cracked pepper and allspice nuances. Shows an impressive blend of power and finesse on a very long, youthfully tannic finish that leaves a lively blueberry note behind. Josh Raynolds.

	VM 90 (1/1999): Deep ruby. Perfumed blackberry, violet and oak spice aromas. Quite intense and bright in the mouth, with flavors similar to the aromas; complicating mineral and brown spice notes emerged with aeration.
