JD 94 (1/2021): I was thrilled to taste the 2016 Rothwell Hyde as it was the only 2016 I hadn’t tasted. This was a great, great vintage for Napa and this quality shows, with the wine possessing a youthful, vibrant hue as well as classic notes of crème de cassis, violets, chocolate, and truffly earth. It’s concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and elegant on the palate. It’s going to evolve for two decades, but it sure offers loads of pleasure today. VM 94 (1/2020): The 2016 Rothwell Hyde is a gorgeous wine to drink now, for readers who can find it. Soft and elegant with silky tannins and fabulous balance, the 2016 has so much to offer already. Black cherry, mocha, espresso, licorice, lavender and spice contribute aromatic nuance, but more than anything else, the 2016 is racy and open-knit, with tons of immediacy. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97 (1/2019): Based on 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, the 2016 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard was brought up all in new French oak, which has been absorbed beautifully. With terrific intensity in its blue fruits and floral aromatics, this terrific 2016 is full-bodied, powerful, and layered, with ultra-fine tannins that emerge with time in the glass. It has the purity and elegance of the vintage front and center, yet backs it up with both texture and depth. In short, it’s another rock star wine from this estate. |

JD 97 (1/2019): From a steep hillside in Oakville, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard offers a more savory, masculine, layered style as well as a huge nose of red and black fruits, dried herbs, chocolate, and earth. It hits the palate with a full-bodied, mouthfilling style that carries plenty of tannins, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and a great finish. I like it today, yet it’s going to continue drinking brilliantly for two decades. |

The Grand Daddy Beckstoffer To Kalon Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$245 |

JD 97 (5/2023): As always, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy comes from a parcel of Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a pretty, pure, full-bodied, balanced profile as well as beautiful aromatics of ripe plums, cassis, spice, and flowery incense. The tannins are perfectly ripe, and it has a great finish, with no hard edges. This fabulous To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon will evolve for another three decades. WA 98+ (10/2018): Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy comes charging out of the glass with gregarious scents of blackberry pie, warm cassis, black raspberries and Black Forest cake plus hints of camphor, cigar box, pencil lead and incense. Full-bodied, super intense and opulently fruited in the mouth, it delivers a powerful black fruit core with a firm yet plush frame and very long, multilayered finish. VM 95+ (12/2018): A big, structured wine, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is going to need a number of years to come into its own, as the tannins are forbidding. Iron, smoke, savory herb, tobacco and leather are backed up by beams of supporting structure. This backward, reticent Cabernet Sauvignon will require patience. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 100 (5/2023): I thought the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The O.G. was a perfect wine when I tasted it on release, and I continue to hold that belief. Pure perfection in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a magical bouquet of crème de cassis, darker currants, iron, tapenade, violets, and chocolate that gives way to a full-bodied, deep, concentrated, powerful 2016 displaying the vintage's pure, focused, utterly classic style front and center. Give bottles another 3-4 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy this legendary To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon over the following 3+ decades. WA 99 (10/2018): Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The O G struts a very seductive nose of opulent crème de cassis, blueberry pie, mulberries and plum preserves notions with touches of chocolate-covered cherries, aniseed, sandalwood and unsmoked cigars plus hints of menthol and smoked meats. Full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully decadent in the mouth, it completely coats the palate with black fruit preserves plus loads of spice box and savory layers, framed by firm yet velvety tannins and finishing with epic persistence. Yum! VM 96 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The O.G. is the most sensual and voluptuous of the Carter To Kalon Cabernets. A wine with no hard edges and plenty of curves, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Chocolate, espresso, plum and crème de cassis lead into a potent finish laced with the floral overtones that are typical of 337 Clone Cabernets. The O.G. is a terrific example of Mark Carter's style at its best. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 99 (5/2023): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Three Kings might end up being the star of the show in 2016 when all is said and done. I wrote "crazy good" in my raw notes, and it has a sensational nose of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, iron, and lavender. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, extravagantly textured 2016 with a great sense of freshness, ripe tannins, and a brilliant finish. WA 97+ (10/2018): The very deep purple-black colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The Three Kings features compelling black cherries, warm black berries and crème de cassis notes with nuances of plum pudding, mincemeat pie, sautéed herbs, charcuterie, tapenade and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, it fills the palate with exotic spices and black fruit preserves, framed by approachable grainy tannins and finishing very long and very spicy. VM 95 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Three Kings is dense, powerful and lush in the glass, with tremendous richness in all of its dimensions. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, spice and new leather all flesh out in this ample, broad-shouldered To Kalon Cabernet. Silky tannins and plush, resonant inky fruit add to the wine's considerable appeal. WA 95 (10/2018): Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard opens with notions of baked blackcurrants, preserved plums, blackberry compote and licorice plus touches of tar, chargrill, pan fried herbs and iron ore. Full-bodied and laden with taut, muscular fruit, it has a solid line of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. |

Helms Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$525 |

VM 98 (1/2020): A truly sensational wine, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard is just breathtaking. Fresh, vibrant and towering in its beauty, the 2016 possesses off-the-charts aromatic intensity, fruit vibrancy and total harmony. Sweet floral and spice notes add freshness to this plush, deeply resonant Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon. The move to pick just a bit earlier has paid off big-time in bringing out the purity of the red-toned fruit. The 2016 is simply magnificent. Wow. Antonio Galloni. WA 97 (9/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard was fermented 40% in barrels and 60% in oak tanks and spent 35 days on the skins. It aged for 20 months in French oak barrels and has a deep garnet-purple color. Wow—it comes charging out of the glass with beautifully bullish black cherries, crème de cassis, blackberry pie and raspberry preserves notes followed by hints of cigar box, Indian spices and licorice with a waft of dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with expressive black berry preserves, framed by soft, velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and multilayered. JD 97 (1/2020): First produced in 2005, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard screams “Cabernet Sauvignon” with its remarkable cassis, tobacco, flowery incense, lead pencil, and coffee bean aromas and flavors. It's another seamless, plush, incredibly sexy wine from this estate that has plenty of fine tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It's a magical, elegant, complex wine. JS 97 (2/2019): This a vibrant wine. Such pretty hazelnut, violet and currant aromas follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with melted tannins that are hidden with the pure fruit. Shows a super finish. Give this at least four to five years to come together. Better after 2022. |

G III Cabernet Sauvignon |
$325 |
8 |
JD 98 (1/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Fairchild G-III, which is from a well-known Beckstoffer property in Rutherford, is heavenly juice. Seeing an extended maceration and 20 months in 80% new French oak, it boasts awesome notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, crushed rocks, and violets. This all flows to a blockbuster styled beauty that has fabulous purity, fine, silky tannins, and incredible opulence paired with purity and elegance. This beauty got more than a few “wow” comments in the notes and should keep for two decades or more. |

2016 |
Sigaro Cabernet Sauvignon |
$245 |
6 |
JD 98 (1/2019): Also thrilling, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Fairchild Sigaro comes from a site north of Lake Hennessey and is 100% clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20-22 months in 80% new French oak. Black currants, crushed rocks, graphite, and lead pencil notes all flow to a powerful, tight, backward Cabernet that has incredible minerality and depth. It’s in a much more austere, focused style compared to the Fairchild G-III release, but it’s unquestionably at the same level of quality. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 2+ decades. WA 96+ (10/2018): From fruit on Pritchard Hill, aged for 20 months in 85% new 225-liter French oak barrels, the deep garnet-black colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sigaro opens with somewhat shy notes of warm blackcurrants, dried mulberries and wild blueberries with hints of plum pudding, spice box, cardamom, wood smoke, black pepper and hoisin. Full-bodied and tightly wound in the mouth, the fruit vibrates with compelling energy and a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins with just enough freshness, finishing long and minerally. 640 cases produced. VM 95 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sigaro emerges from Fairchild's estate vineyard in Conn Valley. Racy and pliant, with tremendous intensity, the 2016 is impeccable in it balance. As with all of Larry Fairchild's wines, the Sigaro is quite big, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. The Sigaro offers striking aromatic complexity and layered fruit for such a big wine, with tannins that are both prominent and yet very well polished. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 97+ (4/2019): The 2016 Syrah The Tribe is largely in the same mold with a gamy, meaty, backward profile. Smoked meats, earthy dark fruits, ground pepper, and wood smoke are all present in this medium to full-bodied, concentrated Syrah that’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years. |

Kayli Morgan Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$595 |
3 |
JD 100 (6/2020): Similarly purple-hued, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard is more backward and closed compared to the 2015, but it’s certainly loaded with potential. Giving up a rock star bouquet of cedar pencil, cassis, darker currant, white flowers, espresso, and smoke tobacco, it hits the palate with an incredibly sexy, seamless texture that carries ultra-fine tannins, remarkable purity of fruit, subtle oak, and a great, great finish. The 2015 is certainly more showy at this point, but I think the 2016 will surpass it around age 10. I certainly look forward to finding out! |

The Ark Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$595 |
3 |

JD 100 (6/2020): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard is largely cut from the same cloth and reveals a purple/ruby hue as well as a deep, profound bouquet of blue fruits, cassis, dried violets, Asian spices, vanilla-laced coffee, and a whiff of new leather. Complex, full-bodied, and magically textured, it packs loads of fruit and opulence yet stays flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, no hard edges and a majestic, singular personality. As with the 2015, drink this thrilling wine any time over the coming 30+ years. |

2016 |
Wraith Cabernet Sauvignon |
$695 |
1 |
JD 100 (6/2020): Even better, and a perfect wine from my viewpoint, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith is a blend of estate vineyards and spends 40 months in new French oak. As with all of Woodbridge’s wines, it has an incredible sense of elegance and finesse paired with beautiful richness and depth. Deep ruby/purple, with cassis and kirsch fruits as well as stunning notes of tobacco, toast, and gravelly minerality, this is Cabernet Sauvignon at its most complex, seamless, and elegant. The tannin quality is off the charts, and this magical, full-bodied, multi-dimensional effort can be enjoyed any time over the coming 30+ years or more. |

Lail Vineyards |
2016 |
J Daniel Cuvee Proprietary Blend |
$245 |
3 |
WA 100 (10/2018): One-hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 75% new French oak, the 2016 J. Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color and offers up exuberant notes of crème de cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries, violets and unsmoked cigars with touches of garrigue, fragrant earth, powdered cinnamon, black olives and tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, with a solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long and minerally. JD 98+ (1/2019): The flagship 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvee takes things up to whole other level and is a thrill a minute. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Mole Hill, Vine Hill Ranch, and Heimark vineyards that spent 20 months in 75% new oak, it sports a deep purple color as well as a spectacular bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, graphite, and spicy oak. Possessing incredible purity, full-bodied richness, building structure, and a big finish, it’s a quintessential, age-worthy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that I suspect will require more than a decade to hit prime time and will keep for 3+ decades. Bravo! VM 96 (5/2019): Saturated dark ruby. Very pure but reticent aromas of blackberry, licorice, spices and minerals, complicated by whiffs of violet and leather and a faint medicinal quality. Utterly silky, sweet and fresh on the palate, showing near-perfect balance from the outset. This wonderfully generous fruit bomb is still an infant and yet is a treat to taste today owing to its compelling sweetness and glossy texture. Hints of graphite and warm loam add interest as the wine opens in the glass. Robin Lail describes this wine as "a combination of the opulence of the 2012 and the structure of the '13," while general manager Michael Updegraff says it's "like Cabernet candy." Finishes with substantial fine-grained, horizontal tannins and outstanding breadth and length. A brilliant wine for a drought year; in fact, Lail's string of J. Daniel releases from California's five years of drought (2012 through 2016) represent a new level of excellence for this winery. Stephen Tanzer. |

Napa Valley Syrah |
$225 |
6 |
VM 96 (12/2018): The 2016 Syrah is a striking wine. Deep, pliant and super-expressive, the 2016 possesses tremendous fruit purity and exceptional balance. Today, the Syrah is quite primary, with only hints of varietal aromatics, but those should develop over time. Here, too, there is a purity and vibrancy to the fruit that is positively striking. Antonio Galloni. |

2016 |
L’Esprit des Pavots Proprietary Blend |
$105 |
2 |
JD 94 (6/2019): Leading off the Bordeaux Blends, the 2016 L'Esprit des Pavots offers impressive amounts of black fruits, tobacco, cedarwood, coffee bean, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, has a deep, layered texture, ripe tannins, and plenty of upfront, sexy fruit. It’s also incredibly complex as well as a brilliant wine. VM 92 (5/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon L'Esprit des Pavots is a dense, rich second wine that takes fruit from both Les Pavots and Au Paradis, Peter Michael's estate vineyard in Oakville. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are pushed forward in a succulent, racy wine that will drink well right out of the gate. This is the first vintage in which Les Pavots is a blend of fruit from both estate vineyards. The blend is 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Antonio Galloni. WA 90 (10/2018): The 2016 L'Esprit des Pavots is a blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it's scented of black cherries, warm blackberries and plums with nuances of spice box and cigar box plus a hint of potpourri. The palate is medium to full-bodied, soft, plush and juicy in the mouth, with loads of earthy sparks on the long, fruity finish. |

Moonracer Proprietary Blend |
$299 |

JD 96 (1/2019): The third vintage from this estate vineyard in Stag’s Leap, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Moonracer is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot (which is close to the breakdown of the vineyard). It offers a beautiful bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, graphite, and crushed rocks. While it doesn’t have the density of the To Kolan and Dr. Crane releases, it is seamless, full-bodied, incredibly complex, and multi-dimensional. Already impossible to resist, drink this pure, elegant beauty any time over the coming 20-25 years. |

Artalade Cabernet Sauvignon |
$175 |
1 |
JD 95+ (1/2019): From a vineyard on Pritchard Hill and all Cabernet that saw the standard barrel fermentation and 23 months in 70% new barrels, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade also has a chalky minerality as well as a more structured, concentrated style. Deep purple-colored, with plenty of black cherry and graphite aromas, full body, and silky tannins, it’s another terrific wine from Hoefliger, but this one is going to require some patience. Hide bottle for 4-5 years, and it should drink beautifully over the following two decades or so. WA 95 (2/2019): Coming from Pritchard Hill and composed of 100% Cabernet, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade Vineyard comes charging forth with wonderfully expressive crème de cassis, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake scents plus hints of bay leaves, cloves, underbrush and allspice. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy frame and oodles of freshness supporting the elegant layers, finishing long and spicy. VM 93+ (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artalade emerges from one of the best-known sites on Pritchard Hill. Powerful and savory in the glass, the Artalade has a lot to offer, but it also needs time to shed some of its tannin. At this stage, the 2016 is pretty forbidding, its considerable allure notwithstanding. Antonio Galloni. |

2016 |
Denali Cabernet Sauvignon |
$175 |
1 |
JD 97 (1/2019): Lastly, and I think the star of the show, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali comes from a vineyard in St. Helena and, like all the wines here, was fermented all in barrel then aged just under two years in 70% new French oak. This brilliant wine offers loads of crème de cassis, graphite, scorched earth, and hints of chocolate as well as a seamless, ultra-fine, layered style on the palate that keeps you coming back to the glass. With fabulous balance, full-bodied richness and depth, this beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon is going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two decades. It’s just another terrific wine from a great vintage and a great winemaker. WA 95 (2/2019): Made from 100% Cabernet, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali Vineyard sings of black cherries, warm plums, blackcurrant cordial and mocha with hints of charcuterie, tapenade and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it has a lovely earthy/mineral character coming forward in the mouth, with refined, firm, fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and mineral laced. VM 92 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Denali is powerful, dense and explosive. A wine of real impact, the Denali is not exactly subtle. That much is obvious. Even so, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Grilled herb, leather, smoke, tobacco and licorice are nicely layered into a Cabernet built on size and structure. I would give the 2016 a few years in bottle to fully come together. Antonio Galloni. |

2016 |
Sacrashe Cabernet Sauvignon |
$175 |
1 |
VM 96 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe Vineyard is ample, full-bodied and explosive. There is a sense of dramatic intensity to the Sacrashe that is just striking. Intense aromatics, along with black cherry, leather, spice and licorice all take shape in the glass, and yet it is the wine's overall balance that leaves the strongest impression. The tannins typical of this site are present, but they are nicely softened. This is a gorgeous wine from The Debate. Perched atop Rutherford and overlooking Lake Hennessey, Sacrashe is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley. Antonio Galloni. JD 95 (1/2019): Moving to the Cabernet Sauvignon releases, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe comes from hillside parcels in Rutherford and was barrel fermented and aged 23 months in 70% new French oak. It has a terrific sense of chalky minerality as well as loads of chocolaty black cherry and blackberry fruits, full-bodied richness and depth, ripe tannins, and more floral and spice characteristics with time in the glass. There are 100 cases of this wine, which has both richness and elegance and should keep for upwards of two decades. WA 95+ (2/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sacrashe Vineyard (100% Cabernet) is deep garnet-purple colored and comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black berries, warm cassis, black cherries and mulberries scents with hints of eucalyptus, wild sage and spice box plus a waft of cedar. Medium to full-bodied, it has beautiful harmony with lovely soft, fine-grained tannins and background freshness complementing the bold black fruit flavors, finishing with an herbal lift. |

2016 |
Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon |
$195 |
3 |
JD 99+ (1/2019): In the same mold as the 2015, yet with even more minerality and purity, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is an incredible mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. With a deep, saturated purple color, insane aromatics of scorched earth, high-class cigar tobacco, dark chocolate, and gravelly minerality, and fabulous depth and concentration on the palate, it’s thrilling wine that’s marginally approachable today, yet short-term cellaring will do it wonders and it will still be singing in 30+ years. It’s a true “wow” wine in every sense. WA 97+ (10/2018): Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up fantastically profound notes of baked plums, blackcurrant cordial and blackberry pie with hints of tilled soil, licorice, black truffles, camphor and coffee beans. The palate is very big, concentrated and decadent with loads of spices and earth layers, framed by plush tannins, finishing long with some minerals. VM 96+ (1/2020): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe and plummy, with gorgeous inky fruit that conveys a real sense of primary intensity. Dark berries, blueberry jam, mocha, crème de cassis, lavender and mint develop with time in the glass. Unctuous and racy, the 2016 is still a very young wine. The French oak needs time to integrate, but there is so much to look forward to here. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 98 (10/2018): Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Ridge features compelling Black Forest cake, warm plums, Christmas pudding and mocha notes with hints of blackberry preserves, star anise, incense and sautéed herbs plus a waft of underbrush. The palate is full, rich, velvety and fresh, with plenty of richness and layers of earth flavors, finishing long and minerally. Liquid decadence. VM 96+ (1/2020): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Ridge is laced with sweet floral notes, raspberry jam, white pepper, mint and savory herbs. Aromatic and lifted, the Heritage Ridge shows a more floral and red-toned character than the Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a very distinctive and different side of this Diamond Mountain property. Antonio Galloni. JD 96+ (1/2019): From a different side of the property that consists of deeper, more loamy soils as well as very old vines, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Ridge reveals a deep purple color and textbook Cabernet notes of green tobacco, chocolate, scorched earth, and blackcurrants. It doesn’t have the ethereal, majestic quality found in the estate Cabernet, but it’s powerful and locked and loaded. It too will keep for 20-25 years. |
