VM 91 (1/2014): Scavino's 2010 Barolo is supple and open, even in this vintage. Sweet red cherries, savory herbs, tobacco and mint meld together in an approachable Barolo that will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. The 2010 is all about polish, finesse and delicacy. Sweet spices and crushed flowers meld into the expressive finish. The main vineyard sites are Rocche Mariondino, Vignolo, Altenasso, Terlo, Vignano and San Bernardo. The Scavino Barolo is a wonderful lens through which to get an early sense of the vintage. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (12/2007): The estate's 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another awesome wine. Initially linear on entry, it explodes on the palate with a compelling array of dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice, new leather, plums and baking spices. Although Bric del Fiasc is typically a wine that relies on power, the 2004 is notably refined and elegant, with sweet silky tannins that support the fruit from start to finish. Simply put, this is a remarkable wine from Enrico Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. WS 95 (6/2008): Dark in color, with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, black licorice and blueberry. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish. A bit tight, but pretty and balanced. Very long and cerebral. Best after 2012. 780 cases made. VM 94+ (12/2007): Good deep red. Superripe aromas and flavors of plum liqueur, redcurrant, mocha and chocolate. Sweet, pliant and downright plush; a hugely concentrated, dense wine that saturates every nook and cranny of the palate. Wonderfully shapely, structured wine that finishes with superb grip and length and a captivating juicy quality. A great vintage for this bottling. |

WA 96 (2/2011): Smoke, tar, freshly cut flowers, new leather and licorice are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from the 2007 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. The 2007 is an opulent, explosive Bric del Fiasc that flows with marvelous density, richness and power. The wine captures all of the best qualities of the year in a remarkably open, harmonious style that is sure to find many admirers. The balance of fruit, aromatics and structure is first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. JS 95 (5/2011): Wild dark fruits here on the nose with raspberries and blueberries. Fresh flowers like lilacs. Full bodied, with chewy tannins and loads of fruit. Very back ended, with a big finish. Give this a few years to come together. Best after 2014. VM 91+ (10/2011): Good full, deep red. Brooding, medicinal nose shows less floral lift than the Cannubi but very good ripeness. Big and rich but with a subdued sweetness today; a bit lower-toned than the Cannubi. This very backward wine will need a long time in bottle to resolve its major load of tannins. |

VM 95 (1/2014): Dark red fruit, iron, smoke, incense and orange peel are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2010 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. A deep, fleshy Barolo, the Bric del Fiasc is incredibly polished and refined, with perhaps a bit less power than previous vintages, but more in the way of finesse. At this stage, the Bric del Fiasc comes across as not fully formed. It will be interesting to see what the next year brings. JS 95 (3/2014): Fabulous aromas of black fruits and shitake mushrooms with hints of bark. Full body, with wonderful firm tannins that are polished and refined. Needs at least three or four years of bottle age. VM 94+ (12/2013): Good full red. Knockout ineffable nose combines red berries, smoke, pepper and herbs. Pure silk on entry, then rather compact and closed in the middle despite its serious density and underlying richness. Most impressive today on the savory, echoing back end, where the tannins are buffered by red fruits and smoke. This wonderfully supple, full, youthfully medicinal wine needs time in bottle to express itself. |

JS 96 (4/2019): The redcurrant-compote character really pops out here, before dried cranberries, licorice and spice box all come to the fore. Tannic and very expansive, sweeping through a whole array of red berries via linear acidity and wrapping itself up in a long finish. Drink from 2023. WA 95+ (6/2019): From the Scavino family’s home-turf vineyard, the 2015 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) delivers structure, firmness and power. This is a classic interpretation of a historic cru, and the wine offers linear, crisp lines. Fruit from this site was fermented separately for the first time to make this wine in 1978. The family had long recognized the consistently superior quality of the fruit from this location, and they saw its special potential. Enrico Scavino told me about the rush of adrenaline and pride that washed over him when he first tasted this wine with his peers Gaja and Conterno during those Golden Years of the past and saw the enthusiasm their eyes. This is the go-to Barolo if you want to taste classic Scavino. VM 95 (11/2019): The 2015 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is dark and imposing on the palate, yet not quite as forbidding as it can be. A Barolo of size and heft, the 2015 has a lot to say, but it won't be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, smoke, leather, iron, licorice, menthol and graphite notes infuse the 2015 with layers of nuance to complement its brooding, sepia-toned personality nicely. The 2015 is a beguiling Barolo, but it needs cellaring. Antonio Galloni. WS 95 (2/2020): The sweetness from ripe plum and cherry fruit offsets the broad swath of tannins. Energetic and focused, with leather, soy, iron and tobacco accents supporting the fruit. Feels balanced, but needs time for all the elements to integrate. Better than previously reviewed. Best from 2023 through 2045. 880 cases made. |

WS 93 (12/2008): Plum and fresh herbs, such as tarragon and oregano. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and a fruity, wet earth character. Rich and chewy. Lots of fruit and tannins in reserve.Best after 2010. 1,600 cases made. VM 92+ (12/2002): (most of this wine comes from the highest portion of Scavino's Bric del Fiasc holding) Deep red. Complex, deeply pitched aromas of redcurrant, mocha, smoke and earth. Very dense and sweet; more spicy but less perfumed than the Cannubi. Very lush wine, with a sweetly spicy finish. But the Cannubi comes across as livelier today. WA 91 (10/2006): The 1998 Carobric, on the other hand, captures a beautiful middle ground. It is not as ripe as either the 1997 or 2000, nor as structured as 1996, 1999 or 2001, yet it offers highly attractive nuances of super-ripe fruit, chocolate and toasted oak flavors, with a deeply brooding personality, great length and beautifully well-integrated tannins. 1998 remains one of my favorite Scavino vintages for current drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018. |

VM 96 (1/2014): Scavino's 2010 Barolo Carobric stands out for its focus and clarity. Sweet red berries, mint, crushed rocks and rose petals are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 Carobric is bright, aromatically lifted and gorgeous in its precision. Today the 2010 is an infant, but it has gorgeous intensity and length. All the elements are in the right place. This is one of the best vintages of Carobric I can recall tasting. As a reminder, Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. VM 92 (12/2013): Very reticent nose exudes a red berry and smoke perfume. Suave, round and pliant if a bit youthfully reduced and not yet demonstrating its inherent nuance. But the balance and sweetness of this Barolo, not to mention its fine tannins and lovely length, suggest it will be a charmer with four or five years of cellaring. |
