WS 98 (12/2008): A brick house of a wine, with so much structure. Strawberry and raspberry tart on the nose. Full-bodied, with big chewy tannins and a fresh fruit finish. This is incredibly youthful and needs much more bottle time.--1998 Piedmont blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2012. 1,400 cases made.
VM 93-96 (12/2000): Full ruby-red. Exhilarating perfumed nose of black cherry, black raspberry, violet and licorice; vibrant and compelling. Dense and backward, with superb power and chewy depth. Racy acids give the flavors superb clarity. Powerfully structured and destined for a long evolution in bottle. Finishes with explosively spicy dark berry flavors.
WA 93 (11/2001): The super-extracted, blockbuster 1998 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra assaults the palate with a blast of broodingly tannic, super-concentrated black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with minerals, new oak, licorice, and truffles. With a huge mid-palate as well as an astonishingly long finish, it is not yet ready to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020. |

JS 97 (5/2011): This is amazing on the nose with roses, plums, raspberries and currants. Full bodied, with beautiful balance and finesse and depth. What gorgeous fruit and texture. Best in two or three years still.
WA 96 (2/2011): The 2007 Barolo Pajana is a showstopper.
VM 94 (10/2011): Good full red. Perfumed, expressive aromas of redcurrant, cherry, flowers and graphite. Sweet and supple but youthfully imploded, showing excellent intensity to its deep red fruit flavors. Began a bit aggressively tannic but mellowed steadily with aeration. Finishes with terrific length.
WS 93 (4/2012): A tight-fisted, compact example, with cherry, menthol and spice flavors locked up by the stern structure. Stays fresh and energetic on the long finish, revealing its ultimate potential. Be patient. Best from 2015 through 2032. 680 cases made. |
